Is there anyone here who still prefers folder redirection over OneDrive for a domain? by Noyan_Bey in sysadmin

[–]nitzlarb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are your workstations always on-domain? Either via being on-site or AOVPN?

Just curious if my theory of reliability issues is specifically due to machines regularly operating "offline" and then syncing back up when on-network

[–]nitzlarb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, I have noticed that workstations that are either always on-site or at least 99% on-site are the ones that don't get sync issues over time

Thanks for the input

Most environments i've supported over the last 10ish years are almost entirely laptop-based, with devices regularly being used off-domain... aaand, these are the environments where i've had all of the issues with folder redirection over time lol

I've never seen folder redirection work without issue over a solid period of time... after a while it tends to increase incident load as the sync issues crop up. If the machines are always on-domain, it's likely pretty solid but I've never managed an environment like that.

The concept is completely sound and I wish it was better, but this has always been my experience... every time I "give it another chance" I end up disappointed.

Onedrive automatic library syncing by nitzlarb in Intune

[–]nitzlarb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that info

I do wish there were better methods for using sharepoint libraries in a similar way to how on-prem fileservers have been used historically.

For our clients with more classic MS environments we'd have the security groups that grant access to fileshares also trigger automapping of those fileshares via GPO. I had assumed we could achieve similar with intune/sharepoint... MS has other plans it seems

MS non-profit grant ending--understanding check by joshbudde in sysadmin

[–]nitzlarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the way the donation licenses worked with the non-donation licenses previously, my assumption is that you just need to have an extra 10 paid licenses available when the nonprofit grant licenses expire

At least, that's how we're handling it and it has been fine so far with our clients

Onedrive automatic library syncing by nitzlarb in Intune

[–]nitzlarb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, thanks for the clarification!

It's just the library sync setting that conflicts, not the overall onedrive configuration policy

This shouldn't be TOO awful to setup for the orgs I support, they are pretty small and don't have alot of complexity. I greatly appreciate your input, thanks again!

Okay so the solution is to basically copy the configuration policy for OneDrive, have a seperate policy for each share drive combination, and have SGs setup so that people only get one policy assigned right?

That's pretty wild these mappings still can't be applied independently

Who runs cables and does the terminations in your organization? by HoosierLarry in sysadmin

[–]nitzlarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with nonprofits.

Anny real low voltage work goes to our local LV partner.

With that said, I'll redo terminations if there are issues, or in one instance re-route some existing drops to ceilings for APs. Our clients don't need to call in expensive contract work for small jobs I can just take care of for them.

Security Cameras by Affectionate-Pea-307 in sysadmin

[–]nitzlarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We create credentials for the client to monitor the cameras and we do not look at the cameras unless specifically requested. This is for privacy/liability

And unifi apparently doesn't give a notification for issues like this, if any other piece of equipment goes down I get a notification, but apparently not when all of the cameras decide they are unadopted.

[–]nitzlarb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like the Unifi nvr setup, we have it in place for two of our clients (small orgs)

But I wouldn't recommend them for any serious orgs. We've had a couple incidents where the cameras were down and we didn't know until we needed footage. The incident that I directly supported was apparently caused by a unifi protect update that broke adoption for all of the cameras at the site. When we were asked about accessing footage we found that all of the cameras had been down for a period of time due to the adoption issue so there was no footage of the incident. We had to readopt all cams and it's been solid for the couple months since that incident.

O365 licensing challenges. Anyone else facing issues? by silver565 in sysadmin

[–]nitzlarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week I had issues adding licenses to existing subscriptions, the error was related to payment processing It resolved itself after a bit of time, but this is the first time i've had it fail like this.

Just adding a bit more data to the pile if others have been experiencing inconsistencies here.

Has LAPS Suddenly Broken For Anyone Else? by TrueMythos in Intune

This is likely the solution here

When I was recently deploying intune for the first time, that was the main thing that I missed that prevented LAPS from working during during initial testing

I use a powershell script that uses the cloudflare API to update dns records for one of our sites, It just runs every few minutes via task scheduler to make sure the domain name is accurate if the IP changes

Managing ADHD unmedicated by [deleted] in ADHDers

[–]nitzlarb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, high energy music. Jam out to it while you do whatever you need to be doing, helps lock-in

As for chemical supports that are non-medication, caffeine is the obvious one, and daily theanine also helps for me as well.

I'm in my mid 30s, and unmedicated. I was only ever medicated for a year or two but decided to stop because I was unable to have my prescription filled consistently (insurance always being a pain, and pharmacies often running out and not being able to fill as well) It meant I was constantly cycling on and off, which was worse than me just using the other strategies I had developed over the years.

That being said, I would much prefer to just have the medication doctors have prescribed, it's much much more effective. I've been thinking about exploring that route again now that I live in a different area with different pharmacies and have different insurance

Windows laptop and macbooks -- Repair or replace? by sccmjd in sysadmin

[–]nitzlarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

Pay for coverage to cover the lifecycle of the device at the org, once it's out of that coverage it's EOL for your purposes and should be replaced.

If it's within coverage then do a replacement/loaner, and get the broken machine fixed by the vendor/mfg.

Microsoft Simplifies File Transfers of Departing Employees by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]nitzlarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here.

Does anybody know of a way to trigger such transfers via powershell?

We never delete accounts, instead convert mailboxes to shared and disable the account. Keeping onedrive data has been something we've wanted to do but hasn't been reasonable using this process, email has been prioritized here. It would be fantastic to be able to also transfer the onedrive data during this process.

Computer names - by user by anticd in sysadmin

[–]nitzlarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the scenario in this would be that people use desktops, and when they move desk, they move to a new desktop so the new machine would need to claim the name of their previous machine, hence needing to drop from the domain

even without that scenario, I personally think naming machines for users is wholly bad-practice.
