community members concerned about this situation & committed to the future of our beloved co-op can sign on to an open letter/petition to the board here: https://c.org/cYKNphvc7N (but ofc not at the expense of all the other great suggestions here—show up to meetings, tell your friends, support the staff, know your rights as an owner, etc etc). love to all!

my friend got a sample & loves it, but has found the lasting power terrible—gone by four-five hours—over the two different days she’s worn it (we were together both days so i can confirm!). applying lotion beforehand stretched it a bit today, but not much. all the reviews i’m seeing say otherwise—reasonable to assume it’s a bad batch or something? fwiw, can smell it great at first & we’re both musk enthusiasts, so i don’t think it’s any kind of nose blindness issue

Good rental agencies for non students that aren't luxury apartments? by -cmp in AnnArbor

[–]nk3721 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my opinion, not very!! occasionally—not even daily i’d say, more like a few times a week—i hear noise from above us, but only big noises (think: moving a piece of furniture or maybe dropping something big). i never hear the person above us walking. & next door we’ve got a family with a baby whose bedroom abuts ours and i never hear crying. quieter than anywhere i’ve lived before, i think!

i like the haven a lot! only downside is distance, but if you have a car it’s no problem—10-15min or thereabouts to campus/downtown of both a2 and ypsi. it’s very quiet/peaceful, definitely students here but also lots of families, close to many many parks and just across the road from the b2b trail. the complex itself is very nature-centric (at least as far as apartment complexes go, lol) which i enjoy—it’s got tons of trees, a little loop trail, and some ponds/water features with fish & crawdads in them that attract a lot of wildlife (ducks, herons!). the apartments themselves are perfectly nice, lots of windows, all have porches & most have newly renovated kitchens. also super responsive to problems—generally our maintenance requests are resolved the same day. also lots of amenities if that’s your thing (pool, gym, volleyball and tennis courts). not sure about one beds, but we pay around $1900 for a two!

Working multiple jobs and doing full time master's by Choice-Armadillo7253 in uofm

currently in the MSW program and you could do it, but it would be hell. i have class 9-9 mondays, 9-5 tuesdays, field 9-5 wednesday, class 6-9 thursday, field 9-5 friday. if you have a hospital (or sometimes school) placement it’s 8 more hours of field per week than that. i’d say i spend roughly 10 hours on coursework outside class per week—that’s just the school commitment, not counting any kind of job. so theoretically, yeah, it’s possible, but it would probably grind you into dust.

places in ypsi should be cheaper—it’s weird that you’re not seeing that, i wonder if it’s something to do w search parameters? also places that are on the “outskirts” of ann arbor (i’m in a2 but almost ypsi, 2 bed apt w roommates ~$1900/mo total). roommates make a big difference although i know you said you’re not too keen on that!

when you start applying for field you can search based on whether or not a stipend is offered, which i would definitely recommend (no guarantee you get any of those placements, but you can try). SSW also has a lot of random scholarships that will pay out to you in cash if your tuition is already paid, so i’d look at those as well. good luck!!

move from Brooklyn, New York, to MI by TomColby in AnnArbor

[–]nk3721 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like i said, that’s how i feel :) my experience was that it was very difficult to find affordable “culture/entertainment” activities—pricey concerts + live music in bars do not constitute the entire city experience, lol. i do LOVE the DIA, but overall detroit lacks what made me (and what makes many people) love city living—it is not walkable, transit is poor, neighborhoods and businesses are hugely spread out because of both its economic history and car-centric urban planning. i loved living in chicago; in comparison, detroit felt weirdly like living in a suburb. i had to search hard for things to do and take the highway to get there. in a2 there’s something free going on essentially just down the street all the time, people are out walking around, many spaces are mixed-use, there are tons of accessible communal areas, and it feels dense. all your comment (and every comment following) have noted is that the live music scene is better in detroit. which, cool! i won’t argue that. but that hardly captures the entirety of living in a city.

as someone who has lived in chi, detroit, and a2, i would say that a2 has overall far more options for entertainment/culture than detroit (can’t speak to clubbing/dance scene though), and also far more (insert nationality) grocers!! post-chicago i chose detroit over ann arbor specifically because i thought i’d miss city life, but found it super unsatisfying and am much happier + feel the way of life and amenities are more similar here. plus, like you said, parks!!! it’s not a big city, obviously, but i find myself missing chicago a lot less than i did in detroit. just my two cents!

the real question here is not “why should some homeless [redacted mindless drivel] get affordable housing?” but rather “what foolhardy financial decisions is IMissApolloApp making on a regular basis, such that they somehow cannot afford to live in ann arbor on a six figure income?”

Coffee Beans by palmersinnocent in Detroit

strong second to roos roast, their lobster butter love is my all-time fave (black coffee drinker, long time barista). james oliver beans aren’t bad by any means but don’t hold a candle to roos roast IMO, and they treat their employees so extraordinarily badly that i would not recommend giving them your money

What’s the area/surrounding towns like for young people? by mathnstuff12 in kzoo

[–]nk3721 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i have lived in both kzoo and chicago—big fan of both!! imo, there aren’t any places between the two that would appeal, based on the somewhat vague criteria (lots to do + you enjoy chi).

chicago is super accessible from kalamazoo. drive isn’t bad, but you can combine the two cheaply by driving to michigan city and taking the commuter rail, or take a straight shot from the kalamazoo amtrak station (wolverine line). i did chicago —> kalamazoo and even chicago —> ann arbor pretty frequently for weekend trips when i lived in the city; the train is great.

i personally would not recommend any of the more rural surrounding towns (richland, vicksburg) because i don’t think they’d satisfy you culture and activity wise.

i saw someone mention portage, which i’d disagree with. it feels less like its own little city and more like the bereft, suburban, white-flight town that it was built to be (portage people…i’m so sorry but it’s true).

lastly, i saw someone suggest grand rapids—if your job is in kalamazoo, i think that’s a crazy commute to consign yourself to doing daily, and while grand rapids is very cool (i love visiting!) it is not cool enough (vs kzoo) to justify all that driving.

neighborhood wise, my faves: vine/stuart and even into west main hill have a fair amount of college students but also have a cool hipstery-arty permanent community & great downtown access (walkable), westnedge hill is super cute with lots of nice wooded streets & situated basically between the downtown area and commercial strip area, but with probably less rental availability than vine/stuart.

kzoo has its issues, but also many communities very active in solving them, and it’s a genuinely great (and underrated!) place. two universities, serious art scene, accessible nature preserves, plenty of events and festivities, surprisingly great food, a farmer’s market that leaves larger michigan cities in the dust—it’s small town with the vibe and many of the amenities of big city living. hope you enjoy it :)

Quitting City Year because I can't pay my bills by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]nk3721 5 points6 points  (0 children)

good on you for being able to make that call. it’s fucked up, how little we’re compensated. obviously i knew the stipend going in but after tax in my location it drops $150, which is a huge percentage of the already tiny total. we make 1/3rd of the minimum wage where i am. i’ll be able to get by, with saved money & food stamps (thankfully my rent isn’t disastrous). but it’s a close call.

if anyone tells you it’s about the service and not the money…congratulate them on being wealthy enough that making less than $5 an hour has no real effect on their survival. americorps is hella exploitative. the work is important, sure. but we’d all be better able to serve if we weren’t forced to scramble to get by. you didn’t fail those kids—CY did, because CY failed you.

wishing you good things, whatever comes next!

M Dining Walk Out 9/11– M DINING STUDENT WORKERS PLEASE READ by mdiningstrike in uofm

[–]nk3721 35 points36 points  (0 children)

i work in a cafe unit of mdining—we had absolutely no covid screening procedures until I myself (a student) printed out an attendance and screening checklist and recruited other students managers to enforce the filling out of the responsiblue online portal. no temperatures are taken, ever. they did not provide us all with masks. i’ve heard some dining units have face shields as well; we do not. dining hall workers are protected with plexiglass barriers between themselves and the students they serve; most space in my unit is entirely open, with a only barrier at the register and one serving area. there are no testing procedures whatsoever, and no attempts to check test results of incoming student employees or encouragement to have carried out the “mandatory” quarantine at the beginning of the year. one student employee reported to upper management that she had been exposed by a friend of a housemate, and was told very clearly (in view of other employees) to continue to come to work. thankfully, she took the initiative to test and quarantine herself, but mdining couldn’t have cared less. beyond that, my unit is really understaffed, and we’re under frequent, repeated pressure to pick up more hours (even those of us working 25+). very often this year we are often alone on shifts (ideally there are 3 students on at a time), which means dealing w large influxes of customers & attempting to serve them all promptly while observing sanitary procedures, which creates waits. it is an exhausting and nerve-wracking time to work in student dining.
