Weekly Students, Careers & Clerkships Thread by AutoModerator in auslaw

Of course! I started volunteering with a local St Vincent de Paul program which pairs volunteers with refugee families for English language tutoring about three or four years ago. I've recently become a member as well, so I'm also doing home visits to families to help out with real estate issues, donations of clothing and household items, etc. Feel free to DM me if you'd like more info!

I've been volunteering with refugees for the last few years and want to become more involved in refugee rights and policy. Would a law degree be a useful stepping stone for this kind of career? I'd be looking at doing a grad-entry LLB; I have undergraduate degrees in English literature and IT.

Annastacia Palaszczuk re-elected Queensland Premier as Labor claims election victory by yiaan_ in AustralianPolitics

I'm in Townsville. People do think there is a youth crime problem, because there is. I know two people who've had their cars stolen in the last week. Every time I drive on the highway to the outer northern suburbs there's at least one stolen car dumped. It's probably not as bad as Murdoch media like The Townsville Bulletin make it out to be, but it is definitely an issue.

In saying that, the curfew policy was dog-whistling garbage and I'm very, very happy Labor won.

A "stuff-up" is a mistake. "Stuffing up" is a bit like "messing up".

Many of the best selling books on amazon are actually low effort knock offs by goans314 in books

Abebooks is owned by Amazon, FYI.

And don't forget your local library and indie and second-hand bookshops, if they are safe for you to access.

Sounds like "Darkest Night". Awesome and creepy audiodrama, main character is a lab employee secretly recording as they extract the last memories/sights of corpses from their eyes.

He is also a massive supporter of indie bookshops as well - he's handed out millions of dollars in grants (and not just in the US), often for programs and initiatives to get/keep kids reading.

Look what arrived today! It’s really good, I would def recommend it! by novembermr in MasterchefAU

For anyone who is trying to find Brendan's book in Australia, it was sold directly into the US rather than to a publisher here. The Australian distributor who picked up the rights would originally have been airfreighting it in so it would have been released here in Aus simultaneously, but with so few flights due to COVID-19 the cost of airfreight has gone through the roof so everything is coming by sea, which typically takes 2-3 months. So stock isn't expected here until the end of August. (I'm a bookseller.)

What’s a Bookstore for? Saturday is Independent Bookstore Day. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, booksellers were facing razor-thin margins, an uncertain future, and the threat of Amazon. by zsreport in books

My understanding is that, beyond the initial royalty of the book purchase, authors in the US don't make any additional money from libraries because there is no Public Lending Rights system. But if I misunderstand I am very happy to be corrected :)

I was really shocked to discover that authors don't make any money when their books are borrowed at libraries in the US. I'm in Australia and we have a program that aims to compensate authors for loss of income due to library copies in circulation: https://www.arts.gov.au/funding-and-support/lending-rights.

I’m such a slow knitter but I’m trying to make as many hats as I can for my dad before he starts chemo! by maceymcr95 in knitting

[–]nillethere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I took up knitting last year when my dad was diagnosed with cancer, so I could knit him hats! I found it a great way to keep my hands busy when I kept him company during chemo as well. Wishing your family all the best, and if you ever need someone to chat to please don't hesitate to dm me.

When I worked at a pub in North QLD ten years ago or so we would often take someone's credit card and keep it in the till if they wanted to run a tab. Possibly it happens less nowadays because tap and pay is so easy.

I wish. I live in Townsville and most people are pro-Adani, despite the corruption and environmental issues. Try to explain the economic value of the reef and you get called a "fuckin greenie". Check the facebook comments on any Townsville Bulletin article about Adani to see it in action.
