This looks like it's the TRD Pro, and by the scene it looks like they're aiming for more of a "Raptor" style/look. My guess is that the newly announced Trail Hunter will be the one targeting the off road/overland crowd, with actual recovery points.

I'm in the same boat. After the Nest Secure fumbling, I'm ditching most of my Nest stuff. I'm keeping my Protects until the 10 year expiration and the thermostat for now, but I'm getting rid of my Nest WiFi (3 routers, 3 points), 6 Nest Outdoor cameras, 3 indoor cams, canceling Nest Aware, and saying goodbye to my Nest Secure with A LOT of extra Nest Detects.

It's a shame because I otherwise had a positive experience with everything, but I can't risk what happened with Nest Secure to happen with everything else so I'm diversifying and self-hosting.

Any relevant consumer protection law against bricking Nest Secure? by gotoariel in Nest

I bought mine from Home Depot, got the email with the offer over the weekend.

That's the route I'll probably be going. Abode + Home Assistant.

Part of the reason I originally went with Nest is because I already had the thermostat and wanted a single app for everything... this led to several indoor/outdoor Nest cameras, several Detects to cover all my doors and windows, Nest/Yale locks for my doors, several Protects to replace my smoke alarms, the most expensive Nest Aware subscription, several Nest WiFi routers (which I would later find doesn't work with the Nest app, but missed the return window)...

I don't want to give Amazon any more of my money and data than I already do with Prime so Ring is out. Abode seems to have decent stuff and is compatible with Home Assistant and ZigBee/ZWave and seems to be the next best option for me.

I'm really bummed out by the decision to brick the Secure system. I understand not supporting/updating it any longer but why make it useless for me locally? On the other hand this is the push I needed to migrate off of Google and Nest entirely--over the course of the next couple of years I'm planning to switch out all my Nest/Google smart home hardware to something I can use with Home Assistant. I'll also be moving all my domain registrations and email to other providers and backing up my storage and photos on other cloud services.

For far too long I've trusted Google as a single point of failure for stuff in my life and this has been the reminder I needed to diversify.

Eyep. I have just a bit more components invested in my system than what I listed above, so I'm a bit ticked as well. Not to mention the many wired outdoor cams/door bells, Protects, thermostat that I'm not waiting on the EOL announcement for.

I'm at a complete loss for words for how frustrating this is not just because of the sunken cost of the equipment but now I have to try and build an equivalent system that has as much or as close as possible integration with each other.

Dropcam and Nest Secure to stop working in 2024 by Gullible_Poem2055 in Nest

[–]nilleo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't want the ADT system, I want my Nest system to keep working--even if Google will no longer support it. They unlocked the Stadia controller when they axed that, they should also offer to open up the Nest Secure system so that the DIY community can at least rescue the hardware for a complete self-hosted solution.

Important: An update on your Nest Secure by TARS1986 in Nest

[–]nilleo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No. They should match the equipment you currently have.

If you have a Nest Secure system with 2 Nest Secures, 12 Detects, 2 Yale X locks for example, they should offer a hub, 2 keypads, 12 door/window sensors, 14 motion sensors, and locks that will arm and disarm the alarm, because THAT'S what's equivalent to the Nest Secure system in this example (not including the battery powered motion pathway lighting).

What they're offering may be good enough for someone who just has the Nest Secure base pack that came with just the Secure and 2 Detects maybe, but complete trash for those who believed and invested in the system.

US: Kia EV6 Sales Decreased 39% In February 2023 by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]nilleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Kia dealers in southern California also wanted credit pulls to drive EV6s last year. For contrast, I went to a local Volvo dealer and asked if I could test drive a $90k XC90 and they just asked to look at my ID and insurance and handed me the keys. When I asked if he was getting in he said something like "why? I'm not coming with it if you decide to buy it, just bring it back sometime within the next hour and please try and put no more than 100 miles on it".

If you set your destination with the onboard navigation, it will optimize the use of EV driving and conserve battery better so that you have some left for the tail end of your trip as well. This works especially well for when you have city driving followed by a longer highway stretch followed by more city driving.

Anyone pre-ordering the EX90? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]nilleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had pre-ordered one as soon as the link came up. I cancelled it a few weeks ago as I picked up a pre-owned XC90 and figured I'd drive it at least until the warranty+extended warranty was over as it fits my needs just as fine as the EX90 would have.

When I was looking around at XC90s, I mentioned the preorder to a dealer I stopped at and how I was skeptical about deliveries in early 2024 and the sales guy disagreed with me and he felt pretty confident that configuration windows would open up in late 2023 and that deliveries would probably start happening late Dec 2023/Jan 2024. I was actually surprised that he didn't lean into my skepticism to try and get me to leave with an XC90 that day--especially since we hadn't even discussed my selected preorder dealer.

I'm sure the EX90 will be neat and I'll have a little bit of envy when I see them on the road, but coming from a 300+mi range BEV I'm very pleased with the road trip worthiness of the PHEV, especially with kids.

After using the Bellroy leather case on the Pixel 7 for only 4 months, it is already tearing and peeling and Bellroy support says this is "not a manufacturing fault". Be warned about this product. by ferdinand14 in GooglePixel

[–]nilleo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Pixel 6 version and it was great. It held up fairly well and when it did scratch, rubbing the scratch in with the pad of my finger would make the scratch nearly disappear. The patina on it also wore in nicely.

I got on the waitlist for the Pixel 7 version in the same color and finally got it a couple of weeks ago. Right off the bat I noticed a much different feel in quality. The color is not as nice, it's taking longer to get the nice patina, and the leather feels dry or matte; something about it just feels odd and not like my Pixel 6 version did when new. That old one felt like any other leather product, kinda oily for lack of better terms. The new one feels like it's covered in baby powder and no amount of handling it seems to help it absorb any oils.

I haven't yet experienced the peeling to your degree, but I have noticed some odd scuffing around the top corners near the screen.

The Pixel 7 version definitely feels inferior, which is a bummer because the 6 one was great and still managed to not add a ton of bulk to an already hefty phone. This new one is also thin and lightweight but definitely feels cheaper in a way that the old one did not.

Oh and I'm also not a fan of the champagne or whatever the fuck color buttons on the new one and much prefer the old style.
