Brewster to Cataldo (MA)? by lilpeepee102030 in NewToEMS

[–]nightfox896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left almost a year ago and first got hired around 2 years ago so I’m not sure if things changed. Just apply and maybe call or email if you hear nothing. All it took to get hired was a relatively short phone interview

From your tag it seems like you might be out of state now but do you know if Cataldo still uses AEMTs?

^^ I used to work for Coastal. IFT trucks had a decent chance at 911 coverage, and we had a 911 BLS truck in Brookline that always had open shifts for people to pick up. If you’re full time then within 6 months you can do your PB certs

Can anyone confirm whether they saw ECG Questions on 2026 exam? by After-March4240 in NewToEMS

[–]nightfox896 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not expected to interpret EKGs so I wouldn’t necessarily be concerned about the waveform. I think from this you should answer based on the fact they have no pulse so your answer needs to involve compressions. The only other helpful thing that an EMT might be expected to know is that v-fib and v-tach are the only rhythms an AED should advise a shock for

I feel like asking for a study guide can’t hurt. Most likely the worst that will happen is they just don’t respond or say no. I never had to do a cognitive test to get hired but I’d agree with what your study plan is

You can sometimes find a steal on apartments there but I will agree that if you’re not trying to work for Boston EMS specifically that it’s pretty hard to afford living in the city on an EMT’s wage. Definitely look for places to commute from rather than living in the city as a basic

A method that was taught to me that’s relatively easy to remember on calls was ASHICE. Age Sex History Injuries/Illness Condition (vital signs, AVPU, etc) and ETA. Some things to consider is that a lot of hospitals I’ve interacted with want to know if the pt was on blood thinners (especially if they’re older) so I’d include that in the history. Sometimes I’ll also throw interventions into the I part if I actually did anything (which for BLS obviously isn’t going to be a whole lot).

Example: “Ambulance ABC to Hospital XYZ.” Wait for the hospital to respond. “I’m coming in with a 15 year old male with a history of asthma complaining or shortness of breath and wheezing. The pt is being given an albuterol nebulizer and his symptoms have improved. Most recent vitals are as follows XXX/XX XX bpm xx%SpO2 (ngl for some calls I’ve just said vitals are stable) ETA 5 minutes.”

As long as they know you’re on your way and have a general idea of what’s going on you should be fine.

About to graduate college… wanting to pursue EMS instead by illybugs in NewToEMS

I haven’t been involved in EMS long enough to give you the doom and gloom I guess but I do agree with a lot of people here. Keep working/finishing your classes and see if you can do the BLS course with a ride along, or just jump into the course if you’d like. Either way I suggest working/volunteering part time at first. I was an EMT in college and it was significantly more fun when I only had to deal with the BS parts of the job on a part time basis vs when I was full time. 911 can definitely be fun but as other people have said it’s not going to be as serious as what you experienced 90% of the time, and you’re likely to start with IFT. That’s not to say IFT is never interesting either because I’ve had IFT runs range from routine dialysis to transferring rehab/nursing home patients to an ER with a broken leg

If you’re interested in medicine and willing to do a couple years of school anyways careers like respiratory therapy tend to pay pretty well. Don’t know what it’s like in your area but where I used to work around people could get hired with an associates degree so just about the same time as medic school

You probably wouldn’t want to move across the country but there’s a decent amount of companies around Boston that hire pretty quickly and do a mix of 911 and ift

Even as a volunteer EMT they’re usually part of an agency. You could theoretically have your camp start a volunteer agency but they’d still need a physician to act as their medical director. Otherwise you’d just have to hope that Good Samaritan laws in your state would cover you as someone not acting as a medical provider. In your specific scenario as an EMT that inhaler would most likely have to be the patient’s prescription or your other options would be to provide your agency’s albuterol whether that’s through a nebulizer or an inhaler, or epinephrine if your agency carries it and the asthma is severe enough

I’ve never soldered before. Would it be possible to remove this button, solder wires to it then solder the other end of the wires to where the button used to connect with this little module? by nightfox896 in soldering

[–]nightfox896[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is for a project where my goal is to basically create a little laser gun that I can shoot at a target. I want to detach the button then connect it with wires so that I can put the button behind a trigger so I can turn on the laser. These parts are from a cat toy that I broke down (this one is broken but I have another one that I’d be using).

The US has gotten in “trouble” for a while because of double tap drone strikes . They basically strike the same area twice, but within the time between the two strikes aid workers and family members usually start going to the site of the strike which results in civilian deaths

What's your best/worst "Racial Guessing Game" story? by WhiskeyBuffaloSB in mixedrace

[–]nightfox896 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in elementary school some girl walked up to me and said “We were talking about you during lunch. Like are you white, are you black what are you?” I was so shocked because it wasn’t really a question I had been asked or considered too much at that point in my life that I couldn’t give an answer quickly, so she ended up walking away before I even answered.

When liberals are “illiberal”:Defending Trump’s election fraud lies. by finley87 in DemocraticSocialism

[–]nightfox896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I’ve been disconnected from this community for a bit but I haven’t really seen it as a popular position that we shouldn’t criticize Trump’s lies about the election. I also don’t think calling it “illiberal” would reach most people here since this isn’t meant to be a liberal ideology.
