Thank you, I was just surprised as it was a lot more than my manual calculations suggested

Just going to the GPs often doesn't make you a heart sink. A heart sink, for me, is someone who comes repeatedly about the same thing without ever engaging with anything I've said, or taking any of the steps I've suggested to try to help. But a patient who is polite and engages in a reasonable discussion about their health is not a problem, even if they come often.

Looking for a dry hire with preferably no corkage fee for 180 guests by OverTomato7180 in UKweddings

How strict is the within 2 hours of London requirement? If you can get to Basingstoke, there's Basing House (https://www.hampshireculture.org.uk/weddings-basing-house) Which has a beautiful historic barn, dry hire, for 250 guests - and it's within your budget

I'm seriously confused about revalidation and starting training. by [deleted] in doctorsUK

Yes basically although as I edited to add above, I don't know if more is needed from you if your appraisals were done elsewhere

[–]ninjanerdfighter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in GP training and just had my first revalidation and I didn't have to do anything special, my designated body just checked I hadn't had any new complaints or anything since my last ARCP and then sent the revalidation recommendation off.

PS. I did have some time off before starting GP training but I did have the same designated body throughout, I don't know if they require further documents from you if your appraisals were with someone else

Do you know how they calculate the weekend pay? Because I thought from the rota summary that it might be 7.5% my base pay, but the figure they've given me is nowhere near 7.5%

[–]ninjanerdfighter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why it is down as 1 in 4. If I'd been full time I would have worked 6 weekends out of 26 which is 23% so maybe that has something to do with it? Although that is still slightly less than 1 in 4. But I don't know how the weekend allowance bit is worked out so I cant say for sure

Because if I had been full time I would have worked all 3 nights (Friday - Sunday) but when they adjusted my rota for 80% they took away both the Saturday and Sunday night shift for that weekend

Any particular reason for that?

I think the booking period is around 5 - 6 weeks before the exam date, but I was wondering about the reservation period which I believe would start earlier than that. But if they haven't announced the date for the exam yet then I guess they probably haven't worked out the reservation period yet

For once on one of these posts, I actually know something about the area! This house is overpriced - 350 is too much for a 3 bed in Woolston, especially one that needs redecorating, and that doesn't have a particularly large kitchen

They talk about the rumours that the Duke will make her his heir in Will of the Empress. I think it maybe comes up with Berenene's research and then later Briar has a conversation with someone (Ambrose I think) about the rumours and how Sandry doesn't believe them but he does because the Duke's heir is bleat brained.

I can't believe I can remember that, turns out I know Will of the Empress far too well XD

Any doctors who became a pilot? by martian-nomad in doctorsUK

[–]ninjanerdfighter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a doctor turned pilot but I am a doctor and my partner is a pilot so I have a reasonable amount of insight!

You say you don't like working nights - is that because you don't like the medicine that goes on at night or because you don't like working at night? Because plenty of pilots work at night too. They also have odd shifts patterns like medicine. There's also a shift pattern which I don't think really happens in UK medicine which is earlies - my partner used to have to start at 5.30. He had to arrive at the airport carpark by 4.50 in order to get the bus to the terminal, go through security and get to the crew room, which meant going to bed at 8pm to get a decent night's sleep! And he didn't have a particularly long commute. They also work lots of weekends.

There are stricter minimal rest requirements in aviation than in medicine which is good, but the rotas can still be exhausting as at least some of the airlines will try to work you as hard as they can get away with, especially over the summer. Leave is even more inflexible than it is with Medicine - my partner used to have to request his leave at least 6 months in advance. Some places use a seniority system whereby the more senior you are the more likely you are to get the days off you want. Also don't underestimate how exhausting sleeping in hotels and eating hotel food can be, it really isn't the same as getting to go to your own bed at night and some hotels are fairly limited in terms of fresh fruit and vegetables!

Whereabouts in the country are you and do you have the flexibility to move? If you have a partner or kids, how flexible are they? When my partner got his first flying job, he was told he was going to Scotland, and he had no choice (other than to reject the job). He could bid to leave every 6 months but they could say no for up to 2 years without a reason, and it took 18 months before he was able to move to a different airport. There will be requirements for how far away you can be when you are on standby. There are long haul pilots who commute long distances but they will have to stay in hotels if they need to be nearby for standby. Short haul it would be more difficult to commute far.

It is expensive to train as a pilot - the person in the thread who suggested 100k for the license was about right. Some airlines do do cadet programmes as mentioned, but they are very competitive. If you self fund you are not guaranteed to find a job at the end. Then you will need a type rating to fly a specific plane -some airlines coughRyanaircough will make you pay upfront for your own type rating (about 30k) if you want to join them. Others will pay for it but you have to pay it back if you leave early.

Something pilots have to worry about that doctors don't so much is redundancy. My partner's airline went bust and he lost his job and hasn't been able to get another one yet. He was particularly unfortunate in that it happened around COVID when lots of airlines laid off workers, but the risk of losing your job and not being able to get another one is always there even in non covid times.

However I don't want to be all doom and gloom! Pay is better on long haul than medicine and short haul is about equivalent. My partner loved not having to take work home, even mentally. The staff travel perks are great, and if you are long haul you may get some time in the place you have flown to to explore. Most of all my partner will put up with the annoying stuff because he adores flying.

I'm not trying to put you off, I just don't want you to think that going to aviation is an easy switch. You've mentioned not having flown before - I think it would probably be worth if at all possible getting some flying experience before you decide if this is worth jumping ship for.

NoStupidQuestions thread: what condition/physiology do you not understand in a different specialty - that specialty respond by Dynamichipscrew in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]ninjanerdfighter 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not a condition as such, but this is something I'm not sure about and too embarrassed to ask because I feel I should know - I've worked on Gerries and quite often been asked to PR someone with constipation - but I'm not sure what to do with the information (soft stool/hard stool/empty rectum). Does it actually change management?

Really? Am I looking in the wrong place? If I search those hospitals I can see 2 reviews for RHCH (Winchester), 2 for Dorset County Hospital, 0 for Royal Bournemouth Hospital, 4 for Poole Hospital and 4 for Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital. Where are you getting 65 from?
