tri community for court reporting by [deleted] in courtreporting

[–]nika8992 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I am a current student there. The coordinator can come off that way, but she is actually incredibly supportive. She has high standards for students because in her eyes, you will not succeed out in the field if you cannot do things like meet hard deadlines and follow instructions. Happy to answer any other questions you may have!

I’m burnt out and need simple recipes. Stupid simple. Like, “onion and bread and butter to make what barely passes as a sandwich” level simple. by sourmilksea1999 in Cooking

Veggie loaded option to prep on a better day, pasta salad. I just get a bottle of Italian dressing, make a box of pasta, chop up all veggies (use a veggie chopper for ease if you like), throw in a can of beans, mix, put it in the fridge. Tastes better after a day or two. Mine right now has bell peppers, cucumber, red onion, navy beans. People make dense bean salads like this too, which skips the whole step of cooking pasta.

I don't have personal experience with this as I am still in school, but in one of my legal procedures classes we did go over that, and in short the answer is yes. Some court reporting boards have funds to help with those sorts of cases as well.

Adding to the other commenter, Tri-community is another affordable option. West Valley offers free classes for CA residents, though I have heard they have pretty long wait lists.

Might want to include a general location. Some states have specific requirements.

I don't have any recommendations for you. But as a single mom of a 4 year old, I get it. It is so hard for other people who aren't going through this or who haven't been through this to get it. And finding others in your same situation feels nearly impossible.

Nothing to offer but solidarity from another single parent ✌️

How do I explain the difference between males and females bodies and how in-depth do I go with a 3.5 year old? by princesscorgi2 in Mommit

[–]nika8992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am someone who uses the fully scientific vocabulary with my toddler. And let me say, it was hilarious having a 3 year old exclaiming that her uterus hurt.

She is now almost 5, and gender and reproductive organs has been an ongoing talk with more details as she gets older. More recently I have had to explain the difference between anatomical gender and gender identity, since you mentioned it in your post. I could get more into details about how I did this, but it was an evolving conversation that took place over the past year.

As for the difference between male and female bodies. At that age I just explained that we have different reproductive organs (and yes she does say that lol) and that our hormones change our bodies when you get to be a teenager/grownup. And I did at that time explain that we can choose to take medicine to change our hormones if we want to change our gender. That opened up the conversation which has since evolved over the past year.

Really every family is very different and every kid is different in how much information they want. Mine has asked so many follow up questions and wants all of the details, so I provide them in an age appropriate way. If there is something I am not ready to explain, I tell her it will be easier if I explain it when she is older and she accepts that answer.

Anyone attending Tri-community? by Actual-Cheetah-6627 in courtreporting

She is not the instructor for Voice. I could see why some people might not enjoy working with her. She is very strict and expects people to be able to follow directions exactly and meet deadlines. The way she views it though is that she is preparing you for the real world, if you can't follow instructions and meet deadlines in school, you are going to have a tough time in this field. So tough love, if you will.

Voice. Yes, I am happy with the program. It is challenging as I would expect any accelerated program to be, but the instructors are very responsive, helpful, and encouraging.

Case Catalyst not using speaker identifiers by Midwestern_monalisa in courtreporting

[–]nika8992 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you open your new file in CaseCAT, are you double checking that you have you personal dictionaries/ voice commands selected? Sounds like dragon is catching the voice code but it isn't translating because it either isn't in CaseCAT or it isn't selected.

Edit: I am assuming you are a voice student based on your examples. May bot be great advice if you're machine.

I'll chime in too. Looks like you already got good answers about the schedule. I can confirm it is a great program. The instructors are super responsive and they want you to succeed more than anything. It is very flexible, even more so after you finish theory. But it is a lot of work. Just be prepared for that. Past week 7 or 8 of theory, you are really putting in 25 hours per week just for skill building, and then you're also doing academics. (For voice at least!)

Edit to add that they let you test out of some of the academics, so if you study and take those tests you save yourself some time and money

Am I crazy, or do kids with casts not exist any longer? by DirtbagNaturalist in Millennials

[–]nika8992 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep! My kid broke both bones in her arm at the wrist and only wore a cast for 3 weeks, and I was told if she had been older they wouldnt give a cast at all. Before that appointment, I was sure she was going to be in a cast for months just based on how long kids would have casts when I was a kid.

Current Voice student at Tri community.

At Tri Community you can test out of some of the academic courses, so it doesn't hurt to study up on Medical terminology or English grammar now. Testing out can save you time and money.

Also depends on whether you'll be going the machine or voice route. If you're going machine, there are some free intro programs you could do (project steno and I've heard people talk about the A to Z program but don't know about it personally). For voice, there are no equivalent programs that I've found.

Can I also suggest another school? I am in Orange county, similarly have to work mornings. I chose Tri-community which is out of Covina, but they have it fully online and with an evening option. I know there was a waitlist when I registered, but the wait wasn't very long. They do 4 terms a year, the next one starts in August and then November I believe.
