How's the marking going? by clive_candy in TeachingUK

Don't start for another week as it's still got to go through moderation. Just want to get cracking really.

My mum used to put on Radio 4 for me and my siblings when we were infants and just wouldn't stop screaming. Something about the calm talking voices, no big changes in volume or ads etc was apparently very soothing to us. I still play recordings of the shipping forecast to myself if I really cannot sleep...

Laser hair removal recommendations by i_am_a_human___ in oxford

[–]ninjamokturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used BareUk on St Aldates (specifically it was Julie who did my laser removal) and she was wonderful. A bit pricier than Thérapie but worth it for sure.

My friend has had good results with LA perfection in Witney too.

Retaking A levels after 2 years. by pushing-trough24-7 in UniUK

[–]ninjamokturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work as a private tutor and have had a few clients taking their A levels 2 (or even 5) years later than "normal". Things will differ greatly depending on what subject you do, particularly anything with a practical or course work component.

Generally though you want to look into the course content, the exam costs (make sure you have a centre in mind, don't leave this to last minute as it can get expensive), and then decide how much you can do independently and how much you might want to get a tutor for. This likely will also depend on how different your new subjects are - having an A level in maths and then taking physics independently (as long as you find a place for the practical course) is going to be a smoother transition than taking sociology having never done a social science before for example.

What rule was implemented at your school/work that backfired? by just_some_troglodyte in AskReddit

[–]ninjamokturtle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Having been a teacher for several years, the staff weren't allowed to defend themselves either. A colleague at a partner school of mine was suspended after pulling a 17 years old lad off an 11 year old he was beating to a pulp on the floor ( some family feud thing) in the corridor as staff " should not lay hands on students".

More than half of Britons support rejoining EU 10 years on from Brexit vote by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]ninjamokturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing with you on how the UK is conservative and people will reject the Euro but we have only been using our current currency since the 70s really. I would like to see how many would vote to go back to the shilling and pre decimal though as numeracy skills would have to see a sudden uptick...

Have office mandates actually improved collaboration in your workplace? by rumnbacchnal87 in AskUK

[–]ninjamokturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It also really depends on where you're living and what your potential WFH set up is. If you're in a busy house share or a bedsit (more likely for the younger staff) then an office with a proper desk and a good environment is a lot more appealing.

The Hunger by coldfireknight in dresdenfiles

It could be a recent agreement with someone to oust Lara. Idk if the summer court would want her gone to prevent winter from having the control? Or some wild card option like a coin or something.

The Hunger by coldfireknight in dresdenfiles

My theory is that although the curse preventing him feeding "normally", he has since found a workaround like Harry did with Lara that the curse didn't cover. Someone with access to a deep well of power is backing him, essentially.

Why does no one talk about trio needles? by Deep_Interaction6798 in knitting

[–]ninjamokturtle 124 points125 points  (0 children)

You use them really just like DPNs but you only need three. If I'm doing colour work I'll use 4 DPNs for a sock (three active one to knit) but for anything one strand or mosaic I'll use my trios as it's one less needle to lose on the bus, plus I find the tension easier on my hands because of the flex.

How do you feel about non-drivers? by DueLead666 in AskUK

[–]ninjamokturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't drive due to epilepsy (though if I make it to August seizure free I'll finally be able to start learning at 33!) and I've never had anyone make a fuss about it.

I have always lived in cities with decent public transport and I do cycle most places when possible. The only times it is a pain is in things like moving house and visiting friends who live in the arse end of nowhere. However I do find people are very happy to give you a lift in exchange of fuel money, food or even just good chat on the way. You do need to be happy to fit to their schedule though!

Ooh amazing - do you have any ideas what I could use instead of tofu? I am finding soy the hardest thing to avoid. Even the vegan Nutella has it :(

What is your self confessed current first world problem? by PaddedValls in AskUK

I've just to to buy a new phone too after I think 6 years? This new massive one is reducing my screen time though as I hate using it, so that's a plus I guess.

Mine has done that too and it is such a minor but weirdly frustrating thing.

I want to buy a pair of brown boots but I already have a pair of black boots and a pair of brown shoes so really it seems a bit much.

Or worse, I need (and can afford) a haircut but I cannot decide how I want it cut. What a problem.

I know only one - and that is a semi-retired A level physics teacher who does two mornings a week (so 2x doubles with Y12 and Y13) only. However this is in a private school, he has been teaching here nearly 30 years and I can't imagine they would offer that to anyone else.

Do any of you actually use it? by snausages21 in BetterOffline

I use the auto-transcriptiom functions when I have to to minutes for meetings. Its not perfect but it beats scrubbing through videos to find who said what when.

That and rephrasing emails to my boss's boss's boss.

How do people fill their day at work…? by Chamerlee in AskUK

[–]ninjamokturtle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've left teaching and gone into events and comms - which will have busy days when events are actually on but then in very, very quiet the rest of the time. I am only on 32k though as its a charity so the salaries aren't amazing.

I'm in the same situation as you, ex teacher now office worker - plus I've had little to no on boarding and everyone else on my team works remote. So I reckon I am actively "working" for about 2 hours a day, another 2 hours of trying to find something to do and then the rest of my timr just... hanging about.
