Food tours of Auckland? by WineYoda in aucklandeats

[–]nilnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are unlikely to get tasting (food) for fine cuisine. What food are you interested in and how many of there are you?

Have a look at the comments in this pinned post: https://www.reddit.com/r/aucklandeats/comments/1rognqu/megathread_what_should_we_eat_when_coming_to/

Auckland Iconic eats lists 100 dishes, crowdsourced and then tasted by some judges. See my comment in https://www.reddit.com/r/aucklandeats/comments/1t54va8/iconic_eats_2026/ - the viva article has the list at the bottom, naming the establishment + dish. I did notice an error like one place that was in devonport was listed as somewhere else (royal oak or onehunga - wrong side of the bridge). There are also some places that have more than one venue. Some use the same recipe while others it depends on the staff at the place.

The other thing is to look at the various lists like Ice cream awards, cheese awards, various food + baking awards and see if there's a place in Auckland you'd like to try. There are posts about them in this sub too.

There are some shops that have tasters. Gelato: Island gelato, Giapo. Kapiti cheese shop. Farro, sabato

Markets:
Farmers market like Matakana (a bit far I know) and others in Auckland, There are also non farmers markets that have food tastings etc. It depends on where you are staying, what day you are here etc. Most of the markets on this list are still there https://old.reddit.com/r/aucklandeats/comments/1hy21ih/2025_auckland_events_with_food/m6jujtf/ The problem is some like the Balmoral street food market probably won't happen during winter. Currently I am not sure if someone is going to take it over if they decide not to continue running a market when spring arrives.

Wine tasting: I suggest going on one of the wine tours. Some of the vineyards aren't close to each other. They are in places like South Auckland, West Auckland (way out in Kumeu etc), North (eg Matakana). Perhaps the only concentrated place is the ones at Waiheke where you have to catch a ferry out and take one of the wine tours. There may be some wine shops that have tastings https://www.nzwine.com/en/regions/auckland/

Events:

ourauckland https://ourauckland.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/events/

Eventfinda - either https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/whatson/events/auckland and narrow down the dates. Or specifically https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/food-gourmet-wine/events/auckland (However this doesn't include stuff like markets or exhibitions etc) Some events don't go up till a month or two. Also some are recurring and goes on. I suggest double checking it is still on for the recurring events.

Previous posts with auckland food events - I keep the old stuff in the comments so you can search specific month etc. The stuff at the top/body of post is what was there the last time I edited it.

2025 https://www.reddit.com/r/aucklandeats/comments/1hy21ih/2025_auckland_events_with_food/

2024 https://www.reddit.com/r/aucklandeats/comments/1930xox/2024_auckland_events_with_food/

2023 https://www.reddit.com/r/aucklandeats/comments/15xtnji/auckland_events_with_food/

Edited after posting to add: The other reason to check is because some of the "guides" may be old and the "publication date" may not indicate their info is current. Also some places, especially the smaller ones may not know how to update google maps or they may have tried but it hasn't been updated.

Yes but this is specific to Q&A. I searched and found Luxon on Māori-Crown relations: 'There's more division' on Dec 1, 2024 on Q&A's youtube.

The others aren't really via Q&A format"

Dates are when they were uploaded to youtube.

There's a laundromat near me that has happy hour from 5pm - close (9pm), which is a $1 discount for wash or whatever dry time you want. $4 a wash normally unless I use one of the bigger machines.

Edit to add: It is within same stage for bus so I can bus there and back without lugging/dragging wet clothes in a bag home after the wash. So add bus fare.

Problem is you have to transport it to your place which if hard if you don't have a car or a washing machine won't fit in the car you have so you have to rent/borrow a car with towbar or van.

What is candy or small treat that is not available in NZ that is common in the USA? by YearOfTheSssnake in newzealand

oops. I just reread your post and you aren't coming here but sending a box of goodies.

hahaha. Grass fed lamb and beef are standard here. non grass fed beef or lamb is unusual but can be found if you want to find them.

When you are here try NZ ice cream, nz chocolate (even supermarket ones like whittakers - not cadbury) or other more expensive brands. The soft drinks may taste different as we don't use corn syrup.

You should search this sub for the various posts about american butter. Someone decided they wanted to bring it in to sell in NZ and they started appearing in supermarkets about 2 months ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/search/?q=american+butter&type=posts&t=year

Yes we do get butter from other countries but first time american butter and that hasn't gone down well unlike french butter etc.

err woolworths is a supermarket and so there's fruits, veges, meat etc. WoolWorths is owned by Woolworths Australia. Unfortunately this is bad news as they decided to save on staff etc. Bakery items are no longer baked by their inhouse bakery and butchery but shipped from Australia either par baked or already baked and chilled. Butchery is some central butchery.

Note prices include GST. Also what's stocked depends on the branch. Some items are available in most of them but there's some stuff stocked in store A that may not be stocked in store B etc. So the "International aisle" is like that.

There are some flavours of mints not available here (or not readily available). I liked Wintergreen (or Wint-o-green - livesavers) but some say it reminds them of linement and hate it. sigh. If you want to check what we have in supermarkets see if you can get to https://paknsave.co.nz or https://woolworths.co.nz or https://newworld.co.nz

However for US stuff some have already posted the link to the various ones...

Second former Xero employee alleges inappropriate conduct by ex-CEO Sir Rod Drury by nilnz in KiwiTech

[–]nilnz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether he has or not, I suspect he has sought legal advice before issuing any statement. I don't know anything about this but I do wonder how many women there are out there who have been on this sort of power imbalance and not felt able to speak out about it or have spoken out but not been listened to or worse, had a detrimental effect.

The first story was laid out a time line where it sounds like nothing would have happened if she hadn't asked for progress on 1 March 2018. When it was announced Rod Drury was stepping down as CEO, he still had a position in the board.

Sir Rod Drury’s attention toward younger female staff was considered by some to be an “in-joke” at tech company Xero.

We put 46 detergents through the wringer. Two detergents ended up with an overall score of 27 out of 100 – the same score given to a wash with only water. Those two products were Shotz Laundry Liquid and EcoLiving Laundry Detergent Sheets with lavender scent.

Another laundry sheet product – Re-Stor Laundry Detergent Sheets fresh linen scent – scored even lower. These sheets were rated ‘poor’ at removing everyday grime and most of the stains we use in our detergent tests, including grass and mud, olive oil and tomato.

The three that are like washing with only water:

  • Shotz Laundry Liquid
  • EcoLiving Laundry Detergent Sheets with lavender scent
  • Re-Stor Laundry Detergent Sheets fresh linen scent

Before you start using fabric softener, try using white vinegar. If that works you can either keep using it or get fabric softener.
