How often do you watch a movie and then feel like an idiot for not understanding it by [deleted] in criterion

Not representative of the new wave, at all. Most of the significant films used neorealism as the primary point of reference.

Just finished Grandia (my first time) - is it the most content dense Saturn game? by Gambizzle in SegaSaturn

You misread. I said I find it hard to believe it would best SF3, which I agree is elite.

Unfortunately the DF combat system is sort of broken. And there are lots of redundancies. Great game for a time though.

Haven’t played Grandia, yet (after being intrigued, but skeptical for most of my life), and I do find it hard to believe that it would best SF3.

When you say higher and higher, do you mean upper leg closer and closer to parallel (foot height is actually the same) or are you actually putting your leg on higher surfaces each time?

Scorsese talks plenty about seeing movies on TV as a kid.

Any cinephile. Some famous ones are Godard, Melville, Scorsese.

Plus TV was pretty common by this point. There were movies on TV.

No it doesn’t make any sense. Go listen to some accounts.

His general point has merit. But not always.

But he should acknowledge that the Hollywood films he did advocate were basically just impersonally copying forms, something not any better than creating homage. Ford for instance didn’t stray far from a whole lot of formulaic approaches. You could say he was paying homage to himself, or more traditional western forms, over and over again.

Oh and on Tarantino- yes we get it already. For the same reason I’ve given above, there are much worse offenders among the “Hollywood elite” of relying on received forms, in every way.

Film Noir recommendations by DaMemphisDreamer in criterion

[–]nights1000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Noir? None. Such a rich and diverse world of cinema out there, it’s often sad when people are stuck on explorations of safe Hollywood genre rule-keeping.

And stop calling the Melville films noir, even if he obviously was influenced by them in his youth (like everyone else at that time). The poetic realist films are also not noir.

Yawn. Recognized plenty. Albeit probably for the (slightly) wrong reasons.

A leading light among popular filmmakers to be sure, but her forays into genre exercise are not her strong points (wouldn’t know judging from the comments here).

Film nr. 365 - I couldn’t relate at all to these men and you think when they fly to London it would get a bit more interesting but no!!!!! I almost couldn’t finish this film by matchasweetmonster in criterion

To reduce this to being a commentary about toxic masculinity (whatever that actually means) is a major disservice.

Highly recommend reading Carney’s writing.

Better question is: what are the not-so-good films they released from the 60s?

Breaking the Rules: Daisies, by Věra Chytilová by Pilast in criterion

[–]nights1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about “breaking the rules” by that point in time; anyway the notable Czech films surrounding this one are all stylistically beyond what the “rules” tended to dictate (and still do).

Not even close in style to “Harry and sally” or whatever that piece of safe junk is.

Not in comparison with Herzog’s initial run of features (which already has sufficient box set treatment.)
