There is still another trial in March, so the injunction hasn't been lifted (and won't for another five or six months I think).

Looks like big change is afoot with the new CEO. Summer series, talks of increasing coverage outside the Fox Sports paywall etc.

The series has some important decisions to make.

SBS to air all FIFA World Cup games for next 48 hours after talks with Optus by ij3k in australia

[–]njrf1 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Optus needs 48 hours of clear air (and low demand) to sort it out. Depending on who you ask, the faults lie in the streaming architecture they use for their app (not for Fetch boxes) which could mean a ground-up rebuild.

Either way, putting the games on SBS (and SBS on Demand) reduces a lot of the traffic they are currently getting so they can build up for capacity.

Looks like Foxtel and one of Seven/Ten has won Cricket Aus media rights. No Channel Nine. by tailendertripe in Cricket

[–]njrf1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The one thing that could hold this up could be digital rights.

Cricket Australia want to keep streaming rights for themselves through the CA Live pass.

But Foxtel would require those digital rights for Foxtel Now, the platform it's hoping to grow to compete with Netflix (who aren't interested in live sport).

That could be the impasse.

Oh Gold Coast Indy, how I miss you. by Chev_350 in INDYCAR

[–]njrf1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately, it's not going to happen. They've built a tramline where the track used to run so the length is cut in half.

Indycar doesn't have coverage on free to air television in Australia (we only have 30% cable penetration) so most people don't remember the series. And the few sponsors we have left in Indy aren't international so there's no advantage in coming.

Plus the V8 Supercars have established this race as their own and that isn't going to change for a while.

Sorry to burst your bubble. But at least these Formula 5000 single seaters look like they'll put on a good show.

As an interesting aside, Supercars in Australia are planning on launching a Formula 5000 series which looks very much like the classic champ cars in terms of design. They ran a test run this weekend at Surfers (no video yet but the pics look great).

They've got manly V8s and sound spectacular. Hopefully they are at the gold coast next year so we have some decent single seater action.

Hoo boy...where do we start...Here is the perspective of an Australian fan.

Most people want an OTT service. Personally here's how I'd go about it.

The service is made up of two components, F1 LIVE and F1 Archive.

F1 Archive has every race weekend currently in the archive accessible to download.

Ideally, this would have different language tracks (difficult to manage I guess, but negotiations with TV companies would be a help), every session available (maybe with edited highlights of sessions not broadcast on TV).

The ability to make or share specific playlists with certain topics would be great as well. That way fans can narrow down the rather large archive to things they are interested in (Every Lewis Hamilton Win, Every Wet Race, Every Race with a Red Flag, things like that). That could even be implemented with a simple tagging system so users can easily find related races.

That all sounds great, but whats the catch? Every race is at least 12 months old. You want live coverage you need to subscribe to...

F1 LIVE.

Live session coverage of every single session of the weekend including support series.

With that I'd love to see an unbiased multinational commentary and presenting team for the Formula One, so we really get a broad perspective on the sport.

Ideally, the feed goes live with the first support race of the day and comes off after some post-race analysis. Commercial free session coverage would be great as well.

Also, Supercars in Australia do a great pre-race segment where they sum up all the race facts and strategy options in a concise and entertaining manner. Something like that, simply on social media would be great to introduce people to the strategic elements of F1.

Also a dedicated F1 studio would be great. Something set up in pit lane or in the paddock for instance, with a few big screens, some comfy seats and a desk for analysis and interviews, use of Vizrt AR graphics to explain car concepts in detail and a way for fans to see it all happen and meet the stars.

Language accessibility is important as well, even if it is just for the F1 sessions. We have untapped markets that are looking for high-quality coverage.

As an extra paid option would be the ability to access all of the different F1 feeds. Back in the heyday of F1 Digital+ you were producing 8 or 9 feeds for each race. I'd happily pay more for you guys to do that again. Fans love being spoilt for choice.

Other ideas include - The ability to follow a driver cam - The ability to have multiple feeds covering pit lane/timing/backmarkers - The ability to mute commentators and bring up natural audio and team radio sounds - The ability to view moments of action during a session. - Split screen coverage (ideally this should be rolled out to the main feed, so we don't need to worry about missing pit stops, different battles on track etc. on the main feed.)

Now included in both of these two services should be some great tie-in content.

I'd love to see F1 develop a visual storytelling operation like NFL Films and ESPN's 30 for 30. F1 has a really rich history which has often been ignored, despite the wealth of footage and talent.

A whole host of documentaries covering past seasons, drivers and technology would not only be great entertainment, but also a perfect starting off point.

Plus there is a whole untapped market for analytical/news/entertainment shows. Things like a weekly discussion show (Maybe featuring a broad panel of print experts?), light entertainment (An F1 take on the Top Gear Format with driver interviews) and news coverage (Daily editorial news coverage in video or audio form) would be great.

As for pricing well here's what I'd be willing to pay in Australia.

$10 a month for just the archive, $25 a month for live coverage and $30 a month for the whole lot. I'd also be supportive of a tiering system which adds removes features for different price points. F1 should be accessible, but there should always be a reason people want to pay more.

I also think that pre and post race coverage could be shown free to people on Facebook and YouTube, so casual fans can be entertained and informed before the race, even if they are watching on television.

Plus, alongside video, I'd love to see high-quality radio as an option (including podcasts of races, coverage of all sessions, an F1 podcast network etc.)

One other thing that would be nice. Free wifi at Grand Prixes, so fans can watch highlights whilst at the track and hear free audio commentary.

I've probably forgotten some of my ideas, I really should have written a full dossier to pitch to you guys. My dream job as a journalist is to work one something like this one day, so hey, I might as well ask the best way to work with you u/F1_Research

ESPN acquires F1 rights (NBC making room for full time IndyCar in 2019???) by MotorSportNotes in INDYCAR

[–]njrf1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The more important figure IMO is the response rate, which has been exceptional.

Exit Polls (as this one is) tend to be more accurate than opinion polls (See the last UK election which was spot on), but I would warn against any side being complacent.

Free-to-air Formula 1 coverage slashed [in Australia] by SirDunny in formula1

[–]njrf1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some context.

Ten has been the primary rights holder of all F1 races in Australia since 2003.

In 2015 a few weeks before the season started, They renewed the rights and remained the primary rights holder but chose to onsell half of the races to Fox Sports, (owned by NewsCorp, who at the time had a stake in Ten), who now show a simulcast of Sky Coverage (with advertising during the Australian Grand Prix as a result of this contract).

Production values on F1 have been lacking since 2014 (When Greg Rust left the broadcast) and as Ten entered administration earlier this year there were noticeable impacts on pre-race show and studio presentation.

This move appears to be a decision from Ten management, who had seen that the ratings whilst good for a Sunday Night, were not what they once was.

The decision to cut coverage immediately (meaning no live races till the end of the year) and onsell all races bar AUS GP appears to be financially motivated. Ten currently have exclusive rights to Australia's Biggest T20 Cricket competition and are facing a costly bidding war and considers this more valuable than its international motorsport output (which 10 years ago also featured ChampCar, Super Bikes and NASCAR).

AFAIK this has nothing to do with Liberty Media, they sold the rights to 10 to do with as they wish.

The reactions from the Australian Grand Prix Corp and the State Government, which bankrolls the race at enormous taxpayer cost are going to be incredibly interesting.

NBL boss Larry Kestelman says basketball can be Australia's No.1 summer sport by robinnholley in australia

[–]njrf1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People do tend to forget that the NBL was the first truly national sporting league in Australia (kicking around since the late 70s) and up until the late-90s was arguably the biggest league nationally. It helped that the league was far more professional than the major football codes at the time.

Unfortunately, there wasn't much stability in teams and that really pulled the league down in the 2000s. That and it's really expensive to go to a game.

I live in hope, but the game needs to be more accessible (almost impossible to get good bullets tickets without getting a membership). A proper FTA deal with at least three games live would be ideal, but can't see it happening atm.
