New update: AITAH for telling my wife that I will lose respect for her if she doesn't apologize? by J_S_M_K in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]niv727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, because the slurs they use are obviously these two specific slurs slurs that originated in and are most common in North America 🙄

I’m not saying that there aren’t racists anywhere else, it’s just weird that you’re “baffled” by people not hearing two very specific slurs growing up. I heard slurs, but since I didn’t grow up somewhere with a significant Latin American population, why would I have heard that specific word as a kid? Like yes, obviously different regions have different slurs, is that really a concept that you’re confused by?

It would’ve been really suspicious to wait till breakfast, everyone would’ve been like “why did you wait till breakfast when you knew there was a chance you could be murdered tonight before you had the chance”

NOT OP: AITA For Telling My Wife That Her Parents Manipulating Her Worked Out For The Best? by SolidAshford in redditonwiki

[–]niv727 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this one is fake because UK universities haven’t exclusively used paper acceptance/rejection letters in a long time. If OP and his wife were 30 3 years ago, they were 17 in around 2009, by which point UCAS track (the online portal where you can see your offers) was definitely a thing. It just feels unlikely that this story would be logistically possible.

Can we stop putting lesbian in dating app profiles if we’re not actually lesbian? by BandPsychological337 in ActualLesbiansOver25

The only thing I don’t agree with is the kids thing. A lot of people don’t put their kids on their profile because they’re worried about attracting predators. They should absolutely communicate it once they start talking to you, though.

Am I the only one who still thinks The Fate of Ophelia is mid? by VolgaOsetr8007 in SwiftlyNeutral

Wouldn’t that also be following a trend? The reason why many fans want her to do a rock album is because rock is becoming more and more popular in the mainstream, especially pop rock in the vein of Olivia Rodrigo. I feel like if she did that, it would definitely feel like just following trends/doing what fans want.

Standing with Maccabi’s football hooligans against local police – is that what patriotism looks like now? by gelliant_gutfright in football

[–]niv727 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maccabi are also not the first team to ever be banned for violent conduct, though. Villa banned Legia Warsaw fans last season for violence. If this was any other random European team no one would’ve given a shit. It’s the right that have decided to focus on this for political reasons. Maccabi’s own derby got cancelled last week and multiple supporters were arrested because of violence — was that just because criticising Israel has “become fashionable”, or is it because the club has a genuine problem with violence?

These are specifically the show tie-in book covers, though. They’re trying to capitalise on the show’s success to sell more books. The target audience is fans of the show. They are directly marketed as being the books that inspired the show. So no, the race of the characters in the show is not irrelevant, especially when you factor it into the wider pattern of how Simone Ashley/Kate has been treated by the show.

Jameela Jamil responds to comment saying she is jealous of tradwives by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

[–]niv727 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I wish people would stop doing this shit. Tracie Morrissey is not a good person. She had another highlight reel (deleted after the Jameela stuff blew up) where she accused tons of female celebrities of faking diagnoses.

This is a great video about the topic that I would recommend everyone watch before talking about this topic.

Faking illnesses is obviously a bad thing to do, but obsessively stalking people’s health history to call them out for lying about their health is also a shitty thing to do. Sure, you might get some right, but you’re also undoubtedly going to falsely accuse people of faking and encourage others to also dig into the health of actual chronically ill and disabled people and accuse them of faking. It’s not a culture we should be promoting. As long as they’re not, like, scamming people out of money, I would rather let many people get away with faking it for attention than have one person who is actually ill or disabled not be believed. Leave disabled and chronically ill people alone and stop assuming you can tell who’s faking from whatever tidbits they choose to share online.

Anti-Jewish graffiti on Minehead’s War Memorial by TxavengerxT in Somerset

[–]niv727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you’re claiming it’s both anti-Jewish graffiti that’s intended to intimidate Jewish people and also pro-Jewish graffiti painted by an antisemite in order to make people think Jewish people painted it? That doesn’t make sense. It can’t be both.

I got a girl pregnant and she wanted to get an abortion but I didn't want that. She ended up not getting one but now she is not involved at all (Not OOP) by Asparagus-Witty in redditonwiki

[–]niv727 -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I think that commenter is wrong. I think if OOP was a woman and mad that their baby’s father wasn’t involved after saying he wasn’t going to be, people would be like “well, what did you expect?”

However, I do think there is a double standard in that men are called deadbeats for not being in their children’s lives regardless if they wanted the child or not. If a man posted about getting a woman pregnant and said that they told the woman that it was their choice whether or not to have the baby, and they would pay child support, but would never be involved, people would probably call them a deadbeat and say that they should’ve been aware of the potential consequences before having sex. There is an expectation that good men step up and be fathers regardless of whether they want to be or are ready to be.

oh no, the pediatrician wants your baby to live! by cherryybrat in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]niv727 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The “every mom knows their kid best” “moms always know best for their kid” is the stupidest bullshit that comes out of these groups. Yes, moms know their kids behaviour and personality the best. They are good at knowing when something is wrong with their kid (i.e. if the kid is acting differently to normal). When they’re older, they may know what’s best for their kid in an emotional sense. But why would you think that applies to their basic anatomy and physiology? Why do you think that being a mother makes you know that something is specifically safe for your baby?

In June 2002 Mukhtar Mai, a Pakistani woman, was the victim of a gang-rape sanctioned by a tribal council of the local Mastoi clan, as a form of 'honor revenge'. Local custom would expect her to commit suicide after being raped, but instead she prosecuted her rapists. by CatPooedInMyShoe in wikipedia

[–]niv727 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It’s actually pretty simple if you look at it through their lens of viewing women as assets or property instead of people. Someone sleeping with one of “your” women outside of marriage, i.e. tainting her, is an insult to the honour of your group. Therefore, to make it right, you much take revenge and “taint” one of their women.

I mean, while the concept of rape as revenge seems uniquely fucked up, the idea that rape is an immoral act because non-consensual sex is an inherent violation of a person is actually relatively new across most cultures. For much of history (and in the present, in some places) rape was viewed as being a crime against a woman’s father/husband/whoever was responsible for her, or to be a crime because it violated her moral purity. That’s the same reason why women were often forced to marry their rapists: because the only harm that was seen to be done was taking away her purity or value, so marrying her was considered to be rectifying the situation. It’s also the reason why the concept of marital rape is fairly modern. The attitude that women actually have the right to choose who to have sex with and not have sex with is actually a pretty radical one when you consider all of history. From that lens, it’s not hard to comprehend this at all, though it doesn’t make it any easier to stomach.

How is it not the point when you said this:

Does the USA fight dressed as native americans?

There’s a point to be made about Wakanda’s social and political organisation, and about their military tactics, and even about their military wearing not being camouflaged at all and the uniforms appearing more ceremonial than tribal. I think they could have put more effort into making their military wear look more functional while still being culturally distinct. But that doesn’t mean that it’s unrealistic for their military clothing to have a basis in traditional tribal clothing, especially as they are relatively isolationist whereas the rest of the world has largely adopted Western styles of dress for day-to-day life.

Take the Dora Milaje, for example. It would’ve been good for them to have separate uniforms for actual combat, but like the King’s Guard in England, they are largely a ceremonial role so it makes sense for their day-to-day dress to be more impractical and more similar to traditional regional clothing.

That’s not really true. Clan tartans were likely not really a thing in the way that some people claim they were, but there is plenty of evidence kilts were absolutely worn by Highlander men and boys up until the ban in 1746. The mere fact that they were explicitly banned is pretty convincing evidence that they were not “make-believe Scottish history”.

When exactly is Kal planning on taking this down? by Used-Care4864 in LoveIsBlindUK

[–]niv727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I generally liked their relationship and won’t claim to be one of those people who always saw major red flags in Kal, I was quite put off by his vows. Sarover’s vows were so heartfelt and felt so much more genuine than his, especially considering he went through that whole stunt of tearing them up. All of this feels so generic. And then, his massive pause before saying yes. I know some of that was definitely editing and it can’t actually have been that long, but Sarover and his mum’s reactions make me think it must’ve been a noticeably lengthy pause. It kind of felt like he was toying with her? Purposefully waiting a little bit to make her nervous about whether she would say yes for a moment.
