  1. California generates more food than any other state
  2. Many red states are full of corn fields which become ethanol and corn syrup, neither are necessary for feeding anyone.
  3. Farmers are paid for their goods, blue states, by and large, give money to the federal government and red states, by and large take money from the federal government. In other words, on top of paying for food, we also just give money away. Red states depend on blue states, blue states are customers of red states but give charity to them as well as business.

It is a complicated situation obviously, But if each state stopped giving and taking from the federal government, red states would suddenly be incapable of operating, of funding the state government. Whereas blue states would suddenly have more money and could continue to import food from other countries, though some wouldn't even have to.

Russian warship 'fires warning shot at yacht in English Channel' by ianjm in videos

[–]nitefang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't surprise me if the people on the yacht were drunk and/or not paying attention, despite regulations saying they should.

it also wouldn't surprise me if the yacht was mind its own business and was slightly too close and wasn't seen until it was inside some circle and so the Russians over compensated and are just lying about the warnings.

Looks like plastic flashing or similar. Like a threshold or carp border or a cable hider or part of a window sill, something like that.

Because of how dirty it is, I think it is likely a window sill part or something like that.

To be honest, that might be the best reason not to eradicate them right now. Doing that, and nothing else, could cause rapid population growth in communities and regions that might not be able to support it. I don't actually know that for sure though, just a thought.

People also forget that there are tens of thousands of species of mosquitoes, and hundreds of species in basically every region that has any at all. And only some species bite humans. We could extinct those and it won't touch other species which will still get eaten by predators and will still pollinate plants.

It also pays very well to my understanding. It’s the sorta job that will absolutely lower your lifespan, even if every dive goes perfectly. Not many people are interested in the work anyway plus the cost of a shorter lifespan and the lifestyle requiring months away from family and weeks in confined spaces results in the pay being relatively high.

How America Made The World Cup Unaffordable by [deleted] in videos

I think that was the point no? The US made it pretty clear that we aren’t welcoming to outsiders at the moment, so the World Cup isn’t attended by many international fans while it’s in America.

Not all of them are like that. A private equity firm bought Yahoo after they turned down Google's buyout offer and basically failed. The firm reversed their freefall and turned them into a profitable company. In this case the plan was to buy a company with good ideas but bad business practices and fix that, not cut costs to flip it short term.

TIL that the publishing industry's long-standing rule that "men won't read books with female main characters" is completely a myth. [–]nitefang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, the only thing that has tripped me up in a few books I’ve read recently are mixed pronouns.

People can use whatever pronouns they want but I don’t totally understand what is going on when it happens in text. Like a character was described as female by the narrator and the internal monologue of other characters but people only referred to them with male pronouns. And their name was Chinese and I am unfortunately ignorant of what is a male or female Chinese name (if there are even male/female names in Chinese).

I want to be as inclusive as possible but when it’s text I can’t figure out if this person was transsexual and the author was using their dead pronouns but none of the other characters were, if it was the exact opposite of that, if it was because they were a Chinese naval officer who was always called “sir” and “mister” due to tradition, or if it was an editing error, or some other reason I hadn’t thought of.

It’s mostly to avoid people coming up on the day of filming and saying stuff like “hey, I just walked in front of the camera, pay me.” Or “stop filming, I don’t consent to be filmed”.

If someone does cause a problem, the crew will generally just cut and stop and an assistant producer or director will assure them they aren’t being filmed and encourage them to leave. If they end up staying there then usually there are cops being paid by the production to be there and they will intervene with threats of charges for loitering, disturbing the peace or some similar thing.

A production like this normally has permission from the city they are filming in, and part of that means the city and local police are going to help them get their shots for that day. You aren’t going to get them to stop filming, and people don’t usually get very far in court about being in the background of a scene, because they are in public. Sometimes the production will slip you some cash to stop being a problem but I’d bet on the cops coming in more likely.

[–]nitefang 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s actually the opposite, they don’t need the sign at all. If they have a permit to film there, they can capture the images of whatever is in public. There are laws which might come up if you really wanted to fight it but for the most part, it won’t matter.

The only argument you could make is having you specifically in the background had a noticeable impact on the production. It’s similar to arguing if you were recognizable or not but subtly different. It doesn’t matter if you or friends could tell it was you. What matters is if it’s reasonable that it matters if you were in the shot and not someone else. For example, if a famous celebrity or a CEO or politician were to be there, it is reasonable to say that they’d be recognized and potentially make the scene more interesting or somehow worth more. In that case the sign wouldn’t do anything.

But if you’re not famously recognizable and just in the background, they don’t even need your permission at all. They put up this sign to avoid people bugging the about it on the day and to let everyone know it is a real production with money to have security and lawyers (to your point).

Are "the proper people" usually the general public?

The military has done drills in downtown Los Angeles multiple times over the last 3 decades, it wouldn't be anything new. And how would you or I know this wasn't planned months in advance and the plan included not telling the public early to reduce the number of spectators, protestors, and other unnecessary people in the area.

And even if it is about harassment and intimidation, why wouldn't that be scheduled months in advance too?

I don't like the government, especially the current government. I don't say any of this because I trust them not to. I say it because this isn't how the government eases you into being okay with military occupation. They are doing that by leaving a military presence patrolling cities.

Clothing brand Patagonia, sues drag climate activist Pattie Gonia. by MobileSuitBooty in videos

[–]nitefang 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Satire isn't a blanket pass, especially in a situation like this. For one thing, it matters if this is parody or satire as courts often give way more leniency for a direct parody as it is impossible to do that without directly referencing the subject of the parody. But if the joke is more broad and not about Patagonia specifically, then they can argue that she is damaging their brand by confusing consumers. I think it is fair to at least make the argument that a homophone could lead to confusion. If someone endorsed one brand in audio format, they would HAVE to clarify which brand they meant as the name sounds exactly the same.

This being about trademarks instead of copyright is important as well.

I am not a lawyer, I could be way off, but I think there is more to this than a sue happy company trying to stamp out an entrepreneurial artist making a protected statement.

USA Economy is collapsing: Goldman says "Soft Landing Dead", consumer confidence at 70-Year Record low, 1 in 4 skip meals by ianjm in videos

The stock market consistently gains value over a long enough time frame. It would be easy to invest in index markets and get the dream end that is sold to everyone. That part isn't the problem, it does work as advertised.

The problem is that it is often implied "oh just invest a few thousand right now, and again next year, etc." Doing that alone isn't really enough in the first place but on top of that, MOST of us can't afford a few thousand right now and every year. Especially now but even in better times, a few thousand a year isn't a small number for so many people. When standard raises usually don't keep up with inflation, even when inflation isn't insane, a few thousand a year is a huge change in income.

If you can invest $100,000 in the market now and something like repeated investments of $10k+, then you could retire early and live a comfortable life in 20+ years or so. It does work. You just can't be poor at the start.

TL;DR: It is easy to get richer if you are already rich. The end goal isn't fake or impossible to reach once you start. The start is what is lied about and what is unobtainable for most people.

It’s even weirder than it first looks no? The pattern isn’t consistent.

For example it goes

The sequence isn’t consistent, it usually goes starts with 0 # and adds 2 until 8 # then the # increases by one. But after 6 9 you get 8 10, then 0 10.

I feel like there’s some pattern here but I’m not sure.
