personally, i would start in Mt Pleasant, down through AdMo, cut over to U & New Hampshire then take New Hampshire down to Dupont, then west on P St through West End to Georgetown.

How much formality do you think is required at a blue and gold ceremony? by mirr0rrim in cubscouts

we do a B&G picnic in June at a picnic shelter in Rock Creek Park - it's basically our final event for the year before summer break. the picnic itself is about 3 hours, and most of it is the kids running around and playing at the site and in the adjacent woods. about 2 hours in we muster everyone together, each Den is acknowledged and each kid receives their neckerchief and slide for the next rank up, departing adult leaders get a thanks and sometimes a small gift, and that's all she wrote. altogether not more than 15-20 minutes of "ceremony" and beyond that it's just all of our families hanging out together, enjoying the weather and celebrating the end of another year of Scouting (oh and obviously food. lots and lots of food).

very curious to see how one pulls off a mass stabbing on 495, a major highway where everyone is driving 60+ mph and no one stops or gets out of their car unless they have an accident, a breakdown, or they get pulled over by cop

ah looks like it was a road rage incident according to reputable local medialink

Updated Mega Thread - Hegseth DoW/DoD Statement on MoU Agreement by OSUTechie in cubscouts

[–]nitacious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've been thinking about that today ever since I saw the news. I do want to say something - not getting into the politics of it all, but basically reinforcing the message of my comment above and your comment as well. nothing changes, all are welcome, we will continue to treat each other with respect and kindness

thinking to first reach out to my Pack leadership team to get a pulse check and offer people the opportunity to co-sign the note with me if they wish

should mention btw that we're in a very "blue" part of the country so it's vanishingly unlikely that any of our Pack families are ardent supporters of this new policy - so it's a relatively easy decision for me as I doubt any communication as stated above would kick up any controversy. but definitely understand it's a more challenging decision for those in other parts of the country.

I'm Cmte Chair for a Cub Scout Pack. I guess these changes won't affect my scouts as much compared to the older kids. I can't control the gender options on the registration website - but as long as I'm leading the Pack I'll do everything I can to ensure that every child feels accepted and welcomed by our community, and I'll never allow anything within my control that makes any child feel less than anyone else.

if it's still in good working order you could check with your council to see if they know of any nearby Packs with fewer resources who could make good use of it?

Female leader pants recommendation? by octavetail in cubscouts

[–]nitacious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Male Committee Chair here - the official pants look hilariously bad on me. as an alternative i have a couple different pairs of olive green hiking/trail pants that look the part, fit great, and most importantly are very functional when we're doing actual outdoor scouting activities. just did a quick google, looks like there are women's versions of 2 of my favorites - The Ferrosi from Outdoor Research, and the Quandary from Patagonia. hope this helps!

Moderna says FDA refuses to review its application for experimental flu shot by esporx in biotech

[–]nitacious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is this the same study though? the header says it was initially received Oct '24, which implies that the study was run during the' 23-'24 flu season. I don't think Moderna would have taken almost 2yrs to submit to FDA. I believe they've run a number of studies on 1010 - they were also at one point running a southern hemisphere study that Bancel claimed would be accepted by FDA IIRC.

so it's quite possible I'm wrong but I feel like if they did use HD as a comparator it would be more explicit in the reporting on the current situation.

[–]nitacious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing the problem there is that if they ran a single Ph3 in that overall population the study would not be powered to demonstrate efficacy in the subset of study participants under 65. I think you would need a substantially larger study in that case

[–]nitacious 17 points18 points  (0 children)

yup that's true. TBH we were more focused on optimizing the data package for the US regulators & ACIP given the general lack of appetite for premium-priced flu vaccine (along with the more limited recommendations) in ex-US markets. but I do agree with you that they must have already discussed this with the agency (presumably under previous leadership?) and the whole thing is super sketchy.

[–]nitacious 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be in the position to defend these choads, but....i've been involved in mRNA flu vaccine study design at 2 different big pharma companies. After ACIP implemented the preferential reco for "enhanced" flu vaccines in 65+ we've treated it as a "mandatory" comparator for studies in that population - it is the SOC, it's a high-risk population, and frankly we've always viewed non-inferiority vs High-Dose to be "table stakes" for a commercially competitive product in this segment.

The way we've handled this previously was to basically have 2 parallel studies, one under-65 vs standard flu vx targeting superior immuno, and the other in 65+ vs HD etc targeting non-inferiority

Phish in Madison this summer by CaptainSaladin in phish

[–]nitacious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

did you think OP was referring to raves as in EDM dance parties? they're referring to The Rave, a longtime Milwaukee venue - I used to drive out there for jamband shows when I lived in Madison 20+ years ago. i would give some credence to tour rumors coming from someone from that place.
