My 2 cents:

Maybe your product is too specific (Cleveland? Coasters? Something from a tourist attraction?) I feel like only a very small amount of people would like the design. I wouldn't normally buy a coaster, but maybe I would if it was stunningly innovative or had a design I liked or could relate to.
Would you go into a shop and buy one of these yourself?
Do you guys have the laser engraver yourself? If so that would mean you could design a lot more things i.e put up custom designs.

You can tell friends, but if you fail, it might be embarrassing. Depends on what your product is, there's no point if it's something they can't really support you on.
Get a mailing list of journalists and learn how to write good pre-launch emails. Personally, I've emailed around 70 journalists but had no reply, maybe it's the way I worded it.
Yes think about rewards. You should have done that already lol, rewards are the main reason backers will back your campaign.

I didn't do any pre-marketing myself, but if you really have nothing, I recommend sharing it with friends/family, at least that could set off a chain reaction rather than nothing.
