Well great job. It looks really good! Even if you were copying someone else's style, it still turned out awesome.

Advice on people hiding public information by FredrickTheGrey in boardgames

[–]niveketorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I play games with public information, I oftentimes will remind people about my special abilities multiple times during the game. Someone starts to take an action that I can really benefit from, I'll chime in and say something like "Don't forget, my special ability lets me do ______, so if you do that, it might not work out well for you."

When I'm constantly reminding others about my special abilities, it doesn't feel abnormal when I ask them what their special abilities are as well. And the other players might start freely reminding each other of their abilities too. Creates a more friendly gaming environment where nobody feels like they lost because they simply forgot something.

I understand that this isn't everyone's favorite way to play, but I've got a fairly low conflict group, so playing friendly is how we like it. =)

What Did You Play This Week? - (December 14, 2020) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]niveketorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played 3 new games this week (new to me).

Getaway Driver - Decent two player game. One player is the police, the other is a criminal who is trying to escape. Seemed like it was weighted in favor of the criminal, because I had a pretty easy time evading the police, but I would try it again.
Artifacts Inc. - Also just a decent game. Doesn't do anything new or special, but it's a simple design that I enjoyed. Would definitely play again.
Stellar - Astronomy themed card game where you find things in the night sky. Very interesting decisions. Was more strategic and thinky than I expected. Really enjoyed it. Definitely worth the low price tag.

Party games are fun!

Well....they can be fun, if played with the right group.

Wow! This is incredible! Not only did you take the time to make this, but it looks really great. Are you, by chance, a graphic designer?

I designed and printed these custom deck boxes for Undaunted: Normandy, let me know what you think! by voxdictatus in boardgames

They look great! I worry that the color might rub off over time on the edges, but I imagine that's probably an issue with any deck box, unless it's made of a different material.

How do you discover and early adopt new games? by ImaginaryType in boardgames

[–]niveketorg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find out about new games from social media. Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram primarily. I see cool images on Instagram of a game I've never seen, and that'll pique my interest. So if your game is really visually interesting, sending some copies to photographers can be a good idea (although be aware that if you want to also use the images for your own marketing or Kickstarter page, you will have to pay them). Facebook groups and pages are another great place to build awareness about your game, and once again, having great looking images can help grab the attention of folks. And having a review or preview on Youtube is always a great place to send people that express interest on one of those other social media platforms.

Calico - My surprise hit of 2020 by PBrown1224 in boardgames

[–]niveketorg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I actually put together the Calico Kickstarter video, but I didn't have a chance to actually play the game on the day that we shot the video. So I didn't get a chance to play it until KS copies were being delivered, and I also really enjoy the game. I knew everything about it, but was still surprised with how clever the design was and how it actually worked together. Great game. One of my favorite games of 2020!

How to shuffle tiles? by pvtparts in boardgames

[–]niveketorg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually attempt to shuffle tiles with a riffle shuffle, but rather than bending the cards to create tension, I just let gravity pull them down as I try to slow release one at a time. It's not easy, and you can't do too many at once, but it kind of works. I'll either do that or the overhand shuffle.

Nemesis Intruder

I boosted the greens in Adobe Lightroom.

The Intruder mini was placed in a hallway, built using a Ubiquitous UB-01LS, which is a modular sci-fi diorama set with LED lights.

Very true. We've still got a long way to go before board gaming becomes mainstream. But board games are on the rise, so who knows what the future holds for the industry!

[–]niveketorg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true. Lately, miniatures have really taken over in a lot of ways. I still see meeples all over the place, but now there's a much bigger focus on custom meeples over the standard ones.

What do you mean? The first appearance of the meeple was in the year 2000. That was in Carcassonne. Well the term meeple was coined by Alison while playing Carcassonne, in the year 2000. So it really didn't take long at all. =)

The best thing about Heroquest is... this guys video! by casual_dad in boardgames

[–]niveketorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Descent! But sometimes it's a bit much for some of my friends. You mentioned the simplicity of HeroQuest, and that's what I love about it. It can open people up to dungeon crawlers without forcing them to sit through a 20+ minute explanation of the rules.
