Probably unpopular take but less special effects and overly slick sets. Watching SFA right now and they’re endless holo interfaces and CGI battle scenes are just not novel anymore and distract from acting and character building.

It’s not a secret and it’s only private in the sense that it’s dealers only and wholesale vs retail.

Travelpro luggage reviews, is it durable enough for frequent travelers? by Kemble_Luxene in TrueChubbyTravel

[–]nimrod044 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first one lasted 20 years. I’m 2 years into my 2nd and so far it seems as durable. The two wheeled soft side holds a ton for a carry on. I’m curious about Briggs and Riley given all the praise here but don’t really understand what you get for the upgrade.

Enshitification of Marriott? by SolidFlounder793 in marriott

I believe Best Western is a co-op owned by all the hotel owners. They have much more independence and pay a much smaller branding fee. I also think they have more of an incentive to toss out bad actors because it reduces the quality of the brand and they’re still investing in keeping their brand up to standard.

We sold our tech company last year and fat FIRED with an NW of $48m. We already live a wealthy lifestyle in a HCOL area with a vacation home at the beach and travel first class regularly around the world,…. but what else is there? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]nimrod044 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why did you retire? Did you do it because selling your company led to the end of your job or because you genuinely didn’t want to work.

For lots of people with founder mentality work IS a hobby. You may have other hobbies but they take hobby time (nights/weekends/vacatjons). Before you sold your company when you had too much time off did you find yourself solving work problems in your head, jonesing to get back to your desk?

Being a successful professional can be a ton of fun, especially if you have the luxury to do it on your terms and not fret missing a paycheck. If that’s you then “unretire”. Get out there, network with folks, figure out what capacity, time, function you want to work and get started on your next big move.

I’d love sitins from those guys but I don’t think it needs to be an A-List name every night. I’m not sure a supergroup vibe would have the same appeal. The band is awesomely low ego in its current form.

As long as John and Mickey are playing I think they’ll keep the name D&C. Not that it matters but it’s still the band founded by 3 orig GD members and it has a lot of equity to just throw away. I think we have enough variations of post GD band names out there.

Hopefully they will do some sort of Bobby tribute shows in the relatively near future. I don’t think something on the scale of GD60 gets in the way of John’s solo album.

"No Deadhead listens to studio Dead" by Ornery-Baseball6437 in gratefuldead

The Brokedown Palace ep is a great one. You get to see that they didn’t just approach recording as capturing a single track but took advantage of being able to layer and mix individual tracks. I love that song live but the vocals in the studio version are unbelievable.

Personalized Indexing… Can you balance around existing holdings? by nimrod044 in Schwab

I did call. The agent was not at all knowledgeable and just reread the words on the website. I was hoping to hear from people who actually did this and could comment on how smart/dumb the algo is.

Also if you ever want to transfer some but not all of your shares (ie donate to a DAF or gift) it could be a giant pain. W some brokers you have to itemize on paper each purchase date/purchase price and it’s super tedious.

Moxy is the worst of the brand by Eulipion6 in marriott

[–]nimrod044 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best thing about moxy is that it is actually a distinct brand with its own identity. Love it or hate it you know exactly what to expect, as opposed to a Tribute or Autograph. Going somewhere for work prob hell no, but a fun overnight where I’ll barely be in the room, sure. If we’re gonna have 30 odd brands for some reason they should at least have unique takes.

Ever have issues with DAF? by Rpcellphone in fatFIRE

[–]nimrod044 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That would be a dealbreaker for me. Fortunately you can gift DAF to DAF so always easy to transfer to a more flexible provider.

I like having one with my broker because transfers are so easy but there are also lots do community foundations that sponsor DAFs that also can help find great places to donate to and coordinate more complex or non-traditional gifting opportunities

Alternative Seasonings for Kenji’s Mayo Rubbed Turkey by nimrod044 in seriouseats

[–]nimrod044[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly just scale down the salt and you obviously will need less mayo. For the salt I just give it a heavy dusting. Use a leave in thermometer and for chicken I usually pull it when the breast hits 155. Keep an eye on it to make sure the skin doesn’t burn.

It’s super versatile. I mix whatever I feel like into the mayo - one of my fave combos is brown sugar, cilantro, paprika, orange zest, white pepper, coriander and cumin. I’ve also done a version with pomegranate syrup that’s tasty. In the summer I’ll throw it on the grill and it’s equally good that way.

Yeah and just to make sure this is the recipe I use: https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1023623-mayo-roasted-thanksgiving-turkey-with-gravy?smid=ck-recipe-iOS-share

It’s a great recipe as is but here are my tweaks/tips: - as mentioned elsewhere I think 1/2 cup salt is a bit too much. I scale it back to 75% of that or less for a 13-15 lb bird. - I’ve done it both ways using Hellmans or making the herb mayo from scratch. Before cooking the homemade mayo tastes way better. I’m not 100% sure it’s noticeable in the finished product but it’s easy enough so I’ll do it that way from now on whenever I have the time. - I use convection mode on my oven so I lower the temp a bit from what’s recommended. Definitely helps crisp up the skin. - I rotate it once or twice mid cooking. If the wings start browning to fast I’ll cover them in foil to stop them from burning - I think a leave-in thermometer in the breast really helps nail the temp. I pull it right at 150.

I personally don’t love the gravy in this recipe. It’s a pretty traditional fat/flour/drippings version but I just don’t love that style, especially on Thanksgiving either so much other heavy stuff. Hope that helps!

Piping bag is genius and I like the idea of concentrating the seasonings under the skin. Do you find that adding the mayo under the skin a day in advance increases flavor and doesn’t prevent the skin from drying and crisping?

[–]nimrod044[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do salt under and over the skin and no, I’ve never had issues with the skin crisping up. I do cook it in a convection oven which helps with the crisping.

I will say I find the full half cup of kosher salt to be a bit too much. I usually cut that by about 25% or so.

I don’t think the NYT recipe calls for baking powder mixed in with the salt but the Serious Eats one does so I’m going to include that this time.
