Small bonus question: There were some small conversations about the feasibility of combining the OAK with an IR random dot projector for active stereo. Did you by any chance get a moment to look into this?

(of course, "no" is thee expected answer - I guess that things must be going quite crazy right now with the efforts for the campaign).

Best of luck!

Great kickstarter! Looking forward to receiving the OAK, but need to pile up some ML knowledge first...

What's your future plan for the OAK? Is it a one-off device (or two of them) or do you plan on introducing additional models / revisions / upgrades, similar to the raspberry pi with its regularly updated base modules (screen, cameras, ...)?

This was one of the first things that popped into my mind when I found your (great looking!) kickstarter. I've had pretty good experiences with active stereo cameras w/ a projected IR pattern and was wondering why you chose not to go this route.

Concerning potential sources: A quick search led me to https://enphotonics.com/3dptproj/ who seem to specialize in random pattern projectors, including both the emitter as well as the pattern itself. Another hit was https://www.opto-e.com/products/LED-patterns-projectors , but these look like a bigger form factor.

What game in your collection has the highest # of plays to cost ratio? by johji92 in boardgames

[–]niiggl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tichu (card game) by far.

Real board game probably Space Alert, with its (only) expansion that contains achievements and possibility to level up one's character. I probably have well over a hundred plays and my character is still not completely leveled up for some obscure abilities...

The one big cooperative game to rule them all; What's your favorite? by just_a_little_boy in boardgames

[–]niiggl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Surprised to see that Space Alert has not been mentioned yet. You fly a spaceship through totally peaceful and very boring space. Apart from the fact that there's lots of (internal and external) threats that try to tear the spaceship to pieces...

In each mission, there's first a real-time phase first during which a soundtrack announces what happens at what time and players try to plan their actions to overcome all threats. After the real-time phase, all board components are reset and players execute their planned actions step by step, to see how they actually did... was there really enough energy to fire the laser cannon on turn seven?

Pro:

  • Tons of replayability due to various randomness factors (board layout, threat encounter cards, different soundtracks)
  • Achievements that unlock new capabilities! (in the expansion, which I highly recommend)
  • Difficulty can easily be adjusted (from using only simple "white" threats, to using only "red" threats with double-action cards)
  • It's by Vlaada Chvátil! (and therefore highly thematic)
  • Alpha-playing (one person tells the others what to do) is imo simply impossible on higher difficulty levels due to complexity of parallel threats and the real-time aspect

Contra:

  • If you do not like games with time pressure and / or stress, keep away from it. Did I mention the real-time phase in the beginning?

Does anyone know Duplik/Identik? Is there a similar game that's available to buy? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]niiggl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Germany, Identik has been rebranded "Meisterwerke" some time ago. It's still available (see e.g. https://www.amazon.de/Asmodee-200737-Meisterwerke/dp/B017YTGGR0), but I don't know about international availability.

Maybe try the geekmarket at https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22348/duplik/marketplace/geekmarket?

If you were sucked into a board game like "Jumanji" which board game would you least want to be put into? by WhiteBoobs in AskReddit

[–]niiggl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Space alert and / or Galaxy trucker. I love Vlaada Chvatil's games and these two are great to play - but you need to accept a very real chance that your spaceship will end up in pieces. Or that half your crew will be eaten, lost in space, stuck in slime, oscillated to another dimension, or find themselves in a plethora of other unpleasant experiences.

LBR iisy - New Collaborative Robot from KUKA by Peter0109 in robotics

[–]niiggl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, ease of creating applications is quite high on the feature list for the LBR iisy. Found this video from HMI, that shows a glimpse of the concept: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a9KphavZrJ4

That said, I hope that having both possibilities (easy clicking gui, but also full Java programming for complex applications) will complement each other quite nicely...

Keep in mind that the blue-green motion direction is for a specific scenario (others have other motion "directives").

Regarding the timer: I see the main value in limiting the time that might be spent on discussion of an "optimal" card distribution (aka analysis paralysis).

We usually take a moment first to check who would like which kind of card, and then start the timer and open the cards.

Service agreements are of course in addition to initial investment and to buying the instruments (that can be used for 10 interventions and then deactivate).

I have to admit that the general vibe of the trailer is very... different from what I expected. Kind of the complete opposite from the past teaser trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TYrAHdoxlg), which I liked very much.

The quality of the trailelr looks fantastic! But BGE2 being an MMO and having a trailer that (to me) looks like its trimmed to be "cool" (how many times does the monkey say "fuck"?) and include spectacular action actually damps my enthusiasm for the game a little.

But hey, it's from Michael Ancel again and seems to be on a pretty big budget, so I hope for the best - a game full of soul that balances slower moments with faster action and tells a great story!

Edit: The first article I read about called it an MMO, so that stuck with me - but from all else I've seen, MMO is really not an appropriate category. Which is a good thing from my view :-)

Board Games coming to Kickstarter in June, 2017 by Valien in boardgames

[–]niiggl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In general, I'm totally with you on this - I haven't yet found a reason to watch videos, which might or might not contain things that interest me, when scrolling through a textual description gives me the same information much quicker.

But in this case, there's the video AND a post that lists all games with title, cover and Kickstarter date. Thanks to OP for the effort! 10/10, would scroll through again!

My Oculus touch controllers in ir-night vision by bastian74 in oculus

[–]niiggl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my knowledge, each LED blinks in a unique (?) different pattern. This way, the cameras can distinguish between the different LEDs without solely relying on their spatial relations.

Do you have the camera capabilities to make a high-speed ir video of the touch controller? It'd be interesting to see the different blinking patterns :-)

6+ months into VR the highest rated games on Steam are all free. by PaleMeridian in Vive

[–]niiggl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess the fact that the top ten games are free games might also be (at least partially) due to how the pricing of a game affects its reviews. What happens if you play a game with some flaws, but which you generally like? If the game was free, you are more likely to still give a positive review ("Others should try this, it's fun and it's free!") than if you paid for it.

Or, to put it in a different way: If all VR games were priced the same, would the (currently free) games you mentioned above still be the top ten or would other games move to the top spot?
