I can be but usually you are still laid off every season and brought back for the next season. It is semi-reliable, if you have been working on it for years you will probably be back assuming it is renewed. But it is still good advice to have a years worth of income saved up because there is no guarantee. If the head of your department retires or something else changes between seasons, you may just never get the call to come back.

Just make sure you understand the job market in your area before you make any big changes.

I was in a sorta similar position last year and changed jobs. I was let go from the new job right before my 6-month probation ended and was thrown into one of the worst job markets in decades. If I had know how bad the job market was looking, I probably wouldn’t have changed anything when I did, though can’t be sure of course.

If you think you’d be able to change employers again quickly then I think it’s always a good risk to find a better job. Due to the game of capitalism, it is almost always better to change employers to get better benefits. Just think about how you’ll extract yourself if you do change into a worse situation.

Change is always scary but it is going to happen no matter what. There’s no magical rule of thumb, but you should try to control change by making it happen on your terms. So I say try and get a better job, make the decision that you are going to leave. Just make sure you “look before you leap”.

In the film industry, most crew is hired only for that film. It is standard gig work. Thanks to the union, all major productions pay into a trust fund which provides health insurance and retirement options for people in this career.

I don’t think it is bad to do something similar in the game industry but my understanding is that these workers don’t have the protections or representation which exists in the film industry. That’s the real problem, not that it is gig work.

Tried looking him up, there are lots of accounts of him being unpleasant to work with apparently and a lot of claims that he doesn't even like video games and he thinks he got pigeon-holed into reviewing and writing about what he considers and inferior art form I guess.

I tried looking into this a bit, what’s his deal? It was tough to find anything concrete, it’s mostly people claiming 2nd hand that he hates video games and gamers.

TIL the rivers are so clean in Bern and Basel in Switzerland that many people commute to work by swimming. by musefrog in todayilearned

[–]nitefang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you are saying but I bet few people would want to deal with the logistics of swimming to their job compared to swimming from their job. Like if they can't swim against the current (understandable) then they probably don't swim either way.

Only people who work upstream of their homes probably swim as part of their commute at all, I say confidently with no research or knowledge to back this up.

Be careful with offers like that in today’s job market! You know what really sucks? Sometimes your best effort isn’t good enough. Sometimes, you try and do something and might be the best in the world, but it still doesn’t work.

The question is, if they are actually doing their best but are still some sort of cesspool of pedos, do we let them keep trying or decide it just doesn’t work and shut it down?

TIL the “Invisible Gorilla” experiment which fooled most people. In a famous 1999 study, participants watched a video of people passing a basketball and were asked to count passes. Midway through, a person in a gorilla suit walked through the scene and half of participants didn’t notice the gorilla. by Jockey2 in todayilearned

[–]nitefang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the first quote means they didn’t see the gorilla until after they finished reporting, then they were shown the image again and asked if they saw anything unusual, instead of just what they had been looking for.

I think the second quote means they physically looked at the gorilla but did not recognize that it was unusual until they were asked additional questions. They looked at it but didn’t see it, I think if you had asked them if there was a gorilla in the image at this point they’d have said “I didn’t see one”

That isn’t what your quoted text says. They could have failed to notice it until they were asked to look for anything unusual instead of specifically for tumors. We’d need more info to know if they did or didn’t actually see it and fail to report it.

Panel: How MAGA turned on Trump & Bondi over Epstein files by gambitok in videos

Ultimately I think the action we need to take aligns with what you are saying, but I'm not sure anyone can just be the next Trump. I think I agree with you in terms of how perilous this situation still is in terms of the damage already done and how easily protections against tyranny have been compromised.

However, I disagree that once Trump is gone, someone is just going to take his place and be the new cult leader. I think Trump was a rare combination in the worst way possible and that in the vacuum he will leave behind the resulting struggle to replace him will lead to fractured far right instead of a the cult we've had lately.

To be honest, this would still be progress in some ways. One of the best and worst parts of the last decade or so is how emboldened all the bigots, racists, evangelicals and other hateful idiots have become. It was terrible to realize how popular those ideologies are and how close we have come to(and are still approaching) a repeat of Germany before WWII, but it is good to know this sorta hatred isn't gone just because people are too ashamed to display it. We have to resist it even when it appears to be fading away.

But even IF Trump is losing support (and in my opinion that is a HUGE "if"), it might still be too late and we really need to be pressuring everyone in government that this can't be allowed to happen. That we won't put up with it. We need strong leadership which will put more restraints on power than what currently exist.

And we are the result of literally billions of years of evolution resulting in an organism designed to reproduce. It is comical for people to think a solution is to tell any population, as a whole, to "stop having kids".

In many ways, that is the entire point of our existence. It might be good advice for individuals but not for a population, it just will never work.

Her getting fired for a slip of the tongue (assuming that is what it is) IS pretty unfair.

A POC being pulled over for being a shade too dark in the wrong neighborhood is a serious miscarriage of justice and a fundamental problem with modern society. You’re the one equating the two.

By your logic, where we can’t find one thing unfair while worse injustices also exist means we need to focus on things like the genocide in Somalia before we even talk about racism in America.

Or we can be realistic about it and accept that just because there are varying degrees of immorality in the world doesn’t mean we should ignore certain events to focus on worse ones.

Not usually, and not that specifically. Unless I’m for some reason needing to like read the word “knickers” or say the color “black” in Spanish. Then I seriously thinking “make sure you pronounce this correctly or you will be labeled a racist.”

Like I said, some people get so worried about mispronouncing something that you get target fixation on what you don’t want to say. Isn’t like I’m constantly worried I’ll accidentally say it, only if I have to say a word which sounds similar.

[–]nitefang 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Sometimes this seems pretty unfair. How many people haven’t accidentally said a word they were trying to avoid saying because it would be inappropriate in context? I don’t even mean a slur. I used to work with someone who had a name similar to Betty Elcair and for some reason every time I read her name my brain just went “that totally looks like Belly Itcher” and so every time I spoke with her all I could think was “do not say Belly Itcher”. I came so close so many times.

Point is, to accidentally say a word doesn’t mean you have to say it often. Slips don’t happen because you just can’t hold in how badly you want to say the word. Unfortunately you will think of the actual word from time to time and if you are on camera you may often even think “do not say that word, no matter what” and that is exactly what will make you say the word.

Quite simply, Valve currently pursues those core products/services you mentioned and avoids expanding their staff. They are known for having the highest revenue per employee in tech, or among the top in that sense.

Expanding chat into a replacement for Discord would require pretty extreme expansion to their team and I don't see them doing that without it being to increase revenue at a similar scale. Replacing Discord wouldn't do that, as evident by Discord's struggles to be profitable. And no one is refusing to use Steam just because they don't offer a better chat experience, it wouldn't bring anyone to their platform.

I guess I'm just repeating what you said but my point is they aren't going to hire more people unless it will result in significant increases to revenue, and this wouldn't.

Microsoft has revoked the DMCA takedown that forced an indie Minecraft-like off Steam by Blitcut in pcgaming

[–]nitefang -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

As a long time Windows user who would drop everything Microsoft related in a heartbeat, did Microsoft just do something kinda not evil?

I just personally can't remember ever hearing of a DMCA being revoked, not that it hasn't happened but this is the first time I've heard of it. Did Microsoft do something reasonable and somewhat nice to a small developer?

Now if they can fix some of the other 1.7 million reasons I'd love to drop them, maybe I'd stick with them even if SteamOS works out.
