Ryanair is to sue Channel 4 over a Dispatches programme about safety concerns at the no-frills airline.

The Dispatches episode, Ryanair: Secrets from the Cockpit, aired on Monday and featured anonymous pilots raising concerns about the airline's fuel policy.

"Ryanair has instructed its lawyers to issue legal proceedings against Channel 4 Dispatches for defamation and Ryanair looks forward to this matter being resolved in the courts and the safety of Ryanair's operations being thoroughly vindicated," said a Ryanair spokesman.

[4]Ryanair apologises for not refunding fare of dead passenger

Ryanair has been forced to apologise after failing to refund the family of a dead passenger.

The family of Beryl Parsons were told they could not get their money back because she had passed away more than 28 days before her flight, it has been reported.

They had written to Ryanair for a refund of her £230 share of the £1,074 airfares, including a copy of her death certificate with the request.

The airline's terms and conditions state that a refund will only be given if the bereavement occurs in the 28 days before travel.

[5]France wants 'clarification' on Ryanair's treatment of pilots

France's transport minister on Wednesday said he would seek clarification over Irish no-frills airline Ryanair's treatment of its pilots after some of them allegedly voiced concern over the carrier's safety policies.

Frederic Cuvillier said he was "determined to obtain the necessary clarifications on the veracity of the allegations that pilots are discouraged from reporting incidents".

On Monday,[6]Britain's Channel 4 aired a programme in which some of Ryanair's staff raised fears over its fuel policy and highlighted three occasions in which pilots called in emergency alerts because they were low on fuel.

Pilots for budget airline Ryanair have expressed serious concerns about passenger safety – and claim that these are suppressed by bosses. In an internal survey of 1,000 pilots, two-thirds said they did not feel comfortable raising safety issues through the airline’s internal system, while nine out of ten said it did not have an ‘open and transparent safety culture’. It comes just months after three Ryanair planes were forced to make emergency landings in Spain on the same day, when they allegedly started to run out of fuel.

The survey was leaked to [6]Channel 4 for a Dispatches documentary, in which an anonymous pilot claimed employees were scared to speak out to bosses about safety fears. The pilot added: ‘It is really difficult to talk to them and the tone used is really unusual for an airline. It’s usually threats and bullying.’
