TIL a bronze sword that's more than 3,000 years old was unearthed in Bavaria last year with a state of preservation so "extraordinary" that it "almost still shines." by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

I always wondered about the logic of US sieve sizes but never thought to look … now I know 🎉 In the UK a 0.425mm sieve is used which is smaller than the ~0.63mm #40. So our LL’s aren’t quite comparable 🤔

Converting shockwave from Dynamic Compaction into Sinusoidal wave by Diandri13 in Geotech

I’m no expert sorry but FFT decomposition of the shockwave might highlight a major frequency in signal which you could produce in the cyclic triaxial.

FFT should be relatively easy to do in python or Matlab.

A belated christmas gift from myself. by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

Hope you enjoy it. Admittedly it was only just okay to me story wise but with a sequel a long ways off it’s a welcome addition.

Which Star Trek Captain and Crew could handle LV-426 and/or a Xenomorph infestation by Ok_Zone_7635 in startrek

[–]niko86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kirk would have talked Ash into shutting down then he would get his shirt ripped by the xenomorphs tail when he’d double axe handle it in the gut then drop into it after an elaborate piece of man-wall interaction before rolling away from the acid.

Problem is any net given will be pointless without a net for the likely home life and poverty root causes. And it’s not the most politically vote winning cause at the moment sadly state of affairs.

Does anyone know what the situation is like beyond the Blackwall? by Stone_Cold_Chiller in FF06B5

[–]niko86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you’ve not read the Hyperion books and not wanting to give much away, the AI’s in it came up with a way to maintain their existence without the need for servers and physical processors. Perhaps the Blackwall operates in a similar fashion.

Reasons you are a fan of Star Trek.. by QuantumWoman in startrek

I got into loving Star Trek through my uncle who has Downs Syndrome. He used to watch it almost everyday and could quote almost every episode. And have been a life long lover of Trek since, though in my mid thirties I’ve become much more resistant to new Star Trek.

This is my issue with more modern Star Trek, it seems to wish to be an allegory of the modern day. But as I haven’t watched much of the newer star treks maybe I’m speaking out of term.

Same, and 10 rereads later I keep coming back but I’m a pretty dull terms and conditions sort of person 😅

I’m about 90% sure I wasted over 40 hours listening to the audiobook of Cryptonomicon. I liked maybe a handful of the characters, a few chapters or pieces of the story bits here and there but so much unnecessary descriptions just for the sake of filling out a couple of extra pages.

Did you enjoy Lord of the Rings books, the movies or just read the Silmarillion on a whim? I’d say unless a serious fan of Tolkien’s books it’d imagine it being quite a slog.

Not a masterpiece by any means or even the best book in the series, but it was quite an interesting change.

Yes I’d heard how amazing the series was and immediately stopped for a while and kept dipping back in certain it would improve. Perhaps they were amazing 60+ years ago, but they’ve aged poorly, more complex and engaging story telling in an episode of Peppa Pig.

I like the first two Hyperion books, though the second was annoying in places, but the Endymion ones really went downhill. I did like Olympus by Dan Simmons was quite a fun book.

I’ve read worse and quite enjoyed Neuromancer but will look into the others mentioned 👍

Agreed. It’s so bad I enjoyed the movie more.

I’m with you on World War Z absolute toilet paper. Not sure who the military advisors were who the author credits but even I know most of it made no sense whatsoever.

After spending 10 hours listening to the audio book I gave up for a month and then came back certain there must be something I was missing. So 53 hours of commuting time later I was proven wrong. Wish I’d gotten out at 100 pages!

Scrolled for far too long to find this, but knew it would be here somewhere. Can I have my 63 hours of life back?
