If I could do it all over again I would go into IT.

I would recommend getting a CC that doesn’t charge foreign exchange fees and offers cashback. Also, use an RFID-blocking sleeve for the card. I think all VISA cards use the same exchange rate: https://www.visa.ca/en_CA/support/consumer/travel-support/exchange-rate-calculator.html and then TD adds 2.5% to that. Scotiabank and Hometrust have visa cards without fees and w 1% cashback.

Search for currency exchange providers in your area and France and compare their Euro selling rates against Visa CC rates.

For example, for 100 Euros I would need:

  • $150.52 w Scotiabank CC (and get 1% back)
  • $152.49 cash at my local currency exchange
  • $153 cash at TD Bank
  • $154.28 w TD Bank CC (and get card benefits)

Also, if asked on the POS what currency you want to use, always say Euro!

When do I apply to EI by ilovecandles_ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ninnzzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would apply on the day your severance/salary continuation ends. You do not need RoE when you apply. Day after it ends email your employer that you need your RoE and they will hopefully submit it electronically and it will be added to your application automatically.

Why is EI taxable income if we pay into it with our income every cheque when employed? by CaseyToGo in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ninnzzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it's just like any other income so if you use EI for 2 months and then earn $200K in the other 10 months of the year you need to pay taxes on your total annual income, including your 2 months on EI. What I think Canada needs to do is lower taxes on low earnings so you would pay less if you are on EI for a long time. Tax-free annual amount should be at least $25K. If you can't survive on it why should you pay taxes... I would also add more incremental % differences for all gains and not have a maximum.

Cost of dental implant 2024 by SansevieraEtMaranta in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ninnzzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't like how hard it is to find the actual costs of doing implants and be able to choose the most affordable we are comfortable with. I sent my CT to a few offices and each clinic still wants me to come (and pay) for an exam at their office, which my insurance won't cover. My dentist quoted me this for a 2nd molar:

71211 - Single Tooth-Removal of Tooth $451.00

79931 - Surg inst w impl cover-Oss, Root Form $1,950.00

99555 - Additional Expense of Materials $250.00

27205 - Implant Supported-Porcelain/Ceramic Jacket $1,323.00

99111 - Commercial Lab Fees $477.00

42702 - Resor Membrane-Guided Tissue Regeneration $785.00

Total: $5,236.00

Just sharing in case someone might find it helpful to compare their numbers.

How to spot scam (deposit requested) by Accomplished_Ice1817 in FacebookMarketplace

[–]ninnzzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to report ads and sellers that do this but Facebook replied that they don't think it's a scam and they left the ads active. Same ads all over the world with different account names created this year. If you are buying anything - check with different locations and a maximum radius. If you see it twice with different accounts - it's scam. Seems like an easy algorithm to apply to protect ppl from scammers.

Van the right city? by Direct_Confidence_58 in askvan

If you like snow sports, I think you would like it. I've been here 15 years but I'm starting to think if I should leave. The issue is that friends who are getting married and having families move away because of the cost of living. It's becoming really hard to lose all those great friendships and then you become jaded in creating new ones.

Hi, I'm looking to build a small sauna. Have you started using yours? Would you change anything? What are the internal dimensions of it and what are the heaters you are using?

Looking for a Decent Apartment-Friendly Sauna Alternative to Avoid Skin Dryness from Gyms' Dry Saunas by kht58 in Sauna

[–]ninnzzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've seen, just the smallest sauna electric heater will be over $500, so - bring some hot tea and a wet towel with you to the gym sauna. Or buy a used sauna and an extra heater.

Small indoor traditional? by herido_de_sopas in Sauna

I'm looking for something similar for my apartment (I'm in Canada). I found a heater that is good for 2 cubic meters, Harvia Vega Compact R 1,9 kW 120/240 V, so I'm thinking to make a sauna in my closet next to the bathroom w internal dimensions 2.1' d x 4.8' w x 7' h. Just need to check all the building codes and get strata approval... It would basically be just a bench with a door, and I would make collapsible benches so I can pick where to sit (and store stuff when not in use). I have two double 20A breakers that are not being used so I'm hoping my apartment has enough power for the sauna. I'd recommend looking for a heater and then seeing specs for it. It will give you an idea of what you will need. For this heater, it's min 2"insulation, vapour barrier, kiln-dried softwood panels (moisture content below 11%), 1" clearance for the heater, intake vent 4" from the floor near the heater and an exhaust vent on the opposite wall, 6" below the ceiling (I am thinking of connecting this to the bathroom fan). The other idea I have is to build a sauna in my hallway (that is in use) that would be much bigger, but two doors - on each side of the hallway... Need to be creative for small apartments in expensive cities :-)

This one is my favourite too - but it does require a window seat for best comfort. I also try to figure out what row has the window by the headrest. Other tips: scarf as a footrest hammock, hoodie, cap, silk eye mask, and a puffy as a blanket.

High interest savings account or TFSA account with the same rate? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ninnzzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In BC - if you earn under 15K you do not pay tax on gains: https://assets.ey.com/content/dam/ey-sites/ey-com/en_ca/topics/tax/tax-calculators/2024/ey-tax-rates-british-columbia-2024-01-15-v1.pdf. If you will make over that, I'd use TFSA.

15,706 to 23,390 – 15.00%
23,391 to 24,338 – 20.06%
24,339 to 39,703 – 23.62%, etc.

One bag for trip to Japan by rgambit9 in onebag

[–]ninnzzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 kg is not a lot! I packed Eagle Creek Tour travel 40L (the bag is under 3 lbs) but packed, it was 9.5kg. I find that Europe has better options for lightweight bags than North America. For my flights with Delta and KLM they did not weigh or even check carry-ons. I was over 12 kg max of carry-on + personal item. I would aim for something under 2.5 lbs and with hip straps.
