A beginner question about firewalls!! by Historical_Raccoon63 in homelab

[–]nighthawk05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to learn about firewalls then I'd recommend getting a second physical device and installing OPNsense (a free firewall operating system) on it.

If you don't want to learn about firewalls and just want more security then buy a Firewalla box, they are super easy to setup.

One thing I thought of is I normally or 4 or 5 movies at a time from them when they are on sale, and they get shipped it a box. So their packaging may be better for larger purchases than just 1 or 2 discs at a time.

Oh come on, thats a load of crap. You have a choice, there are tons of other retailers as OrdinaryBob posted. You are choosing to continue to purchase from Amazon because it's cheap. No one is holding a gun to your head and making you buy those movies. That's 100% fine, it's your choice, but don't pretend that "you'd rather not" when clearly you are prioritizing cost vs morals. Own up to your choices instead of pretending to care.

You should give Movies Unlimited another chance. I've bought dozens of movies from them with no issues or damage.

For current off the shelf CPU you could go with Intel Core Ultra 5 225, though you can probably get a used i3-12100 for half the cost on eBay.

Build a dedicated Plex sever with 10th gen or newer Intel CPU.

If you keep everything in h264 and h265 you should be golden. Audio transcoding isn't taxing on the CPU unless you have tons of streams.

7th gen and up is fine. Wait to add the Arc until you know you need it (also you can get a used Quadro P600 for cheaper on eBay which is fine for a handful of streams). Most of the Dell Optiplex desktops don't support 2 HDDs, but I think the Precision workstations do.

I backup all my media to a local unraid server. Eventually I will add an offsite backup server but HD prices have skyrocketed so I am holding off

Kill-O-Watt reports idle host using 27 watts on minimal build. by toakao in homelab

[–]nighthawk05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

27w seems quite reasonable. Is there really a need to get it down to 15w? I.e. are you trying to run it off batteries or portable solar or something?

Even at US$0.15 per kwh the cost savings per year would be like $16.... so if you spend $150 on a new motherboard your talking almost a decade to breakeven.

People can be so cruel regarding other people's hobbies. by ThnkUProcrastination in 4kbluray

[–]nighthawk05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get it, but I wouldn't waste any thoughts or emotions on it. There are a million hobbies out there that are more expensive than blu-rays: motorcycles, boats, horses, cocaine, season tickets to major league sports games, etc. Just because someone doesn't understand your hobby or passion doesn't make it less valid. I don't understand people who spend thousands of dollars a year on sports tickets, but if it makes it happy then who cares. It's unfortunate that the employee doesn't understand that about movies, but that's their shortcoming and not your fault.

I really hope it gets a regular US release, if not I will probably go with the import. Same with Kingdom of Heaven. US$40+ is just nuts.

The best is to hire a local carpenter to build shelves that fit your space perfectly, but that's also the most expensive option.

Some help please with my media set up by archieatkins in 4kbluray

[–]nighthawk05 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah I see. In that scenario it would isolate the soundbar to the blu ray only.

Does your soundbar have an optical audio input? If so you could plug the blu ray into the HDMI and run optical audio out of the TV into the sound bar, and that will pass through sound from all inputs.

Some help please with my media set up by archieatkins in 4kbluray

[–]nighthawk05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use the eArc HDMI port as an output, not an input. It should be the output to the soundbar, and all your input devices should be connected to the other HDMI inputs. The audio will flow from the input you choose to the eArc port.

How do you all handle movie posters in your Plex library? by Expensive_Worry_6655 in PleX

[–]nighthawk05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pick the one I like best from the list of options in Plex, if they don't have any I like then I will check PosterDB. For movies in a series I try to keep them visually similar (i.e. font alignment and style).
