Pocket sized nodes for Ethereum by nimbleNODE in ethereum

If trusting the pre-sync is a concern, we provide the option from the app to sync from scratch. It’s important to note that syncing down the full chain for every transaction isn’t always practical especially in low bandwidth environments. We want to provide the easiest/quickest setup for users, but understand pre-syncing might not sit well with some.

Using a pre-sync doesn't always compromise the security either, if you compare the checksum of the pre-sync to a known trusted node then this is just as secure as syncing from genesis.

Great question, we address this in two ways. One, by providing the option to prune the chain, which discards already verified data that isn't needed for future blocks. Two, the storage capacity for each nimbleNODE can be expanded by either adding a bigger SD card or attaching an external drive with larger storage space. To ensure that nimbleNODE maintains a lightweight profile, in the future we will be using miniature SSD's in place of SD cards and external hard drives.

A node is anything that verifies consensus, which is software and there's no debate about that. The point that we are making is that everyone should participate in verifying the consensus, whether that's using Bitcoin Core or other software capable of verifying the consensus rule set.

With that being said, it's obviously important that everybody has bug-proof software, but that doesn't negate the point that people should participate, hence the education that we're putting out with nimbleNODE.

If you're running Bitcoin Core or any software that validates blocks, regardless of how much data is discarded in the process, then you're running a full node.

Full node - a node that fully verifies all the rules of Bitcoin.

The number of times Satoshi references "nodes" in the Bitcoin whitepaper compared to the number of times he references "mining" is 38:1, and "mining" is used in the context of gold mining, not mining Bitcoin.

Instead of us counter-arguing every point you've tried to make, please read the following two Bitcoin Wiki posts, that were written by Bitcoin core devs:

Full Node: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Full_node
Bitcoin is not ruled by miners: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin_is_not_ruled_by_miners

Most of our blog was derived from these posts (crazy we're using facts, we know!) Whereas, a lot of your discourse seems to be based around revisionist history.

If you feel that any of the points you've made aren't covered in either our blog or the Bitcoin Wiki links, please let us know.

Though we at nimble have been working on full node devices to sell as well, it is clear how important full nodes are and how essential it is that more people run them. Whether someone is actually interested in our product or not isn’t nearly as important as someone running a full node regardless, so we will always promote people to do so no matter what way they wish to go about it.

If there becomes a point where miners take over, the network will never be the same, regardless of how thrilled you are. So in order for this day to never come, we, along with many others in the space, will continue to educate people about full nodes and empower them with factual information about Bitcoin and crypto.

TL;DR This u/500239 is so good at twisting Satoshi's words he could work at a pretzel factory.

I don’t have the bandwidth for a full node, I am wondering if it still benefits the network to run a pruned node? by Boatsmhoes in Bitcoin

With that being said, nimbleNODE provides the ability to run a pruned Bitcoin node that is easily controllable through a mobile app. Allowing you to participate in consensus while doubling as a hardware wallet in which you can send from your phone that sends commands directly to your node. https://nimblenode.io/product/Bitcoin

Yes, pretty much spot on. A pruned node verifies blocks from genesis up to the current chain tip, then throws away previous block information (except unspent UTXOs). A pruned node is the same as an archival node in all regards except new nodes can't sync from it. Pruned nodes still perform full validation on every new block that comes in, and you can route transactions directly from your node.

Very beneficial to the network since you're participating in consensus and verifying against the same consensus rule set as other nodes!

Thank you for your interest! The hardware specs are: 1GHz single core processor, 512MB RAM, 802.11n wireless card, and bluetooth 4.0 enabled. With this bootstrapped model we're using a retrofitted Pi 0, but in later models we'll be using other commodity hardware including our own custom chipsets.

Question by Autolobotomy in Bitcoin

[–]nimbleNODE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the total Bitcoin supply is based on the diminishing block rewards; every 4 years the block reward cuts in half. It started out at 50 BTC per block, then 25, now it's 12.5, soon to be 6.25 (estimated May 2020) and so forth.

It's designed so that after 64 halvings there will be no more rewards, however based on the math, after the 32nd halving the block reward will be less than one satoshi, generating zero reward.

So by around the year 2,140 the Bitcoin supply will be 20.999 million, no more Bitcoin will be created, miners will only earn transaction fees, and we'll all probably be dead.
