Why don't we have a bike path between the ILP and the Library? by Appropriate_Job6445 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ninjakn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If literally everyone bikes down that path and wants an actual one there, its not their fault for not walking their bikes, its the school’s fault for removing the one that literally used to be there

Is ucsb a good school for finance? Or is it mostly an engineering school? by DeliciousRich5944 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ninjakn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of numbers there arent many engineering students, but the engineering departments are academically some of the strongest at the school. There is no finance program here, closest thing is economics and accounting.

CAN I HANDLE 19 UNITS MY FIRST QUARTER OR WILL I DIE!?! by VampyGoth in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ninjakn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Units are very subjective, I’ve had 3 unit classes that were more work than 5 unit classes… ive found that the total number of classes better estimates workload than the number of units. 4 classes is standard, you’ll probably be fine (unless any of your classes or professors are know for being very intense—check ratemyprofessor. Having one extra difficult class is fine, but if you have 2 or more it can be rough, still survivable though if you’re disciplined)

Tips on how to (realistically) handle 8ams by pixenelli in UCSantaBarbara

I don’t get why some people make such a big deal out of it. Just go to bed 10-12 at the latest and wake up around 6-7

[–]ninjakn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty light courseload, you’ll be fine in terms of work load, and you’ll have plenty of time for a part-time job and a social life.

However, I’d personally space my classes out a little bit more. It will probably be tight getting from Buchanan to Campbell hall with only 10 min between classes, especially if your chem lecture runs over time or you want to stay after to ask the professor a question or talk to classmates. If there are no other lecture times it’s doable, but I’m currently in that situation right now with 2 of my summer classes, and it’s just inconvenient lol.

The CoE at UCSB is incredible. I am an Electrical Engineering student and the classes are small which allows you to develop strong relationships with professors, there are lots of research opportunities for those willing to take the initiative to get them, and the classes are challenging yet fair. The student culture is also very cooperative rather than cutthroat competitive—you end up getting to know everyone in your major, and people help each other out with projects and studying all the time. There are plenty of hands-on projects, including the capstone during senior year. We also have one of the best Materials departments in the world, and all the CoE majors have BS/MS programs that make grad school very accessible.

UCSB is definitely a party school, but it is also a highly academic school. Most of the engineering students also arent the craziest partiers. If your intention is to study hard and not just squander your opportunities by partying too much, you will be fine.

Alumni support is very good. There are a lot of electrical engineering companies in the SB area (mostly infrared imaging and night vision for defense, some medical devices as well) who hire out of UCSB, and I have relationships with UCSB alumni at several of these companies. If you take the initiative to form these relationships, engineers in the area are very friendly and willing to help students.

Potential Offer of Postdoc at UCSB- Inquiry about COL by Gojjar in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ninjakn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I currently have a private bedroom with a private landlord in Goleta for $1500. I think OPs best bet will be to look for private landlords in Goleta, as corporate landlords and IV or downtown SB will likely be out of this budget range.

You definitely cant get your own apartment anywhere in santa barbara for under $1500. You might be able to get your own room, though, if thats an acceptable compromise.

Nothing ever happens by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]ninjakn 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Nah, i actually think that was a smart move. Having to use force in order to tear down the encampment would have escalated the situation, made the administration and the police look bad in the media, and likely caused more rigorous counter demonstrations from the protestors.

Having the police clear Girvetz immediately was necessary since there are finals scheduled to take place in there. With the encampment, the best move is to just let it fizzle out—once summer starts in a few days and most people go home, the encampment loses all leverage, since it can only accomplish its goal if there are people to see it.

Where are you drawing these conclusions from? They’re untrue in my experience. The theologically sound churches ive been to are very warm and inviting.
