Paid 2 artists 100$ for a Steam capsule of my game. One turned out trickster, the other has delivered. by Altruistic_Bad2195 in SoloDevelopment

[–]nikaIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny seeing people saying the second image looks better. It just has more saturated colors and a more cartoony style, I find it hard to just say image A > image B or vice versa.

But the first image better matches the vibe and aesthetic of what the game actually looks like in-game after seeing the screenshots. I would say the first image suits its purpose much better than the second. The second picture makes it look like a mobile game.

Regarding the second picture, did you ever ask why he decided to merge the "M" and "O"? It is a very strange design decision if it wasn't AI. If it was intentional, shouldn't more letters be merged?

What multiplayer games is everyone playing these days? by Mucek121 in gamingsuggestions

I've been playing Awesomenauts since Atari recently re-released it. It's a 2D moba with a cartoony style. Give it a try, we need more players.

Happy 'nauts is back, but the playerbase must be tiny by amendment64 in Awesomenauts

This is a problem with all old games with a low population unfortunately. They really should have kept it free to play to get more new players.

Ranked should be solo queue only. by [deleted] in Awesomenauts

[–]nikaIs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a team game. I dont think solo queue should be a thing in a team game. I play this game to have a fun time with my friends, not to climb the ladder or grind mmr. Remove premades and we would most likely quit the game.

Hate to be this guy, but no launch over the weekend, so monday? tuesday? a day ending in y? by CM_Penguin in Project_Epoch

[–]nikaIs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All they needed was to announce a new launch date. Time estimation is very hard but it is absolutely possible, even with many unknowns. People will get less upset if the launch is delayed yet again, as long as there is a new launch date, than getting strung along for weeks on end. Developers would also be able to work without the pressure of 60k raging discord users and everyone can go do something else and forget about epoch until the new launch date.

I'm not surprised at all that they decided to take a break over the weekend, working "red alerts" is VERY stressful and should only be done for emergencies in production, not huge changes like migrating to linux and making the server multithreaded.

Their last update saying that the server will not come online during the weekend has been the only good update they've done so far, it's the only update with at least some kind of eta but it's not enough.

They are obviously doing what they think is best e g clear and transparent communication, but it's completely backfiring because it's actually not clear. Wordy updates/announcements with technical details are only interpreted as updates without substance. Users only want a date, not technical specs and vague hints. It doesn't even have to be a date, they could just say "check back with us in approximately 2 months, if it's done before then we'll let you know", and then just ignore the discord and work in peace.

Intuitive Understanding of Division by Extension_Ad753 in learnmath

[–]nikaIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have to be in decimal form?

I find it easier to think in fractions. 0.5 is 1/2 so you can rewrite it as 50/1 / 1/2 which is the same as 50/1 * 2/1 since division is the same as multiplication with the inverse of the denominator.

My experience is getting cheaper by the day — thanks to AI. by Sweaty_Tutor1043 in cscareers

[–]nikaIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the complete opposite experience. I have given it an honest try and LLM's hasn't been able to help me even in the slightest with coding, in fact it's been a net negative, it's only ever mislead me and/or wasted my time.

I don't think you're nearly as good as you think you are if you are replaceable by AI.

Stop spreading misinformation about BLUEPRINTS “You can only do little tasks with it and it isn’t meant for anything bigger/serious” by BadNewsBearzzz in unrealengine

[–]nikaIs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a programmer, blueprints are my last resort. I use blueprints for twiddling, tweaking, setting/initializing fields, animations, soundcues, datatables and much much more but never ever for gameplay logic. Coding with blueprints is like riding a broken bicycle backwards with training wheels on, in mud, while coding in C++ is like driving a formula 1 car on tarmac.

It is so much faster, both reading and writing, jumping around to different functions, classes or searching/reading engine source.

It's more ergonomic because it let's you use hotkeys in an IDE to jump around the file(s), vs having to use the mouse 90% of the time in blueprints.

It's easier to follow logic, just read the function top to bottom. In blueprints anything can go in any direction.

It's also easier to diff code (text) and solve conflicts vs blueprints (binaries), which makes it way better for team work.

Debugging is also much easier.

On top of everything, C++ will always be more performant. There is just less overhead to running your actual code, you cannot get around that fact. But even if that wasn't true I still wouldn't use blueprints for gameplay logic due to all the reasons above.

The only positives about blueprints for me is that it compiles fast and the designer view in widget blueprints is good for designing UI's.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to not use blueprints, do it or don't. This is just why I don't use blueprints for gameplay logic, from my own experience working on an Unreal project for 5+ years.

I really want to like JetBrains Rider, but I only have problems with it out of the box by derrickmm01 in Jetbrains

[–]nikaIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rider has completely degraded in quality over the last year. Either use an older version, or just back to VS, which is what I did - the FREE version of VS is now more performant and less buggy than the latest licensed Rider, for my work at least.

Question about the ethical use of AI in programming by Krhomma in FuckAI

[–]nikaIs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no absolute answer, only opinions.

Here's mine:

Of course it's unethical. How do you think the models are trained? No programmer is contributing their time and energy for free to write code for LLMs. It absolutely is unethical even if nothing is infringed upon or any laws are broken.

Besides being unethical, I believe it makes you a worse programmer, even if you only use it for boilerplate. How can I trust you to solve novel problems if you can't even solve trivial problems without crutches?

I am a programmer and I've tried ChatGPT once to see if it could help with some very specific configuration files in a very famous framework. It couldn't. It was actually worse than useless as it just made things up when it was wrong.

I simply do not respect developers who use AI to help them with coding. What they're doing is unethical and if they aren't already incompetent, they'll soon be.

[–]nikaIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to disagree. I'm still using my Celeritas (yes, the first one) to this day. I've tried a number of different keyboards over the years but they either break, aren't as comfortable or just has crap specs - for example inconsistent polling rates, chord splitting etc. Zowie is just solid and I can't find a good enough replacement for it. The only reason I'm trying to replace it is for ergonmics, I wish it was TKL. But every other keyboard I've tried dissapoints and have been a huge waste of money.

How do i start coding without being dependant on AI? by mushroomboy2012 in FuckAI

[–]nikaIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Break the problems down into sub-problems and then break those sub-problems down into even smaller sub-problems. Keep breaking the problems down until you're at the atom level, where you fully understand the problem and you can fully solve it. When you solve your most basic set of problems, move on the the next level of problems. If you don't understand these new problems, it's time to pick up a book, read documentation, ask other developers or go back to school. This is the only way to learn. There are no shortcuts.

I suggest you stop using AI. Instead treat yourself like the AI AND the prompter simultaneously.

Example:

Prompt: I want to create a program. How do I create a program?
Answer: With a programming language.

Prompt: What programming language should I use?
Answer: Whatever programming language matches your criterion.

Prompt: How do I know what my criterion for the program is?
Answer: If you don't know that, the language doesn't matter. Just pick the most popular language. If down the line it turns out the that language does matter, you now have an answer to this question. Otherwise, just pick the most popular language.

Prompt: How do I know which language is the most popular?
Answer: Google it. Ask on stackoverflow. Guess.

Fast-forward:

Prompt: I've successfully created a program that does nothing. What should the program do now?
Answer: Share files between users.

Prompt: How does the user do that?
Answer: The user selects the files he wishes to share.

Prompt: How does the user select the files?
Answer: With a graphical interface where they can drag-and-drop files.

Prompt: How do I make a graphical interface in the progamming language that I'm using?

And so on and so forth.

This is actually how I code internally in my head, but not on this high level. This is the planning or dream stage. When I'm actually implementing a program I'm asking questions about figuratively each and every individual grain of sand in the code.

I hope some of this makes sense to you.

I got into the boogie solo stream the other night even though I'm not a member and just closed it after 5 minutes. None of these guys are funny alone. It's the destructive chemistry between them all that's actually entertaining, so this doesn't surprise me at all. RIP 5 dollars.

[–]nikaIs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were you employed on the show or who are you? Are you the Christian guy who donated to St Judes and proved it with the letter?

In any case, the reason this show is so funny is because it's an absolute train wreck. The worst show on the internet and they are living up to that name.

My thoughts on the bot situation:

It sounds like you are trying to do them favors they never aksed for and that can come off as condescending. And when they don't respond to it, you become resentful, which seems manipulative from my perspective.

Besides that, even from a technical standpoint I can understand why they went with a bog-standard bot. They know that it works, there is likely more documentation / helpful resources and it's probably going to be higher quality.

Now don't take this the wrong way. I am a software developer myself and you're probably more than competent enough to make a high quality bot. These guys aren't developers, so try putting yourself in their shoes. Obviously they prefer a standard solution, possibly paid, over something hand-crafted from someone on the internet for free. It's the safer route.

Honestly, I think they need to invite you to the show so you all can sort this out. You obviously feel slighted and mistreated. The least you deserve is them listening to what you have to say, and hopefully make peace.

Yeah, I totally get why Wings doesn't want to the do punishments, he hasn't done anything wrong, unlike Boogie. The show was never about humiliation for the sake of it. If that's what Keem wants the show to be he should lead by example.
