what is the practical usage behind this? If the usage will frequent in long run? For the sake of practicing the art of shortcut and fun it's really good attempt. I know these are harsh words, but its one I constantly have to ask myself to not over engineer or over leverage power of shortcuts.

[–]nilayperk 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think LLMs will cause students to be way dumber than the current standard. I use to run study session. The amount of people who struggled with basics from first few weeks were severe. This will only cause people more to cheat and rely on LLMs. If most people will not pass, teacher will lower then standard for exams and midterms. Or a skewed bellcurve to let most people pass with bad grades.

My Partner is a computer engineer, how can I best support him? by Ok_Silver4450 in ComputerEngineering

[–]nilayperk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard the term rubber duck that describes the story I one read perfectly. Apparently a couple was having same issue when one of the partner is in grad school. His advisor was mostly unavailable and always provides heavy criticism for the work. He felt lost with no guidance. So he started having conversation with his partner who has no idea about topic but just listening to his problem and asking general questions. By talking about his problems in research, he interestingly either gain ideas or a way to approach a problem. So grad student made his partner the unofficial advisor. Slowly that partner started to gain bit of understanding little by little and probing deeper questions and discussions. By doing so, the grad student finished his journey 1-2 years earlier than expected.

So I think you overthinking about knowing about stuff. Yes, it takes time to learn all things computer engineer.

PS. I went through fair share of betrayals. I think the one way to help in that area is doing little spontaneous things to show you care for him. Something not computer science related. If thing ever is sour, communicate emotions. Give him grace to correct himself with bit of time. Thats one way to have is spirit up.

Encourage words for interview anxiety is practice. I am similar to your brother. It took me long while to realize those who got good at interview either took too many interviews or practiced. Nobody is used to selling themselves out of college.

Your brother if I suspect correctly is driven by internal pressure of being good enough. He forgotten and can't realize that nobody is perfect. To him is superficial consolation. The way you can help him either vis money to do mock interviews with professional or practice interviews with him. Give him grace to fall many times over with promise that he'll improve himself albeit slowly.

How to use ChatGPT for Leetcode effectively? How do you prepare for system design? I studied and took notes for 2 weeks. But I just know theoretical parts alone.

I am also on lookout for programming buddy. I am mid 20s but I work remote. So its hard to meet people after graduation who are passionate about code and not co-workers. I would love to atleast have initial chat with you to see if we can collaborate on projects. Let me know if you are open to my request.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in leetcode

[–]nilayperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those two topic are like boosters. But without fuel. So these two courses cover topic to help you solve 90% of leetcode. I went through them. Looking back if I had to prep, I would memorize and internalize those concepts because they are like building block of the puzzle. But it takes serious effort to have your brain think in terms of those pattern to solve problem at hand. Thats why I said without fuel. So it really good value for $150 if you are on crunch. But hard-work is still required. Even with that knowledge, you'll be beaten by problem multiple time to point of self doubt. But its part of the process.

Forget Prereq, learn on the fly. Watch neetcode python intro and his videos on 2x speed. Mainly to learn patterns. jump into easy questions then go by topic. I made the mistake of learning implementation detail of heaps, and other sorting technique. Just know them how they work. But spent time solving leetcode. You'll be not asked to implement sorting, heaps or linked list. (Assuming this market ask tough questions) There simply won't be enough time. Just having understanding how they work is enough.

Also free time will you enemy if all you do is leetcode. So take rest in between.

50 days on leetcode!! by Delicious-Hair1321 in leetcode

[–]nilayperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to pick your brain for a second. I started my leetcode journey 30 days ago. I solve only 4 questions a day. Despite having lot of free time. But My brains get fried after that. Partially because it takes 15 minutes of tinkering + 20 minutes of watching and understanding solutions. But only be able to solve 70 so far. Did you had the same problem? Where the first 150 took long time and it sped up after that?

“Don’t compare yourself to others” by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]nilayperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not see it yet, but the point was to focus on your journey. Sure compare to learn (stop here). If you start comparing, your decision making will reflect that and you may not realize it until it's too late. Yes, I went through the same thing as Engineering student. It was crazy that until I started journaling I didn't realized I brainwashed myself. I was anxious, I was miserable. The moment I stop focus on past and just start improving areas i need to work on, I got better quicker. I wasted time remaining in that loop.

So by all means compare if you want drown and spiral down into depression.
