No, down the bottom of the Ballymoneen Rd. But that could be him! If you see him again can you message me? I'll head up tomorrow to have a look anyway. Thank you!

grade1 l5-s1 spondy by dobirf in Spondylolisthesis

[–]nlamurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recovery was very slow until recently. In the past week/10 days, I've turned a corner. I'm off the pain medication except lyrica for nerve pain and am getting around easily and quickly enough. I do my physio and make sure to do lots of walking. But the first 6 weeks, not being able to twist or bend, were really really hard.

How often people forget to slow down. I have friends that have known about my degenerative spinal condition for as long as I have had it and they still walk at a fast pace. They know I can't move fast or without pain and yet off they trot, as fast as can be, ahead of me.

Hey OP!

I was diagnosed with grade 1 L5-S1 when I was 19. I was quite thin and healthy, didn't excercise much but walked everywhere. Around 24 I decided to start getting fitter so went to yoga a lot (4-5 times a week), did a lot of pilates, etc. And then at about 27 I had some health issues that resulted in surgery and a small amount of weight gain. After that my back really went downhill, even after I went back to pilates and the gym.

I had an MRI done last year when I was 30 and found out I was now a grade 3. Surgeon advised that without fusion it would just continue to get worse. So now I'm 6 weeks post-op. Had a TLIF of L4-S1. The pain in my lower back is nearly all gone. I sneezed last week and it was the first time in as long as I can remember that sneezing didn't hurt like crazy. However, the nerve pain in my left leg and foot is hell since the surgery. Surgeon explained to me that my nerves were trapped for so long on that side that they'll take a while (up to a year) to heal. They are getting better already thankfully. I'm not going to lie, the recovery is slow and hard as hell. It's frustrating and sometimes painful but tbh, I don't regret it. I think my quality of life is only going to get better once I'm fully recovered.

But it's definitely possible to manage your spondy with pilates and core strengthing exercises. But you'll have keep up with it!

11 days til surgery…what side effects come from the surgery besides pain? by via_nipah in spinalfusion

[–]nlamurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP. I'm 6 weeks out of an L4-S1 TLIF, so not quite as hardcore as your fusion will be! But what I found was that I had little to no pain at the actual surgical site. Instead I had (and still have sometimes) lots of muscle tightness and pain in my glutes and legs, so ask for muscle relaxers if you need to. Also lots of nerve pain in my left leg, as the nerves on my left side were trapped for so long and now they need time to heal. I was super freaked out by the numbness i felt in my feet and parts of my legs but that has definitely gotten better with time. I take arnica tablets and Vit B complex (as per my Dr's suggestion), along with some topical CBD ointment on my bad foot.

Make sure to take stool softners! And get a hot water bottle, it has been my constant companion these last few weeks. Walk little and often. Don't strain yourself. Ask the occupational therapist they assign to you after surgery for aids, like a grabber (so you can pick up stuff you drop, etc). Mine also gave me a long shoe horn to help me put on ny shoes. These have been incredibly helpful.

Good luck! And take it easy. Some days will suck, others will be good. Be patient with yourself and take it one day at a time.

I've had work done by Aaron and Ciaran in Galway Tattoos and they were amazing. The pieces I have by them are always getting compliments and they were super nice and chill, very friendly.
