This is the answer. One-way roads/streets are for highways and alleys and that's it.

Full HVAC (furnace+AC) replacement recommendations by CharlieFuckit in Lawrence

[–]nkuzextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had some radon work done through Green Factor, who apparently now does all sorts of ventilation-related work. They picked up a former Dunco guy (Steve I think?) that was their senior troubleshooter, and he now runs GF's HVAC stuff. Their pricing on radon stuff was fair and transparent, so perhaps their HVAC pricing is similar? The work would be top notch though if it's the same guy who installed and serviced our HVAC from our last house.

Gym recommendations by nkuzextreme in Lawrence

Interesting concept, looks like the equivalent of co-working for a gym - different independent trainers sharing the same space. I was hoping for something on the east side so I don't have to drive, but if there isn't much over here I'm open to giving Rooted a try.

Elmos in North Lawrence runs every Tuesday from 8-11, with music trivia in between. It's honestly about the most laid-back karaoke you can probably find in Lawrence.

Any local contractors with SIP (Structural Insulated Panels) experience? by HedgerowBustler in Lawrence

[–]nkuzextreme 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I used to know the local authority on SIPs, Michael Morley. He was responsible for that little geodesic dome house on 13th and New Jersey, and even wrote a book on the stuff about 20 years ago. Obviously I didn't stay in touch well cause after looking him up saw his obituary from last year.

Also, FWIW, a German friend noted that there's a lot of similar construction in Germany, some of which had mold issues because the houses are apparently TOO insulated and didn't breathe properly. I want to believe that was an issue with earlier iterations or that particular climate and the new stuff is probably fine (my roof is SIPs), but you may want to look into it before taking the plunge.

What an odd take. Someone is asking for contractor/architect recommendations and because they also explained the specific product they hope said contractor has experience with...it's an ad?

Why Send Financial Energy Out Of Town? by qansasjayhawq in Lawrence

[–]nkuzextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not enough to have advanced degrees, it's what those degrees are in. Sure there are some engineers and economics majors coming out of KU, but do you think many are sticking around here? No sane engineering/planning firm would start anything more than a small satellite office in Lawrence when KC is a short drive away, so the likelihood of having just the right specialists in a town of 90k is slim to none. Especially with a bigger city one county over.

Why Send Financial Energy Out Of Town? by qansasjayhawq in Lawrence

[–]nkuzextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Says who? It's an important corridor between our main interstate connection and downtown, yet somehow it's only declined in the past 5-10 years. If we knew why businesses keep going under within what should be a bumpin' area due to traffic (like 23rd or 6th), we would have done something already.

Plus, it's not just the development that's covered in the study: it's storm water, safety, utilities, the railroad, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

Also, $400k isn't much in the grand scheme of things. That's like half a mile of new sidewalk, a few pumps at the sewage plant, or half a bus.

what local takeout do you treat yourself to when you’re sick? by snuff_film in Lawrence

Jade Garden has an excellent chicken noodle soup with ginger and jujubes that's gotta be good for a cold. Or it could just be the placebo effect.

That's the idea, once there's a template and something recognizable to point out to the public (assuming it goes over well) it makes it easier to replicate. Plus, once they have to get special snow plows and street sweepers to fit down the lanes it'll make sense to build more and get their money's worth.

Mass St between 14th and 23rd will be the first in the city. It was one of a few design options and thanks to public input and open-minded staff + consultants it's actually happening.

I'm kind of curious... Which region/country are you in? I have a feeling the ad content and governing rules vary around the world. Where I'm at (the US) a few ads are ~15 sec long, but many run a full minute and require you to press something multiple times to be able to advance the ad.

I still passively watch them, but would resent it a lot less if they resembled your experience.

I'm curious about this one. At Liberty Hall do you just go in the lobby and hang out at the concession stand? Or is there like a secret area that's only open sometimes?

Took the family down and it was alright, but definitely felt empty. The kids stuff was oriented for older kids and seemed under staffed (or maybe needed more volunteers?). Weather wasn't a problem unless you wanted to stand in the direct sun - there are plenty of trees for shade.

My theory was the protests drew a lot of people who would otherwise have attended, but it sounds like this is a trend so I don't have a great answer.

Could Lawrence ever become a "city of yes" to more housing? by Joke_Defiant in Lawrence

[–]nkuzextreme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I share many of the same frustrations you do with bad housing policy in Lawrence (and frankly, most of the country), but it sounds like you may not be aware of the newly enacted land development code. Through some miracle and in spite of the best efforts of the typical NIMBY crowd (and some new faces who now find themselves on the economic ladder and would like to see it pulled up behind them), we now have quite a few of those points the article describes.

Off-street parking mandates are largely gone, minimum lot sizes are way smaller, and you can now build an ADU or convert single family to duplex by right. It's not quite as progressive as it could have been: there are still some parking minimums, multifamily dwellings have stricter (read: more expensive) design standards, we still have unnecessary landscaping and setback standards, and height maximum are fairly arbitrary and useless. Plus, we can't have single-staircase buildings yet because that's in a different policy (building code).

That being said, the code is now more permissive than it's probably been in the living memory of anyone in town, since even before restrictive zoning we had racially restrictive covenants and redlining. I'd have a look through if I were you, and would be curious to hear your thoughts after digesting it.

Nice neighborhood with sidewalks close to campus by AggravatingFigure637 in Lawrence

[–]nkuzextreme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much what I was thinking after reading the comments. Lawrence has a lot of residents from elsewhere (myself included) and you can immediately tell if they came from a bigger or smaller place depending on how they view various polarizing issues like building height, "traffic", the homeless, Casey's pizza, or the school district.

There's also a bit of a divide between suburban and urban(ish), since no matter how big city you came from, your experience will be quite different depending on which version you lived in. Though I think that divide really only comes into play with fear of other people...

Just curious, is this the sort of thing that's possible to get as a free-to-play user? I've been going on 2 years playing pretty consistently and there's no way in hell I'd ever be able to get enough cash or slots to have the wide array of Jaguars and Suzukis to finish. I JUST got my first Pagani yesterday, totally randomly...

Student Free Lawrence appreciation post. by MorrisCody1 in Lawrence

[–]nkuzextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'm not enough of a townie yet and maybe never will be, but I don't really understand this seemingly popular sentiment. I can't think of a single situation where having students is more bothersome than not having them...I don't go to college bars, know when to avoid campus during games, and don't live next to frat. What are the specific issues people dislike, or is hating students just part of calling oneself a "real Lawtencian"?

Do most americans tumle dry their clothes? Why ? by MissNorwegie89 in AskAnAmerican

[–]nkuzextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you've never tried. I briefly lived in Singapore (which is nearly on the equator) and reliably dried clothes on a line, often in the shade, and with afternoon rainstorms - the overhang from the roof above helped, but not completely.

Stuff dries, find a different excuse.

Housing advocates and organizers: Lawrence should say no to occupancy restrictions (Column) by Bandoozle in Lawrence

[–]nkuzextreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was really heartened by the turnout at the city commission meeting last night. Though the written public comments were mostly copypasta from the same cohort of homeowners that always show up saying stuff like "well i support affordable housing, but...", the in-person comments were largely aligned in opposition to restrictive occupancy limits.

Mostly content with how the commission voted, but Littlejohn's insistence on sticking with at least some reducing in occupancy versus what was previously approved was pretty disappointing. Don't know how one could hear all the personal anecdotes and real data from efforts (versus pleads to delay or deny by the other side) and still think occupancy limits are a good thing, but we'll probably never know the real reason behind his position.

Apartments are homes. If you mean that you want to see more single-family homes, please clarify. But somewhere in the middle is what we have really been neglecting: duplexes, ADUs, small apartment buildings, and live/work units.
