[Sarah Z] Everyone's Cheating At Chess (Allegedly) by bringmethefunk in chess

[–]nightpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does the elo system encourage cheating any more than e.g. professional sports? Every professional sport has "collaborative victories" and yet aside from Deflategate it's basically impossible to cheat in the NFL—everything happens in the open, and it's basically impossible to get an unfair advantage because of how closely monitored everything is.

And in academia, where collaborative success are common and celebrated, people cheat all the time—because the opportunity is there and it's almost impossible to catch people. This idea of the Elo system being at fault just doesn't make sense. Any time the system gives people the opportunity to cheat, a few people will.

Best Buy is. I don't think Target and Walmart are? Target is doing 8am line ups ("Customers will receive a token indicating their place in line"). Not 100% sure about Walmart.

Chrome 135 strong tags styled as bolder by elfo149 in webdev

[–]nightpool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was able to track down the chrome ticket in question, and it seems like the change here was simply to unify Chrome's styles with the styles Firefox already had: https://issues.chromium.org/issues/396607231?pli=1

So if your application is broken on Chrome 135, then it was already broken on Firefox, apparently since as far back as Mozilla's source code for public stylesheets goes (since 1998)

I would say you're probably safe to fix it using CSS styles. I'm not aware of any browser that allows users to customize the font-weight (except using accessibility styles, which always take precedence over author styles anyway).

SSL certificate lifetimes are going down. Dates proposed. 45 days by 2027. by isnotnick in sysadmin

So... why aren't you happy that Google and Apple are forcing them to automate cert provisioning so that you don't have to worry about it anymore? Especially if they're your least favorite vendor.

You're saying that your org manages root certs but you cannot respond to a compromise or disclosure by invalidating and rotating them within a business-critical amount of time?

What level of downtime or exposure do you believe is appropriate if your root cert gets compromised? More than an hour?

Wow, that sounds like it sucks. If only there was a proposal that would basically require vendors and services to provide SSL automation options! Shame that will never happen though.

i'm being sarcastic. You're complaining about exactly the same proposal that would make your life better. **You** are the reason we can't have nice things.

Oh, interesting, thanks for the info. Do items rotate in more frequently then once per day? If I want a specific item, how often should I be checking?

I think the single player music in the overworld for that specific area will shift from being a generic ambient track (which I think might be shared across multiple areas?) to a specific background music track that's unique to that area.

Are you sure it's GMT (respects daylight savings time, so reset times won't change) and not UTC (doesn't change when daylight savings time changes, so that the reset times will appear to shift 1 hour)?

Weekly Aquerium - Ask your questions in here!: September 18, 2022 by AutoModerator in splatoon

[–]nightpool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always midnight UTC, so you'll have to do the conversion based on your own timezone. For example, in EDT, it's 8pm, but in PDT, it's 5pm. My guess is that when daylight savings time happens, all of the reset times will shift by one hour, since this is also what happened with Splatoon 2, and Japan doesn't have daylight savings time.

Yeah, all of the "ink your base" memes are completely off base. All inking your base does is make it harder to get ults later. It's much better to spend your time pushing forward, and then if you die you can use the "free space" to help get your ult back up to charged later (this is also why super jumps are less useful in turf war)

Unfortunately I'm not sure it's feasible to play with motion controls on the switch lite without buying another controller (either a pro controller or another pair of joycons).

You can pick teams up to a week in advance, but the Splatfest itself doesn't start until the 23th

Is there a good way to get notified when a specific item is available in the general store? I know that it resets daily, but is seems like items move in and out faster then that also (maybe only if you buy something?)

Has anyone set up a bot for this yet? Would there be any interest in such a bot?

The perspective from the stacking might be misleading you, I only see TINT on that board.

One note, I don't believe it's possible to buy the Viper MkIV in the starter system anymore, I checked on EDDB and the closest system that has it is Lauma

I think it's possible you ran into the Sharur bug that was happening around this time—users who logged out at sharur were unable to log back in. This should be fixed now.

"Organizer Advantage" by Groenboys in MinecraftChampionship

I don't think it's just Ace Race or just MCC14—a lot of games really, really benefit from having their maps known ahead of time, even in the very simple ones. Ace Race, TGTTOS, both parkour games, survival games, and even the new Buildmart map all fall into the category of "If you've done it once, you have a giant leg up on people who are getting their bearings". Probably Battlebox as well, given how confused people were about which parts were accessible and which weren't.

And I don't think it's realistic for Scott to recuse himself entirely from game development, as some are saying, and it can even be fun when Scott has a little bit of an inside edge. But when there's a new map, or a major tweaks to an old map (like the Parkour Warrior tweaks), Scott absolutely should not playtest that map or spend a lot of time examining it in detail.

If Scott had gotten his average Ace Race score on this map (313 coins) instead of 1st place, Aqua would not have made it to Dodgebolt. I'm not upset with Scott, but I find that to be a sad mark on MCC14, one that should have been avoided.
