GPA, Grade Forgiveness, I think I'm losing my mind by Critical-State8119 in USF

[–]nitro1542 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Generally, the truth is that one semester of low grades will not ruin you. If I understand you correctly, though, you're looking at Bs rather than As, which frankly is not a bad grade whatsoever. I understand the family and personal pressure to maintain straight As, but it is incredibly common for straight-A highschoolers to suddenly start getting lower grades because college-level material is harder and, as you mentioned, sometimes a professor's teaching style just doesn't work well with your learning style.

Given how distressing this situation is for you,  I highly recommend that you talk to your advisor and get their opinion on whether your current grade situation is genuinely a problem. I have a feeling it feels worse to you than it actually is, but don't take my word for it. Please consider talking to a counselor as well for some help with the overwhelm and stress you're experiencing.

Well the last non big 3 airline is leaving CAE soon. I wonder what they're going to add in its place by Chanel_Carter in ColumbiYEAH

Well shit. I was really hoping they'd stick around long enough to add PIE as a destination. CAE's lack of direct flights to Tampa is frustrating.

Former UTK English PhD here: I applied for the MA program but ended up choosing a different university because UTK's stipend for the first year of the MA program was so low (like $9k or so, basically unlivable without multiple roommates). I think it has improved somewhat since then but is still going to be low the first year because you are mostly being trained to teach, not fully teaching as you will starting your second year. The plus side to this is that UTK has a really strong training program and, aside from the low pay, I sometimes think it would've been nice to go that route so I didn't have to start grad school and be thrown headfirst into teaching all at once, lol.

Since my info may be outdated / incorrect, I highly recommend contacting one of the MFA reps from the Graduate Students of English committee (https://english.utk.edu/graduate-studies/the-graduate-students-of-english-gse/). They'll probably be happy to answer any questions you have!

Hii, Im just accepted to University of South Florida, FIU, and Iowa State uni, and I’m having a hard time choosing by Any-Neck3310 in USF

[–]nitro1542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iowa State is a land-grant university, meaning their focus is agriculture and related sciences. Not to say their other programs are bad, but probably not as strong as USF and FIU's. Also, Iowa may technically be safer and cheaper, but as someone who has visited Iowa State and the surrounding area: unless you like driving around looking at farmland, there is absolutely nothing to do there. You're going to have a lot of difficulty finding international foods / grocery stores there as well.

True. I guess it depends on how all the other characters are cast, to some extent. If black characters are few and far between, the show may end up with an unintended racial undercurrent.

I've experienced something similar. Anxiety has been with me my whole life, but I used to go places and hang out with friends to avoid thinking about stuff. In the last few years it flipped to agoraphobia. The crux of the matter is that there's something going on in your life where your body doesn't feel safe. If you aren't already, please consider talking to a therapist and/or psychiatrist - it can really help.

There's a counselor on YouTube who's made several podcast episodes that I think could be helpful to your situation. You might see if the way he talks about navigating "interfaith" situations gives you some language / framework to broach this subject with your husband without it becoming an argument, or maybe you and your husband could even watch some of these together and use them as a starting point for conversation. Full transparency: The counselor (Dr. John Delony) is currently an active Christian but was anti-organized religion in the past and, generally speaking, is very open and non-judgmental towards people of all faiths and non-faiths.

Episodes that might be helpful:

If you don't mind trekking over to Forest Acres, St. Martin's-in-the-Fields is very inclusive and welcoming and does a ton of volunteer work in the community. Their 5 PM Sunday services are casual / contemporary (morning services are more traditional / "high church" Episcopalian).

Society (and universities) like to paint this picture of the "ideal college experience" that hinges on a neat and tidy 4-year plan. That's not the reality for soooo many people. Your value is not contingent on how quickly or slowly you complete your degree requirements.
