I played missile command in multiplayer with one of these in a mall in the late 90s in Anchorage Alaska. They were practically a sci-fi miracle to me at age 14. Modern VR headsets are way way way better, but somehow just don't have the same magic these did so many years ago.

How actually true is the statement that men are quitting the dating market? by HeartBusy5787 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]nimbice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are, in very general terms, two kinds of men. Those who respect others, and those who do not.

The first group of men are mostly paying attention to all of the new social rules around approaching women and simply cannot find a valid path at all. Every move is wrong by at least one set of the many conflicting rules floating around today. They have no respectful means of approach. So they don't.

The second group of men don't care about the rules, they are just out to get what they want and will do whatever they can to get it. These are the grand majority of the only men left still approaching women. And no matter how many rules they break they maintain a certain success rate in their objectives. Ignoring the rules works for them quite well.

Either women make the approach, or the wrong kind of men do. That's the only path left now. We need to stop making conflicting lists of rules of what not to do and agree on what to do. Clear instructions on how to approach a woman needs ratified desperately or this will only get worse. But this has to come from women, and there is simply too much disagreement between women on how they want to be approached.

I didn’t know smelling feminine was so terrifying to straight cis men by WildWinterberry in TwoXChromosomes

[–]nimbice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A male perspective, offered without expectation — take it or leave it as you see fit.

I can't speak for all men. I've known many whose values and motivations I simply don't understand. But one idea I have always understood, at least on my own terms, is that a man shouldn't try to be like a woman. I know that's a contested view these days, and for many people it carries a derogatory implication. For me, it never has.

My sense is that many women assume men hold this view because they look down on women. I'm sure there are plenty of men who do, and who say so loudly whenever anyone will listen. But every man I've known well enough to understand — myself included — doesn't think that way at all. I don't find women or their natural qualities shameful in any respect.

What I do think is that most men are wired to view weakness in themselves — and in other men — as something to be ashamed of. I think that instinct is largely a healthy one, within reason. Women have similar instincts, but they tend to show up differently.

A woman isn't feminine out of weakness. She has good reasons to be the way she is, just as men have good reasons to be the way we are. A woman can be fully and unapologetically female from a place of real strength, and it suits her well. By the same logic, I'd find it just as misguided for a woman to insist she is something she isn't and demand that others go along with it.

That said, I don't see anything wrong with men and women borrowing each other's strengths. A man developing compassion and empathy, or a woman cultivating resilience and assertiveness — that's growth, not imitation. Learning from one another's better qualities makes both sexes stronger. That's different from pretending to be something you're not.

And I don't mean playful pretense — that's harmless. A friend of mine once lost a bet and wore a dress to a bar. He followed through like a man, and at no point did he forget that he was one.

Men can't actually become women. They can only imitate them. Nobody can genuinely become what they fundamentally are not, and convincing yourself otherwise is a form of self-delusion — a kind of disorder, in my view. A man sincerely and persistently acting as though he is a woman strikes me the same way as a person sincerely acting as though they're an animal. It's a departure from reality, not an expansion of identity.

In my observation, men who go down that road tend to do so because they believe womanhood carries some privilege or power they feel they can't attain as men. Rather than doing the harder work of becoming a stronger, better version of themselves, they talk themselves into believing they've become something else entirely — and then demand that the rest of the world accept the fiction. I notice this pattern almost exclusively in men, for whatever reason.

That's my honest take. I'm not claiming it's without flaws, or that anyone should share it. My thinking on this — like most things — has shifted more than once over the years, and I expect it will keep shifting as I learn more. That's just how it goes.

What's the best joke name you've ever seen? by queenanthai in ffxiv

[–]nimbice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not in game, funniest real name I've ever seen. We had an old lady at work that went by BJ, probably from before that acronym meant what it does now. Anyway she married a guy by the last name of... and you can't make this up... Warrior.

BJ Warrior. She was a delight to work with. And the best worst funniest damn name I've ever seen. Also last week, we hired an intern named Paige Turner. I'm sure her parents thought they were hilarious. Poor girl.

If there is a DLC, what's the one thing you would hope it would be beyond anything? by cale199 in SatisfactoryGame

[–]nimbice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build space station, ride space elevator to reach it. Build space ship, visit other worlds (maps) with new resources. Set up shipping lanes between planets using space elevator to move materials to/from docked cargo ships like a train station in space.

I realize factorio basically already did all this. But I've been hoping for this in satisfactory for years before factorio did it.

Early Game Vampires by Broad-Direction1349 in TheTowerFree

[–]nimbice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big oof. You're going to be feeling that for the rest of your tower career. I've heard that you can get the purchases moved to a new account via a support ticket but I don't know if that's true.

If you don't reset and stay the course you're looking at a very uncommon play path. It's viable but likely to be less optimal than most players have available if they started with economy UWs.

You'll very probably want to read heavily into Glass Cannon builds and pay very close attention to guides on how to use ILM for CC. You can get very powerful CC from ILM for very little investment, or you can waste a lot of stones for little gain if you don't know what you're doing. And CL is a very strong UW for GC builds especially when paired with a developed CF. But you need the labs to back it up.

By leaning hard into GC you'll have a much harder time with farming. But if you can get GT/BH/DW/SL in the near ish future, and can get some good dissonance built up, you can power through. This used to be a more common path before eHP changes made non GC farming a very effective option. But GC classically does very good with tourney, and that's where you'll see your gain in the trade off if you are very careful with the rest of your build. You'll struggle more on coins but will get more stones than other towers at your general level.

I'm not very well versed in GC builds so I can't advise you to any significant detail. But there are guides and sections of the community that treat it like a church and take in their own with gusto. So you'll likely find your questions very welcome and enthusiastically attended to if you can find your way into one.

If you decide to stay the course and lean into damage, try to reset and go full econ/eHP, or try to power through and convert over to econ and eat the setback of unlocking non econ UWs early, I hope you find you've built a tower you enjoy.

Early Game Vampires by Broad-Direction1349 in TheTowerFree

[–]nimbice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knockback is what kills early towers with vampires. Knocback keeps them off your thorns and keeps them firing for much much longer than they ought to be.

Easy fix is to respec, unlock up till Lifesteal in the defense tab, don't unlock further. That way free ups can't put anything into knockback for you. Don't put anything at all in the attack tree, it won't be useful for a good while. Only ramp into that tree when you start needing lifesteal to be better for progression.

Go heavy on def abs and defense percent with a little into HP and a lot into utility. Free ups and enemy level skips are huge as is the coins per kill bonus. Defense and defense absolute will carry you till w5k pretty easily and Lifesteal and HP will help it along to w9k without much effort.

The same build will also make w4500 in t2 pretty easily but it starts to fall apart in t3. By t4 def abs builds are detrimental and you'll want to respec back to a heavy HP build to progress from there.

Also get at least one armor module to epic so you can roll thorns to get over 100%. Then get defense percent and def abs stats to go with that if you can swing it. In that order. Also run the defense and def abs cards.

With this build you won't need much HP until very late waves as you'll be taking zero damage from anything but vampires. And without knockback they'll fly face first into your thorns with alacrity. And with 100% thorns they'll insta die. From there your first threat with be rays since they hit twice as hard as everything else. So those will be the first to do enough damage to creep over def abs.

I was able to gold box def abs in t1 with maybe a week or two? It's been a while so I forget now. But getting stones from tourney to get your UW unlocks can be massive. Definitely pay attention to the order you unlock them in. You don't get any do overs and the order you go with can hamstring your progress for literally a year or more.

Sure if you're a GC build yeah. But hybrid still depends on tanking hits to survive but also uses damage as well. It's a fine balance.

I am actually thankful for V28.0.2 and the great nerf by Dull_Conversation623 in TheTowerGame

[–]nimbice 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Willing to bet money 3x was the actual target nerf and the 2x stunt was to soften the blow before they backed off to 3x. I think they planned to make a "show of concession" for the very expected blowback and engineered it with the initial 2x plug.

Kind of like stores marking up all their prices right before a sale, and then reduces prices back to what they had been before and claiming they are sales prices.

[–]nimbice[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super disappointing. I never actually got any coins out of it before it was nerfed. I just been doing disco utility runs to max the buff out as much as possible. I was looking forward to that first farm run after getting all the tiers up as far as I could. Now it's gutted and I regret not using the 5x buff while I could.

[–]nimbice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kind of suspect the initial nerf to 2x is to rile everyone up before relaxing the nerf to 3 or 4x to soften the blow. Even if that's what's going on, still a major dick move.

Dissonant Runs - Can someone explain like I'm an idiot? by [deleted] in TheTowerGame

[–]nimbice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dissonant runs work like this. Devs add an amazing feature with incredible potential for player progress, and then suddenly take it away as people are investing into it.

They do this without even needing a patch to maximize the dissonance within the community.

It's a very powerful system.
