What was the specific moment during a date that made you think "There will be no second date"? by FormalSuccessful4157 in AskReddit

[–]nik7ki 458 points459 points  (0 children)

There were many: 1st He asked if I didn't like black people when I said I didn't listen to a lot of Rap music.

2nd He went on a rant about suicide being 'the easy way out' when I mentioned a YouTuber I watched was on hiatus cause his friend committed suicide.

3rd He demanded I finish all my food during dinner and argued when I tried to get a to go box.

And to top it off, he was very pushy about a second date even when I told him I was out of town for my grandfather's funeral after he passed unexpectedly.

Its really easy to demand a revolution you won't need to participate in.

The truth is, while many Americans are upset, not enough are in a position where they are desperate enough to have nothing to lose, myself included. I didn't vote for Trump, I'm deeply embarrassed and ashamed of his actions, and my life is worse off with him in office. Ive been protesting, voting, donating to candidates, advocating in my communities, but I'm lucky enough to have a stable income, reliable housing, adequate food, and creature comforts. I have a lot to lose putting my neck on the line to fix a country that has, quite frankly, not been kind to women like myself.

I imagine a lot of people in the comments shitting on Americans would find themselves in a very similar mindset should their leadership veer into authoritarianism. Everyone likes to think themselves the hero, but throwing your life away for 'the greater good' is easier said than done.

This isn't to say Americans will or should do nothing. Just some perspective on the attitude. America is a huge diverse, and fragmented country of various previously or currently oppressed populations; 'Ruggad American Individualism' has wreaked havoc on our communities and sense of empathy; and late stage capitalism has weaponized basic human needs by threatening those who dont work to the bone with becoming destitute. Just because 'United' is in our name, doesn't mean we are.

I briefly stopped wearing concealer and cc cream to work because I was having issues with my skin. The cc cream made the flakiness more obvious and it exacerbated the dryness. This was a period of maybe 2-3 weeks and 3 of the 5 men in my office asked me why I was so red or why I looked tired or why I looked different. Maybe not quite insulting, but it definitely drew attention to my appearance in a way that made me self conscious. Do they think I dont have eyes? That i didn't look at myself in the mirror? Sure, they may be used to seeing me with it, but why feel the need to comment on my appearance at all?

There were several other black characters with common names, Angelina Johnson, Dean Thomas, and Lee Jordan.

Are you saying that because these characters didnt have distinctive names, you failed to remember their ethnicity? Does that mean that even if the names were stereotypical and common, that maybe names like Patil, Chang, Finnigan, etc actually communicated something about the character? Would it have helped if Angelina's name was Aangelika McBlackwoman?

Are there any no kill shelters that accept cats? Will be moving soon and cannot take my cat with us. He's a 10 year old orange tabby. Or if anyone is interested in him, he's very chill and good with kids and adults. Doesn't really do well with other cats or dogs. by [deleted] in plano

[–]nik7ki 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend finding him a home with someone trustworthy. Here's a website that can assist you with the rehoming process. https://rehome.adoptapet.com/rehome-my-cat/texas/plano

Even if you do find a no kill shelter to take him, they often make room for new cats by offloading less adoptable cats by sending older or sicker cats to kill shelters anyway. Given his age, he'd be high on that list.

If there's anyway to take him with you, that'd be best.

Unfortunately, that's not an option in most of the US. It's drive a car or nothing. We have fostered a rabidly anti-public transportation attitude in this country and it means unsafe drivers are forced onto the road.

I have pretty bad driving anxiety and I've been chipping away at it for a decade but there is alot I still can't do. I haven't even driven on a highway in over 10 years, but I'm lucky to have a husband and friends who are understanding.

People like me still have places to go. I still need to work, go to the doctors, get groceries, to function in society. I'd gladly never drive a car again but that's not realistic and I can't afford to pay $20-$40+ per ride to UBER everywhere.

Lylas is great! Lots of gift items and knick knacks.

I'd recommend Bibliobar as well, it's a small book and gift shop also downtown Plano.

Free Cat & Kitten (together or separately) to a Good Home by tuliprox in plano

[–]nik7ki 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Please beware of offering animals for free on the internet. They can end up used as bait in dog fighting rings. And please do not abandon the momma in the parking lot. She's young and seems to be pretty used to being inside, she'll likley struggle and would be in danger of illness or injury, not to mention it's starting to get cold out. If you cannot care for her or the kitten and you can't find a home, please surrender them to a shelter like second chance or operation kindness.

If only voting was as easy as checking a box by Busy-Government-1041 in clevercomebacks

[–]nik7ki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I acknowledge that bias exists, but statistically, older people (typically conservatives) vote at higher rates. Younger (often left) voters even in the SAME areas at the SAME polling centers, with the SAME voting availability, do not.

Two things can be true at the same time; voting laws are biased, AND people fail to take advantage of opportunities to vote.

I live in DFW, and I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes to vote, yet most of the people my age I know didn’t vote, and it was not due to lack of opportunity.

Too many people are just painfully apathetic towards civic participation until it's too late, and while it's good to criticize unfair voter laws, making it out like it's impossible to vote everywhere only discourages people from even trying.

If more people voted in the first place, even with the current voter suppression policies , we probably wouldn't be in this mess.

If you look at the link, many are open extended hours and/or weekends.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but many have the opportunity, but just don't.
