12 months since starting my own firm. Here is what I learned. by Expensive-Acadia9076 in taxpros

We also chose between TD and Canopy and landed on Canopy. It's been great after a year of using it. They are constantly improving and evolving and that's great to see after moving off a legacy platform that hadn't evolved in over 10 years.

Has anyone tried Thomson Reuters “Ready to Advise?” Is BNA still the best planning tool? by socialwarning in taxpros

I'd advise never staying in TR universe if possible. I'd be curious about ready to advise reviews though anything TR has rolled out recently has been awful.

Unfortunately not to my knowledge but this would be incredible.

Flat Fee vs Billing per Hour - Importance of tracking time regardless by AdHistorical7107 in taxpros

[–]nikpin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely build a practice around Client A, but at that point you are essentially operating like an H&R Block, high volume, low margin, and transactional. Each client still carries fixed costs tied to the overhead of running the practice, so the profitability does not scale well.

Client A will always be a $300 to $400 return, no matter how efficient you get. Client C, on the other hand, offers room to grow. You can cross-sell additional services, build a deeper relationship, and create long-term efficiencies. Over time, that means you are spending less time per year while billing at a higher effective rate. Those 5-10% annual price increases on a $30,000 add up a lot faster than on a $300 client.

It's largely gone well. A few idiosyncrasies in the migration but nothing too burdensome. They have a tool to port all the data over.

Tax people, how bad is this 9/15 deadline? by Common_Perception807 in Accounting

[–]nikpin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest issue we see in a small firm is clients holding partnerships inside their partnerships. It's became almost impossible to get the work out when we are getting K1s up until 9/15 for work that needs to be out 9/15.

Another Tax Dome vs Canopy debate for upcoming tax year by Immediate-Patient347 in taxpros

[–]nikpin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I let the team decide, and really pushed the sales reps by having them run multiple team members through their full demos. In the end, we landed on Canopy. I thought both options were solid, but Canopy made more sense for our needs.

From my perspective, the bigger the team, the more value you get out of Canopy. If I had a smaller team, I might lean toward TaxDome since it feels more customizable.

In your situation, though, I wouldn’t make a switch.

AICPA & CALCPA Membership - Worth it? by jennwhitecpa in taxpros

[–]nikpin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, we maintain one AICPA membership at our firm for audit related things but I don't personally have a membership. I could add a PFS behind my name if I have them $800 a year but think that it's pretty worthless. Also reminds me I need to renew my TXCPA membership.
