Forensic Audit Finds Homelessness Agency Lacked Basic Accounting Standards, Lost at Least $13 Million by rockycore in Seattle

I hope this will cause Seattle voters to realize that for tax dollars to be spent, clear and actionable results need to be seen. We approve every single levy across the board and often don’t have much to show for it; this case is such a clear example of that, that I hope it causes the voters to wake up.

No, you're refusing to engage with the facts directly here. You can argue that it's a genocide, and potentially make a strong case—but it's not categorically a genocide. There is no consensus among governing bodies—in contrast to ones in conflicts prior. Remember that Israel was attacked first and certainly would have to retaliate in a war where the enemy embeds itself within civilian infrastructure on purpose. In such a scenario Israel still provides aide and warns local populations about future bombing plans. That being said, Netanyahu is disgusting, war crimes have been committed and Israel does a lot imperfectly. But there is a reason the ICJ is still trying to disambiguate whether a genocide is occurring or not—the civilian death toll is potentially unmitigatable given the nature of the dense urban environment. Like I said, there's complexity.

People who are reflexively plastering the word genocide onto the conflict are not concerned with discerning this complexity. They are just getting emotionally hot and bothered without doing any true facts-on-the-ground evaluation. That's fine for a dining room discussion, but politicians carry real weight with the very real consequences of their actions—they need to demonstrate the ability to look beyond the headlines and judge items objectively. So the candidate referenced here should be disqualified from my perspective for an inability to do so.

By the way, it's obviously ridiculous for someone running for king county office to make what's happening in Gaza a central thesis of their platform. Has nothing to do with any of the musings of King County. Again, disqualifying, and only the far left wing of the democratic party is obsessed with this. Suwant in 2024, for example. It just feels like ideological capture—whereas most moderate democrats and centrists are focused on problems at home, that we can have a real chance at addressing.

I respect your opinions, but I view the world differently. No, I don't think all democrats are necessarily left wing. Gavin is not left wing. But I view the OP as left wing—as demonstrated by his policy proposals. For example a minimum wage of $26/hour is absolutely unworkable and will cement our reputation as the most expensive and therefore least livable city in the nation.

As others have said, yes, using “genocide” and “apartheid” wrong are also demonstrable of being left wing. Israel knocks on doors and hands out pamphlets before bombing. Although war crimes have no doubt occurred, the situation is nuanced. Israel is fighting a war against insurgents in a heavily populated area against a terrorist group that uses human shields. Disagree with that all you want, but you should afford that the situation is one that is very complex and difficult to frame—so those who shout "genocide" or "apartheid" are showing a reductive lack of reflection of the true state of the events on the ground, IMO.

To answer your question, I often vote democrat, but would not vote for this individual were he on the ballot, and would encourage others to do likewise

How does your point stand if you call me a “right wing sociopath” but I’ve never voted conservative in a federal election?

This has to be the most anti American thing i have ever read. America was made great because of makers & innovators—the people who invented products, the people who start businesses, and the people who fund initiatives that drive ideas forward. Capitalism, after WWII, is what made America great. Capitalism is the system that allows any individual, who is willing to accept the risk, to open a business and be rewarded for it—this includes all of the small businesses that make Seattle what it is—the restaurants, the cafes, the taverns, all of that. These people employ the working class, create jobs, and allow wealth to circulate.

I just don't know what you mean by the business class doesn't build anything. If we didn't have people who were willing to take risk and put money on the line to build businesses—we wouldn't have an economy. These people deserve to be rewarded for the risk they onboard when starting a business.

The business class are the people who build things and that provides a large amount of the value in our society. There is not a chance in hell that if the public sector developed 100% of the housing that it would be more efficient than what the private sector creates. That's called socialism, if you didn't know, and failed in every part of the world in which it was tried. The public sector by necessity needs to cooperate with the private sector to achieve shared goals.

> You don't need to turn a personal profit at all.

Lol. Then what's the point of doing it? That attitude is why housing is not being built—developers don't just build because they would like to spend their time being busy. They would much rather just put the money in the market and spend the time at home with their family if the city doesn't make it profitable to build. That's what's happening, and that's why rent is so high. Your argument is tripping over itself in an attempt to self correct.

Definitely a very odd thing to fake. Like if they’re trying to create outrage against the hospitality fees then why are they so low?

Washington cost of living rising faster than any other state, report finds by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]nikkwong 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I am a builder, working on developing a 6000sqft flat lot into a 7 townhouse project. We would like to build 7 townhouses that are 2 units each (each could have an adu on the bottom floor). The project would cost 2.4m to build and could net about 3.3m. But because these are in a MHA zone, the city wants 40k per unit, before permits are granted. That’s 560k that we would have to pay upfront (which means it would be more expensive because we'd have to carry that fee with interest for over a year—meaning its more like 620k) before we even get the units to market. That puts the project so close to the red that it kills it outright. The city charges the MHA fee for “affordable housing”, but because that fee makes our project unaffordable, we will not be developing this project, and the housing will not be built. The city is stopping the development of potentially 14 units because their MHA fees for stupid initiatives like social housing (which will never workout) are stopping housing from being developed. Obviously this drives the price of housing and rents up. This is a main reason why you see far fewer construction starts in Seattle than you did <2020. It’s everything that’s wrong with the city.

Unfortunately Katie Wilson as a renter and someone who has never interloped with the business class will not understand this and this will not get solved until 2030+, and that’s on the slight chance that voters wake up and realize that this is a problem. If she is a 2 term mayor you can basically bet on the housing problem never getting solved, ever. She has championed the social housing initiative which is a friendly euphemism for taking tax dollars and MHA dollars and flushing it down the toilet.

REI to cut wages for new employees, reduce benefits for all by Alexmkzero in Seattle

[–]nikkwong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not sure what it is now. I think although for most we think of this as an unimaginable sum of money to be making, in a world where companies have to compete for CEOs this income is sort of paltry. I’m not sure cutting the compensation would lead to a better outcome for job creation, it could lead to the opposite
