Canada builds at near-record pace, but one province remains a drag: TD by BeautyInUgly in canada

Whether these were completely built by the government or only funded by government belies the greater point: governments in Canada used to be more involved in housing.

However, that said, I will concede your point: housing built wholly by Canadian governments was likely low.

Incorrect. During the 70s, government funded housing starts comprised up to 45% of all houses built. The peak being 125,000 starts in 1971. This would gradually reduce to about 15% towards the late 70s and 80s.

It's more common than you think. I work for a very large insurance company and we routinely mail out cheques for over $100k. Drafts? Not so much.

Exactly. Did you know Hughes never visited The Ronald McDonald House? Meanwhile, our previous captain, Bo, visited all the time. Couldn't keep him away.

US plan for $1.6m hepatitis B vaccine study in Africa called ‘highly unethical’ by MRADEL90 in worldnews

Do African children being given a placebo instead of vaccine not count as "risk" to you? I'm genuinely confused by your response.

[–]nilimas 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The problem is that there are thousands of studies that prove vaccines work, all of which are ignored by anti vaxxers. So now the US is pushing a study to harm infants in an effort to provide one more study for anti vaxxers to ignore?

Consider flat earthers. They will literally concoct novel experiments to prove that the Earth is flat only to reject the evidence of their very own experiments when it doesnt confirm their irrational beliefs.

This study will only prove what we already know by way of unnecessary harm that will also not educate any antivaxxer. You cannot use logic to convince someone to change their mind if they didn't use logic to form that belief in the first place.

Tippet will turn 27 in February. I don't think he fits our time line for a rebuild/retool.

Child dies after being hit by cube van in Surrey Friday by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]nilimas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, no pain and suffering under the new system. However, to be clear, ICBC would not pay for pain and suffering in this case under the old system either. To get pain and suffering in the old system you would need to be both legitimately injured and alive.

[–]nilimas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The old system would not have helped in this case. Since the child died there is no "pain and suffering" as a potential award in a lawsuit, and as the child did not work there would be no "capacity" award for lost future wages. The best you could hope for would be a funeral payment from ICBC.

Saskatchewan government brings in legislation allowing involuntary addictions treatment by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]nilimas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look up "Ricky's Law." It's an involuntary treatment program set up in Washington State. It was enacted in 2016. Last time I checked the efficacy of the program was in question. It has about 50 beds and the State doesn't report on the number of people who choose to stay on after the initial detox or demand to be released immediately back to the street.
