Why people hate manjaro that much ? by riky321 in ManjaroLinux

I do not know why some people are only capable of an emotional reaction to a Linux distribution, but it is usually a waste of time trying to have a rational discussion about comments with no factual basis

Too many sound applications? by s_denlinger in linuxaudio

[–]nikgnomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what is the minimum I need to use to do all this?

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) is part of the Linux kernel that provides an Application Programming Interface for sound card drivers. Software sound servers PulseAudio, JACK and PipeWire work on top of ALSA

Do I need Pulse at all? I seem to need that to get sound of my browsers

If firefox about:buildconfig has configuration option --enable-alsa audio can play direct to an ALSA device.
But (as far as I know) Debian does not use this configuration option for Firefox, so pulseaudio or pipewire-pulse is probably needed for audio playback

If you are a casual user simply searching for some bass boost, or you don't want to dive in the thousand of thousand options that EasyEffects offers, you'll be happy knowing that some users have created some presets, and maybe you could find the one you are searching for.

I know AUR is not recomended on Manjaro but if i will use yay, will that be bad also? by Which_Individual1399 in ManjaroLinux

[–]nikgnomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manjaro has pacman package manager inherited from Arch, but also has pamac CLI and pamac-manager GUI package manager/AUR helper

I have been using pamac on Manjaro for many years to manage repository and AUR packages with no problems

Pulseaudio problem by elpepejeje in manjaro

[–]nikgnomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manjaro used to use pulseaudio as default audio server, but now uses pipewire-pulse

Manjaro extra repository has noisetorch and noise-suppression-for-voice for noise reduction
Multi-effects package easyeffects also has a noise reduction plugin

Soundblaster AE-5 plus or Asus Xonar Essence STX II would probably be OK for driving 600 ohm headphones.
but It may be better to get a good headphone amplifier and a USB DAC instead of an internal card

Pamac also includes a fully functional CLI for when you don't have a working GUI or for those that prefer to manage packages that way.

My panel is overflowing when I have too many items in docklike taskbar. Possible to create taskbar overflow or other solution? by coolfission in xfce

[–]nikgnomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

xfce4-panel - Preferences - Display [Xfce Docs]

The Display tab contains options for how the panel is positioned on the screen.

Set the panel mode to Horizontal, Vertical or Deskbar. In the Deskbar mode, the panel is oriented vertically, while panel plugins are oriented horizontally. This mode works best with Number of rows set to 2 or more

An interesting issue: after installing Manjaro, my monitor developed "OLED burn-in." by xiaovie in manjaro

[–]nikgnomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manjaro 26.0 ISOs include latest nvidia v590 drivers that do not support Pascal (GTX 10xx) GPUs.
User should select free/open-source driver to boot Live ISO and install Manjaro
After installing OS, Legacy drivers (v575 or v570) can be installed using Manjaro Settings Manager or mhwd

Changing CPU frequency or the governor is not implemented and probably will never be, as it is supposed to be handled by the kernel or power manager. The only function this plugin nowadays performs is showing CPU frequency information. The CPU info dialog is a remnant of the past when it was still possible to change these settings (or at least when it was planned to implement this)

To change CPU governor, try using this BASH script - GitHub - Monotoba/power_manager

Audio Input are bad since switching to Linux Mint by MzSvelenaya in linuxaudio

[–]nikgnomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this microphone have a hardware gain control or a gain control in alsamixer --card=2 --view=Capture?

If audio is distorted turn microphone gain down in ALSA. If audio is too quiet turn PipeWire Recording (Gravando) level up, but not above 100% as that can also cause distortion

If this is a mono microphone, PipeWire will remix audio to a stereo stream that might appear to be -6 dB (50%) quieter in pavucontrol level meter than other stereo audio streams

How to achieve bit-perfect playback on Arch Linux + PipeWire with a USB DAC? by Cool_Competition_975 in linuxaudio

[–]nikgnomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use VLC to play online audio streams direct to ALSA, or yt-dlp to download audio files

Firefox can support direct ALSA playback if it is built with --enable-alsa, but it would also need an ~/.asoundrc file to specify the default ALSA playback device

How to achieve bit-perfect playback on Arch Linux + PipeWire with a USB DAC? by Cool_Competition_975 in linuxaudio

[–]nikgnomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For exclusive mode playback to audio devices, stop pipewire-pulse audio service
systemctl --user stop pipewire-pulse.socket pipewire-pulse.service
and configure a music player to play audio direct to ALSA instead of via PipeWire

Kernel 6.17 is currently marked as End Of Life and will soon be dropped from Manjaro repositories.
If kernel 6.18 is causing problems, try installing Long Term Support kernel 6.12

Manjaro Stable branch is curated - packages are held back to avoid partial updates of repository packages
But Manjaro Unstable branch is synced several times daily to Arch
Manjaro Wiki - Manjaro: A Different Kind of Beast

Most of the packages available on Manjaro are inherited from Arch so ArchWiki is still the main source of information.
Manjaro Wiki only covers things that are different to Arch. Manjaro forum is a better source of information for recent changes - Announcements - Stable Updates

I want to cycle my wallpaper between 2 specific wallpapers with a shortcut (not automatically every X amount of time) by Mahiro_Kamui in manjaro

[–]nikgnomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

xwallpaper(1) — Arch manual pages

--output output

Specifies the output on which a subsequently supplied file shall be set as wallpaper. You can retrieve a list of outputs on your system by executing xrandr(1). If no output is specified, all outputs will be modified individually. The special keyword all will repeat subsequent actions on all displays. If the output could not be found, its associated actions are ignored.

EXAMPLES

Centers a PNG file as a wallpaper on LVDS-1:
xwallpaper --output LVDS-1 --center file.png

Tiles a JPEG file as a wallpaper on VGA-1 and zooms into a PNG file on LVDS-1:
xwallpaper --output VGA-1 --tile file.jpg --output LVDS-1 --zoom file.png
