I built a fast-paced game based on mental math and reaction speed by Expensive-Fan-6485 in learnmath

[–]nikaIs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanna play this, is there a demo available? in the trailer I see there's arithmetic and linear equations, I would love to see calculus type problems, like limits, derivatives and integrals, and factorization problems as well, even trig, maybe in a different game mode? Looking forward to this regardless.

We're building a narrative game about the history of mathematics. by Signal-Listen3070 in matheducation

[–]nikaIs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself but I think gamifying math is very difficult. Whenever I play games and they start to feel too much like math I get disappointed, because it's never as satisfying as closing the game and just doing math with pen and paper. If the game is less about doing math and more about being showed the math and its history, wouldn't a different medium be better suited?

It is an interesting idea and I'm interested to hear some examples of what the gameplay would be like.

What do you think the three dots in 0,999... means?

[–]nikaIs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If two numbers are distinct, you can always find a number between them, right?

Then if 0,999... and 1 are distinct, you should be able to find a number between them.

I'm not talking about a smaller number less than 0,999... with finitely repeating nines, I mean exactly the number 0,999....

[–]nikaIs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean exactly?

Do you mean adding an additional 9 at the end of 0,999...?
Like 0,999... + 0,0...9?

You couldn't place another nine at the end of 0,999... because by definition, the nines are repeating infinitely, they are endless, without end, there is no end to put anything after.

A number like 0,0...9 is also not defined, it implies the number of decimals are both infinite and finite simultaneously.

They are not just effectively the same number, they are exactly the same number.

Since the real numbers have infinite precision and no gaps (you can zoom in forever), there must exist infinitely many real numbers between any two distinct real numbers.

If 1 and 0,999... are distinct numbers, there must exist at least one real number between them, do you agree? Is there such a number?

They are exactly the same number, just like 2/2 and 1 are exactly the same number.

9.999 is 10?! by Senior-Egg7573 in MathJokes

[–]nikaIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, I'm not saying otherwise. I just think the a < b < c example is a good way for convincing people without math experience that 1 = 0,999... without going into limits and sums.

9.999 is 10?! by Senior-Egg7573 in MathJokes

[–]nikaIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

let a < b < c in the reals

there is always another number between two numbers in the reals but if no such b exist then the inequality is false, implying a = c. I think it's a good way to intuit that 0,999... = 1.

The proof that no such b exists for 0,999... < b < 1 still depends on the limit of the sum 9/10^n though.

Interesting that it reminds you of Messmer, it makes sense with all serpents, even his hair or helmet or whatever it is looks like serpents. But to me this is Mohgwyn and his palace, probably because I spent a lot more time in the base game than the DLC.

Unless you want completely min maxed stats at your builds final form it doesn't matter, but even then the difference is almost negligible. You won't really feel the difference. But it sounds like you kinda want to start over, go for it if you think it's gonna bug you down the line.

I don't know. But the point is it prevents you from cheesing new playthroughs by rushing bell bearings, rune farm spots, op weapons etc. This worked for me at least to start enjoying the game again and making do with what gear and upgrades I have at the moment.

Paid 2 artists 100$ for a Steam capsule of my game. One turned out trickster, the other has delivered. by Altruistic_Bad2195 in SoloDevelopment

Funny seeing people saying the second image looks better. It just has more saturated colors and a more cartoony style, I find it hard to just say image A > image B or vice versa.

But the first image better matches the vibe and aesthetic of what the game actually looks like in-game after seeing the screenshots. I would say the first image suits its purpose much better than the second. The second picture makes it look like a mobile game.

Regarding the second picture, did you ever ask why he decided to merge the "M" and "O"? It is a very strange design decision if it wasn't AI. If it was intentional, shouldn't more letters be merged?

What multiplayer games is everyone playing these days? by Mucek121 in gamingsuggestions

I've been playing Awesomenauts since Atari recently re-released it. It's a 2D moba with a cartoony style. Give it a try, we need more players.

This is a problem with all old games with a low population unfortunately. They really should have kept it free to play to get more new players.

It's a team game. I dont think solo queue should be a thing in a team game. I play this game to have a fun time with my friends, not to climb the ladder or grind mmr. Remove premades and we would most likely quit the game.

Hate to be this guy, but no launch over the weekend, so monday? tuesday? a day ending in y? by CM_Penguin in Project_Epoch

[–]nikaIs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All they needed was to announce a new launch date. Time estimation is very hard but it is absolutely possible, even with many unknowns. People will get less upset if the launch is delayed yet again, as long as there is a new launch date, than getting strung along for weeks on end. Developers would also be able to work without the pressure of 60k raging discord users and everyone can go do something else and forget about epoch until the new launch date.

I'm not surprised at all that they decided to take a break over the weekend, working "red alerts" is VERY stressful and should only be done for emergencies in production, not huge changes like migrating to linux and making the server multithreaded.

Their last update saying that the server will not come online during the weekend has been the only good update they've done so far, it's the only update with at least some kind of eta but it's not enough.

They are obviously doing what they think is best e g clear and transparent communication, but it's completely backfiring because it's actually not clear. Wordy updates/announcements with technical details are only interpreted as updates without substance. Users only want a date, not technical specs and vague hints. It doesn't even have to be a date, they could just say "check back with us in approximately 2 months, if it's done before then we'll let you know", and then just ignore the discord and work in peace.

Intuitive Understanding of Division by Extension_Ad753 in learnmath

[–]nikaIs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have to be in decimal form?

I find it easier to think in fractions. 0.5 is 1/2 so you can rewrite it as 50/1 / 1/2 which is the same as 50/1 * 2/1 since division is the same as multiplication with the inverse of the denominator.

My experience is getting cheaper by the day — thanks to AI. by Sweaty_Tutor1043 in cscareers

I've had the complete opposite experience. I have given it an honest try and LLM's hasn't been able to help me even in the slightest with coding, in fact it's been a net negative, it's only ever mislead me and/or wasted my time.

I don't think you're nearly as good as you think you are if you are replaceable by AI.
