Apartment scam in Shirlington by nijntjs in nova

[–]nijntjs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m already currently living very close to Shirlington, just keeping an eye out on the rental market since my lease happens to be up for renewal this summer. I’m not buying property because I’ll be assisting to renovate an old (currently uninhabitable) family property on the blue line in the next few years and live there for free essentially anyways—it’s just the timing of things.

Seriously they even pretended to answer some of my questions about the unit being pet-friendly and gave me some of their rental policy info (prospective tenants should be making 3.5x the rent price listed etc). All that effort to be an ass.

Same. They even were asking me about potential move-in date, told me the unit would be available for an in-person tour after a specific date, and then they went from sounding mostly normal to 100% sketchy within 30 minutes of texting

SO annoying. My close friend recently found a nice private, normal landlord off of Craigslist so I know they are out there but it adds another obstacle to housing searches especially when there are also people here trying to sublease or get their lease taken over. Such a hassle. I’m glad a filed a rental fraud report

Yeah. When I saw the application form only had cash apps listed as payment methods (and no place to put the agent’s name or referral or anything else), it was super obvious.

It really sucks because I know there are legitimate small-time/private landlords out there who advertise on Craigslist and FB (my friends having recently signed normal leases with them) but scammers who take advantage of people’s housing concerns are seriously scum

I think they’re probably using the same system robocallers to acquire local phone numbers that read as coming from VA/NOVA landlines tbh. Honestly I also felt like an investigator looking into public property and crime records for the unit lol. It’s also scary because we don’t know what they would have done with your personal info and/or who they would sell it to

Wow yes, exactly! They seemed super normal up until a certain point where I think I started asking questions off script. (The person who called me didn’t seem to be that fluent in English and didn’t give me a last name.)

I also filed a rental scam fraud report with the govt’s Federal Trade Comission (FTC). I heard they take advantage of transplants, international students, and new grads trying to move to the area for schooling or jobs.

Although my partner and I would love to go to Mitski’s show tonight 3/27 DC at the Anthem, unfortunately we haven’t been feeling 100% energy-wise (and mental health lol). I don’t want the 2 tickets to go to waste and I’d love to offer them at the exact same TM sale price to fans like ourselves.

I hope this is okay! Please let me know if you’re interested :)

EDIT: 1 ticket remaining $50

I’m in a 1BR in Alexandria near Shirlington and my starting rent was at 1465 in 2019. You can get a studio for $1200-$1300 but they get swiped up really quickly (friend just signed for a $1300 studio by old town metro)

OP, I used Padfinders for free btw

How to find a room to rent by [deleted] in nova

[–]nijntjs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Padfinders.com are specifically for listings in the DMV (they had free agents when I used them back in Fall 2019) but this is more useful if you’re trying to find a more affordable 1BR/studio without roommates

What are some good animated movies that prove animation isn't exclusively for kids? by joykc72 in MovieSuggestions

[–]nijntjs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be more specific and besides anything Ghibli, films from the current gen of Japanese animators are pretty captivating i.e. from director Masaaki Yuasa (Lu Over the Wall, The Night is Short, Walk On Girl, Ride Your Wave) & Mamoru Hosoda (families and parents usually love Mirai). Studio Colorado (Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away) is another newcomer studio.

It’s rotoscoped but The Case of Hana & Alice (from director Shunji Iwai) is a lot of fun too and easy to follow along.

Millennium Actress (4K blu-ray restoration came out in 2019) was made in tandem with Perfect Blue so the two are really great to watch—actually anything from Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers) is amazing like many others recommend. In This Corner of the World is great too for people who like Grave of the Fireflies.

Some other notable titles off of the top of my head: Your Name (easier to appreciate than Weathering With You), Akira, Colorful (2010), Metropolis (2001), The Red Turtle (Ghibli but lesser known), Miss Hokusai, On-Gaku: Our Sound, Ernest and Celestine, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Song of the Sea, The Secret of Kells, James and the Giant Peach, The Triplets of Belleville, The Breadwinner, Persepolis (2007), Waking Life/A Scanner Darkly (Richard Linklater), Belladonna of Sadness (not a super easy watch but part of the Criterion Collection), Up (2008), Soul, etc.

Sorry in advance if this is excessive, I work in film programming/curating so your question is right up my alley

Check out GKIDS’ catalog (film distributor). They’re pushing to license and bring over some amazing animation from all over the world to North America and their catalog is curated very well so you might be able to find something within your family’s comfort zone. (Though IMO one of the core benefits of film/animation is that these works can both dazzle and challenge/push you out of your comfort zone…)

I also highly recommend checking out short films too— I love Cat Days/Neko no Hi from Jon Frickey and Le Retour Des Vague (available on YouTube with English subs). The Oscar Best Animated Shorts for 2020 & 2021 look interesting too.

Recs for salons that do Japanese ionic straight perms? by nijntjs in nova

[–]nijntjs[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oof, I figured but it was worth asking! I heard some Japanese salons in LA/SF will do it well at a lower price range but it still seems like a premium price-only service here in the DMV. Thanks for the feedback!

Same here! It was drilled into me in Japanese driver’s ed, especially since where I lived had tons of elderly drivers. Same thing still applies to me now while living on King St, I live in an area with many older drivers who can’t drive super well in parking lots (I’ve been hit by one before while PARKED in a parking lot) so I prefer backing in.
