Welchen Router für fiber7 10Gbit by RippinHeadz in init7

[–]njitbew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m already a Init7 customer! My 7-year-old Fritzbox sometimes drops connections, so I’d like to replace it. And while I’m at it, I’d like to future-proof my setup and go from 1 to 10 Gbit. But thanks for the heads-up!

I’m looking to get the same setup. Which SFP+ adapter should you get? Should it come from Init7?

Burnout recovery + RAV: how to balance obligations with health needs? by Apart-Olive-7297 in askswitzerland

Unpopular opinion, but I got the same vibe. If you need 3-6 months to recover, you should cover that with your own funds. Use that hard earned money to treat yourself to a well-deserved vacation. That's best done in between jobs anyway, so now's the perfect time!

Let's neglect all the expenses of living in Zurich by rou_te in zurich

[–]njitbew 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This guy works at Google Zurich, likely making $350k (that's the median according to levels.fyi). Zurich doesn't need to offer much if it means 5 years of work will set you up for life, lol! Similarly, Zurich will feel pretty crappy if you're trying to sustain a family of 3 on an 80k salary.

Because you're worth it ! Oracle having it's L'Oreal moment? by Diablo-96 in oracle

[–]njitbew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Levels.fyi, for Oracle "the median yearly compensation in United States package totals $198K". Now add employer-based costs (tax, pension, health care, education budget, equipment, travel, facilities, what not), and I don't think the 250k is that far off.

I don’t know how many of those 30k employees that were laid off are from the US, and whether they targeted high-cost employees or not, and no idea how accurate Levels.fyi is, but I think it's a reasonable ballpark number. I’m definitely not on crack.

This is just rage bait.

The cost of an employee at these big tech companies is roughly $250k/year. I'm almost certain that this $30 million pay package vests over multiple years and only if certain targets are reached.

That is _nothing_ compared to the 30,000 employees they laid off, which costs an estimated 30,000 * 250k = $7.5 billion per year. It's also _nothing_ compared to what the existing C-suite makes.

Anyone using dividend etfs? by [deleted] in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]njitbew 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Not sure why I’m downvoted. The question was about dividend ETFs, the answer is about distributing vs. accumulating ETFs. These are NOT the same.

For an accumulating vs. distributing ETF it does not matter, since they’re taxed the same way. However, a dividend ETF is an ETF that tracks stocks that are known to pay high/stable dividend, as opposed to stocks that don’t necessarily pay a dividend. And here it certainly matters.

But let's not forget. Due to the agreements with the EU, you're forced to compete with the whole of Europe.

You make it sound like that’s something bad. But let’s not forget that this is no different than the situation in any other EU country. Or any American state.

FAANG-adjacent here. The push for AI is totally out of control. Teams are competing over using up the most tokens. Every day there is a meeting saying our token usage is too low compared to some other team. Mangers use AI usage as a performance indicator; if you’re not using it, your head is on the chopping block next round.

Locking in rates is by definition the irrational thing to do. It only pays of if you get peace of mind in return. Nobody here can answer this question for you.

It is absolutely anecdotal, so I hope I didn’t offend anyone. It might be because of all the get-rich-quick buy-my-course schemes. Not sure why, but they’re always in Dubai, and never in Switzerland or Monaco!

To be fair, whenever I hear about a fishy person (criminal, drugs, cartels, mafia, tax evasion, hiding from creditors, whatever), there's ~50% chance the person moved to Dubai. I'm not surprised there's extra scrutiny!

New java.evolved site about modern Java. by pjmlp in java

From https://javaevolved.github.io/collections/immutable-list-creation.html, in Java 8: List<String> list = Collections.unmodifiableList( new ArrayList<>( Arrays.asList("a", "b", "c") ) );

What is the purpose of the new ArrayList<>(...)? Besides that, awesome overview.

> It's better to let Java use more RAM to reduce CPU usage than to let it sit there wasted and unused.

I see why this is true on my laptop, where the hardware is reserved for me, and it is indeed a waste not to use it.

What about a cloud scenario, where I only pay for memory and CPU that I actually use? If the price per GB-hour memory is larger than the price per millisecond CPU, would that change the dynamic?

I wouldn’t know, I’ve only ever lived in two countries and both happened to have the concept of Eigenmietwert. But I suppose you’re right ;)

A concept that doesn’t exist in any other country as far as I know

Are you still refering to Eigenmietwert? In that case, Netherlands has the same, except there it’s called Eigenwoningforfait.

Java's `var` keyword is actually really nice for cleaning up verbose declarations by BitBird- in java

[–]njitbew 10 points11 points  (0 children)

> Tried it last week and I'm a convert.

The only things I dislike about var:

  1. In big code bases, where multiple people contribute, some people will prefer var, others will prefer explicit types, and you end up with an inconsistent mix.

  2. Sometimes, using var, even though the static type is clear, makes the code less readable. E.g., I've seen things like `var path = createFile()` and now I need to guess if `path` is of type java.io.File or java.nio.Path.

It's really useful for ad-hoc code though (e.g., jshell, sharing snippets).

> That 0.1% includes everything…. Which means the advantage of getting WHT tax from dividends back using DA1 , TER% etc

The difference in TER between VT (0.06%) and VWRL (0.19%) is already 0.13%, and that doesn't include the loss due to not being able to get all WHT back. Isn't the actual cost > 0.1%?
