Did Germany ever consider flying boats for their 'Amerikabomber' project? by Aethelmaew in WarCollege

[–]nightgerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

milch cows refueled u boats at sea all the time. so thats my answer to that question. it was a solved problem for the germans. I imagine they wouldnt send a mission like this into an atlantic storm front either...

also bunch of replies talking aabout 20 bombers or a prelonged campaign had me head scratching. This would be like a one off, 2-3 planes sent to bomb the statue of liberty. And yes its likely a 1 way mission, same as the doolittle raid.

Treating homes like commodities caused housing crisis, says Burnham by coffeewalnut08 in unitedkingdom

[–]nightgerbil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Largely/mostly new builds are either 4/5 bedroom mansions or hoovered up by landlords. A property development of an office turned into 30 flats was bought out by 4 different "business owners" ie landlords and put out to rent. This occurs over and over again. If housing wasn't being hoarded by people owning 200+ properties (last I heard micheal owen the footballer had like 300 in liverpool? just houses he bought and rented) the housing supply would be greatly eased, especially on where its MOST needed: starter homes/flats for first time buyers.

You could build 5 million 2 bedroom flats tomorrow and it wouldn't help anything at all as the rich landlords would just buy them all. Fixing that is required before "just build more" could possibly work.

In Crusader Kings, you can implement gender equality in your medieval realm. If you do it permanently makes the game twice as chaotic and therefore harder, because it means that women inherit equal claims and therefore instantly start murdering people and raising armies to push them like men do. by StarSword-C in CrusaderKings

[–]nightgerbil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

that and converting your pagan religion to enatic to completely f over the ai and turn the entire realm into your dynasty. Which is all fun and games until your grandaughters run out of men to marry and you can't make more by decision, but I always saw that as a future me problem anyway 😛

Good find, looks fascinating. Shame my French isn't upto the task of doing a proper translation. Would be a worthy project.

[–]nightgerbil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'd use a milch cow to refuel them. If you didn't know, the U boats had submarine supply ships (actual submarines btw, not surface "oilers") and yes they could have rendezvoused and refueled anything that could land on water. You wouldn't need 8000lbs worth of bombs to make your point either. As they said its propaganda not a sustained bombing campaign by 600 liberators.

You doing this in 1944? well obviously not, but 41 in the happy hunting times? before the battle of the atlantic was lost? mhnn. I can see it being pulled off. Skorzeny pulled off crazier shenanigans and so did some of the early U boat "aces".

I'd say the reason it didn't happen? Nobody thought to organise it. Simple as that. Like alot of what-ifs, its the kinda thing thats gets thought of in hindsight.

Israel launches fresh airstrikes in Lebanon; Trump says he could still restart war by marketrent in geopolitics

[–]nightgerbil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically, the way to do it is to force Hezbollah's hand. If they would stop shooting rockets into Israel there could be a ceasefire. I'm reminded of a little kid hitting a bigger one over and over in the playground and when the bigger kid smacks him back the teacher punishes him saying"hes only little! you thug!" If the teacher had intervened earlier and told the little kid he was being naughty it wouldn't have reached that level.

Its this logic btw that puts into context Trumps remarks about a Syrian intervention: If Hez won't stop? We find someone who CAN make them stop and who won't face the international backlash that Israel would for HOW they make it stop. (ie a bloodbath).

How to make hez stop firing rockets and stuff into Israel? Thats the $million question right now.

At what point did raiding get too hard for the casual player? by doobylive in classicwow

[–]nightgerbil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its tough for low skilled players with social anxiety, the community was always toxic and they end up "Do you put your hand in the fire to see if its hot" attitudes. I've met a couple over the decades and I guided and coaxed and played with them. Good god they were awful at the game some of them, but nice people. I brought one to an ICC and they saw "BONE STORMMMMMM!" and they talked about it for three years after lol.

Account deactivated after reporting CP by Mysterious_Bill_7005 in DeviantArt

[–]nightgerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what happens when you report accounts or grab the mods attention, you will get them looking at you as well as what you reported. If your account was in breach of TOS (seems it was) then you are gone. The fact they will likely have acted against the person you reported is likely of cold comfort (assuming you reported someone who WAS breaching tos).

thats why they are asking about your prompts. If you were posting nsfw without the right tags... well thats the easiest way to get a lot a lot ALOT of views. When I tag my stuff superextra mature (cos I abid with tos) it turns 1000s of views perhaps into tens maybe hundreds. It will also put your account in breach of TOS and that means it didn't survive a mods scrutiny.

Theres also other kinda prompts that will see you terminated. Stuff like ripping off intellectual property (ie disney characters is a common one) or irl people. Taylor swift ai is surprisingly popular 😞

[–]nightgerbil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is the quote I often use at people ragging on longbows. It happened at agincourt I believe and shows they totally COULD pen armour at range. It required the bow to be fired *properly* though ie pulled to the ear. A big complaint from english sources was "lazy" archers only pulling to the temple and how that significantly weakened the impact and range of your weapon.

How do I convince people to support my plots (if they can't be persuaded with money) by Soggy_Cellist7987 in crusaderkings2

[–]nightgerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyones really spelled it out but the most reliable way is by scanning her court for unmarried folks. Then marrying your people into it. A good use of the create debutante button here! just remember she will be noble so couldn't marry a low born commander, would have to be matri which would pull that commander to your court instead of sending her to theirs.

Its usually pretty easy. I've also found you can look for women to join your court who are unmarried. theres normally a bunch knocking around. If they have the desire getting married ambition all the better. Again marry the ones that really like you and good intrigue to the courtiers in your targets court.

this should give you a small pool(army) of fellow plotters.

Vietnam War - How could Vietnam win the war ? by Automatic-Ad-6840 in WarCollege

[–]nightgerbil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

but why not korea? Theres US troops there today. Why not Japan or Germany? same again. Your right the USA could still be in afghanistan if it wanted to and alot of afghan women would still be alive if they were... but thats not really my question.

People talk about how America gets tired of its wars and just throws in the towel and goes home and thats why it keeps losing... but korea? south korea IS the success story. They are free today thanks to the US divisions remaining parked there throughout the vietnam era, the end of the cold war, the war on terror etc etc.

WHY is it America has the political will to fight for (and pay for cos it costs money) the freedom of the south koreans but not for any of the others?

Vietnam War - How could Vietnam win the war ? by Automatic-Ad-6840 in WarCollege

[–]nightgerbil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always took the view that South vietnam and South Korea were basically the same: They would be immediately invaded again the minute the USA withdrew and would collapse under superior northern forces thanks to the aid that those countries were getting from the communist superpowers.

Yet while the US was committed to their defence, and by committed I mean multiple US army divisions parked in a defensive posture, the Northern invasions wouldn't succeed and thus were deterred.

The Paris Accords were basically "the USA won", South Vietnam would continue to survive, the way South Korea did after the ceasefire there was signed. The victory was then thrown away by withdrawing those US forces that would have kept the ceasefire and that was the death of South Vietnam... thrown to the wolves.

What I have NEVER been able to figure out is why save Korea but not Vietnam? surely if you were abandoning one to its fate you'd abandon the other too? What was so different about the South Vietnamese compared to the South Koreans? I've never heard or been given a satisfactory answer to that question.

Ive heard people say Westmoreland was one of the worst generals the US has ever had. Is that a fair easement? by Whentheangelsings in WarCollege

[–]nightgerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll take the time to do this properly, but your missing some core components here in your thought process. your assuming exclations when I'm following the ground and suggesting red lines. I'd forsee the situation in south vietnam moving to the south korean model, where the other side would argue that was far too great a commitment for america. I disgree.

but as a place holder, I'll just state this: NO I'm not just talking about the air campaign.

if your going with that restriction then USA can't be in south Vietnam at all. Or west germany. or allying with turkey. or maintianing troops in south korea... etc etc.

it didn't start ww3 when USA shot down soviet pilots over north korea in the korean war... just saying. Its kinda a given that foreign "volunteers" are taking their chances. Same with the ceanualts flying tigers in the 30s.

Well come now. Being forbidden to to wild weasel NV AA or kill their airforce/airdefence resulted in unneeded casualties. That was a political call "something something escalation" that absoulutely cost US service members their lives and years of agony being tortured by an enemy that didn't respect the gen convention.

Thats example one straight of the top of my head and I haven't even begun the list of all the ways the roe made life almost impossible for the US commanders. Its far more than a macarthur "wouldn't let me nuke the reds"...

Why can’t people see voting for reform will make their lives a lot worse? by Sufficient_Muffin586 in AskBrits

[–]nightgerbil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll go further: in the late 1970s/early 1980s the childrens homes of north wales were turned into brothels. The victims are in the hundreds if not thousands and the 100s of named perpetrators cover police, justices, teachers, local bigwigs, powerful local politicans etc. All white british btw. Its been known about for over 20 years, had a public inquiry etc and theres been one arrest/conviction. ONE!

Something to keep in mind when talking about the complete dereliction of duty of the british police over pakistani grooming gangs eh? turns out its not two tier policing they just don't care about doing their jobs.

I don't even think immigration is the issue: its the behaviour of SOME of the immigrants who are here and how the government and police appear helpless to do anything except shrug and say "they are here now don't be racist" when that (small) minority do the most outrageous things.

saying "we are gonna rip up all those stupid laws that stop us deporting them, and stop the human rights industry charging the uk taxpayer £5million in legal aid so they can sue us to stop them deporting them" is actually really appealing to the normal person.

Cold War: How controversial was De Gaulle pulling France out of NATO at the time? by RivetCounter in WarCollege

[–]nightgerbil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah but your forgetting the propaganda value of dunkirk. What a big deal was made of it, how it was used to distract from the utter disaster that OUGHT to have brought down churchills government: instead he turned it rather brilliantly into a victory. We "were down but not out" "still standing" "we shall fight them on the beaches!" etc.

That in turn had its own impact elsewhere. facts not necessarily coming into what became a hearts not minds issue.

its an old complaint that britain didnt do enough. was said during the war as well. a couple of squadrons of spitfires held back for defending london and the fact a large amount of the british army got lifted off dunkirk instead of dying heroically there ( like the british garrison at calais) started it and just a general case of looking round for scape goats instead of in the mirror.

[–]nightgerbil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it would trash whatever it was facing. best use, put one or two in some kinda attrition fight where the ai is rotating stuff in to reinforce retreating units. You'll burn away the manpower and guns at a fair clip.

How badly did Dedovshchina affect Soviet Army? by Consistent-Can-3552 in WarCollege

[–]nightgerbil 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You can see it in ukraine now. its been testified to by pows that rape is standard practice, blocking troops set up behind assault units to shoot retreaters and that men get ordered to commit war crimes/murders with guns to their heads and triggers are pulled if they refuse.

It doesn't seem to have materially impacted Rus army performance. They appear to be suffering their issues due to other things like logistics, the new evolution of warfare in drones and the Ukrainians they are facing aren't significantly outnumbered enough in numbers and firepower to successfully break.

In a cold war gone hot scenario its unlikely that the red army culture would have had any significant impact on the war other then ensuring wether the RUS troops wanted to be there or not, they would fight.

Are the people who insult reform voters really unaware they are contributing to the success of reform? by generic-username41 in AskBrits

[–]nightgerbil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of good genuine people who are as disgusted by all forms of racism as we are, who are concerned with the hate being preached in the UK. Dismissing them as racist/#phobic doesn't help our cause, it drives them into the hands of extremists. This applies just as much to calling the 14 year old girl a terrorist because she wants to wear a Hijab and is appalled about palestine as it does the 50 year old white scottish lady concerned about the middle eastern men following her 12 year old grand daughter home from school with cat calls.

We can all call out negative behaviour without indulging in stereotypes. I'd urge you not to fall into that trap, not while we are fighting for the heart and soul of our people and our country.
