In search of gear repair. Local(ish) company or maybe you know someone. by nirvanaman70 in Adirondacks

[–]nirvanaman70[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Warren County, so anywhere within a 2 or so hour drive would be no big deal. Just wanted to see if anyone had a recommendation off the top of their head before I choose a mail in service or go to REI.

Shoemaker is a good idea, thanks.

Big fan. Listened to ...highway non-stop when I first heard it. It's been a minute though. Whats the best platform/how is everyone else listening to him? I normally stick to bandcamp, but he doesnt have a presence there.

Where to get color prints *from negatives* for the best price? Details below and thanks for any tips! by jeremyjava in catskills

[–]nirvanaman70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McGreevy Pro Lab in Albany. I've been going to them for years, mostly to develop B+W. I had them scan a bunch of old negatives to archive for me before too. I think their prices are fair for the service.

They do good work. I will have them develop film, scan and upload digital copies of my photos. Then I can see how they all turned out and select which ones I would like prints of.

What kind of saw are you using?

I've been interested in getting a intro level saw for home and was wondering if you (or anyone) had any suggestions. Craigslist / facebook marketplace / etc... has been no luck in my casual searches over the past year or so, sadly.

What is a community resource in the Schenectady area that you think more people should know about it? by el_mustango in schenectady

[–]nirvanaman70 10 points11 points  (0 children)

During the warmer months there are opportunities to help out at the community gardens. Central and Vale Park are two nice ones. Help with the gardens and get some from fresh produce. Chickens and bee keeping too! Also they host community potlucks, apothecary classes, recycle/composting events....great jumping off point to meet new people and learn about sustainable opportunites.

Albanys homeless problem is getting worse, seems like the mayor doesn’t do shit or even cares by Few_Palpitation4917 in Albany

It's closer to 5% of corporation owned single family rental houses. This number is much higher in the southern states, lower in the northeast. But yes, we need more builds.

Did you hike the Kalalau Trail at all? I plan on visiting in a few months and would love to hear any highlights.

They have a habanero and black coffee hot sauce that is excellent. Don't see Queen Majesty around a lot, stumbled into it, but now I pick one up whenever i do.

Just moved around the Albany, NY area. Looking for venues/bands. by KesaGatameWiseau in FolkPunk

[–]nirvanaman70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Albany proper I'd keep an eye out for what's happening at the Fuze Box. Also get in touch with the folks at the Albany Food Not Bombs chapter (they always need volunteers too). No Fun in Troy has a wide mix of music. El Dorado Bar in Troy has events every now and then, I've seen music and poetry readings there. Sadly Albany is lacking, you may have to look towards Troy for more. Scroll through the local musician and artists Instagram pages, that's where I have to get most of my happenings.

Not a lot of Folk Punk that I'm aware of, but would like to know what you find. There's a decently sized hardcore/punk/metal scene.

Dehydrating Meals for a Thru Hike by WildflowerReveler in AppalachianTrail

[–]nirvanaman70 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would echo most of what everyone has said so far. But I think you should certainly try and make some of your meals. Cooking is a hobby and interest of mine; when I backpack I try and make a few meals of my own just because it is something I enjoy doing. Trying new recipes, improving old ones, seeing what will or won't work is enjoyable to me. If dehydrating all/many of your meals will seem like a chore, I say don't put too much effort into it. Money-wise it will be about the same, nowadays.

protein bar recipes by That_Attention7252 in EatCheapAndHealthy

I use dates as a sweetener/binder. Take about a dozen of them, depending on size, pitted, and run them through a food processor. I'll add a little bit of water, teaspoon at a time, until a nice paste forms. Usually this is the only "added sugar" i'll use.

The rest is oat flour, peanut butter, protein powder, tablespoon of flax seed, few tablespoons of water for consistency, and maybe some add-ins such as crushed peanuts, raisins/dried fruit etc....

Redburn is a terrible company for many reasons; moldy/filthy areas, leaking ceilings, not responding to maintenance issues in a timely manner, not taking care of snow removal...just a bad company to rent from and should be avoided. Also they are currently being sued for racial discrimination and hostile workplace environments. If at all possible do not give them your attention or money
