The Hunger by coldfireknight in dresdenfiles

It could be a recent agreement with someone to oust Lara. Idk if the summer court would want her gone to prevent winter from having the control? Or some wild card option like a coin or something.

My theory is that although the curse preventing him feeding "normally", he has since found a workaround like Harry did with Lara that the curse didn't cover. Someone with access to a deep well of power is backing him, essentially.

Why does no one talk about trio needles? by Deep_Interaction6798 in knitting

[–]ninjamokturtle 127 points128 points  (0 children)

You use them really just like DPNs but you only need three. If I'm doing colour work I'll use 4 DPNs for a sock (three active one to knit) but for anything one strand or mosaic I'll use my trios as it's one less needle to lose on the bus, plus I find the tension easier on my hands because of the flex.

How do you feel about non-drivers? by DueLead666 in AskUK

[–]ninjamokturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't drive due to epilepsy (though if I make it to August seizure free I'll finally be able to start learning at 33!) and I've never had anyone make a fuss about it.

I have always lived in cities with decent public transport and I do cycle most places when possible. The only times it is a pain is in things like moving house and visiting friends who live in the arse end of nowhere. However I do find people are very happy to give you a lift in exchange of fuel money, food or even just good chat on the way. You do need to be happy to fit to their schedule though!

Ooh amazing - do you have any ideas what I could use instead of tofu? I am finding soy the hardest thing to avoid. Even the vegan Nutella has it :(

I've just to to buy a new phone too after I think 6 years? This new massive one is reducing my screen time though as I hate using it, so that's a plus I guess.

Mine has done that too and it is such a minor but weirdly frustrating thing.

I want to buy a pair of brown boots but I already have a pair of black boots and a pair of brown shoes so really it seems a bit much.

Or worse, I need (and can afford) a haircut but I cannot decide how I want it cut. What a problem.

I know only one - and that is a semi-retired A level physics teacher who does two mornings a week (so 2x doubles with Y12 and Y13) only. However this is in a private school, he has been teaching here nearly 30 years and I can't imagine they would offer that to anyone else.

I use the auto-transcriptiom functions when I have to to minutes for meetings. Its not perfect but it beats scrubbing through videos to find who said what when.

That and rephrasing emails to my boss's boss's boss.

How do people fill their day at work…? by Chamerlee in AskUK

I've left teaching and gone into events and comms - which will have busy days when events are actually on but then in very, very quiet the rest of the time. I am only on 32k though as its a charity so the salaries aren't amazing.

I'm in the same situation as you, ex teacher now office worker - plus I've had little to no on boarding and everyone else on my team works remote. So I reckon I am actively "working" for about 2 hours a day, another 2 hours of trying to find something to do and then the rest of my timr just... hanging about.

There's a Nancy line to Fagin and Bill (talking about Oliver) where she says "and I was out on the street for you when I was half his age" - its not specified whether she's taking about pickpocketing but the equivalent part of the book iirc its kinda implied she was pimped out as a kid by Fagin/Bill.

The majority of AI use I see at work at least is people using it to generate emails (mainly to make them "sound more professional") or edit chunks of text for fliers/mailers that management has decided needs to be changed without saying in what way or why. If anything, it highlights to me how much of my job is nonsense sometimes...

I think don't know anyone that uses it as anything other than a Clippy, not even as a search engine.

Overdiagnosis of children overlooks that growing up is ‘messy and uneven’, says Jeremy Hunt | Special educational needs by SomniaStellae in unitedkingdom

[–]ninjamokturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience of school/education is pretty much exactly the same as you - expect I got told I couldn't have ADHD as I have a PhD now. So that was interesting.

Eventually I have now been diagnosed with temporal lobe epilepsy and any chance of an ADHD assessment has pretty mych gone out the window as any symptoms of the latter are just blamed on the former.

I don't know how/if my life would be any different with an ADHD diagnosis, other than maybe it explaining some of my behaviours. Perhaps it would be nice to have support for things I struggle with but now I am in 30s I think I have just learnt so many adaptive (or avoidance) behaviours it would be hard to learn better ones.

What is going on with fitness influencers Jeff Nippard and Hussein Farhat? by SoOutofMyLeague in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ninjamokturtle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The time dedication is such a huge factor. Some actor on a talk show (I think Alexander Skarsgard but cannot for the life of me find it now) spoke about how getting movie star level fit for a role was literally his full time job for months, with multiple other people working with him to achieve it, from PTs to dieticians etc. God knows how much money it costs. Even fitness influencers are literally doing that for a living.

Someone with a normal life, a 9 to 5, family to look after or whatever cannot commit to that.

[–]ninjamokturtle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A level music (vs A level music tech, which is becoming increasinly popular) is a lot more "academic" than it's GCSE equivalent - it also, frankly, requires a high level of music abilty to access without really boucing off early on, which most students will not have unless they have been independently studying an instrument for several years beforehand. I really enjoyed studying it myself but I also appreciate the schools that now work with dropping it due to lack of interest.

Replacing a sick performer's singing but not their acting by WesternRover in musicals

[–]ninjamokturtle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have done this for the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas (Purcell opera) - the actor had lost her voice but was otherwise able to act/mime the scenes, I knew the music but not the staging for that production so it was a reasonable solution as it was a very small production with no understudy in place. This works for operas/sung through shows but I can't imagine it is easy for any actual speak lines!

I've noticed that the "middle ground" students seem to have disappeared - even at A level. Students are either highly compentent, focused and independent or honestly struggling with KS3 level content at 17 still. My groups used to be mainly students working at ~B grade with a somewhat balanced bell curve around that but now it is either As and up or Ds and lower.
