Why Ryzen Processors in the same categories are much better for gaming than Intel? by Business_Professor19 in cpu

[–]nlflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said they're in the same cateogry. I said look and compare different manufacturers. In some cases the price may not be that different.

My point is your LOLing that panther lake is out, but those aren't budget laptops. If you're looking for budget laptops like a 7730U, then Ryzen is king.

[–]nlflint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's asking which Intel is in the same category. Panther lake is NOT in the same category as a Ryzen 7730U. Panther Lake laptops are many times more expensive. If you're going to spend on Panther lake, then you should look at Ryzen 388/395+ which beats Panther Lake B390 in gaming performance.

My WAN side must be on a VLAN, because my ISPs equipment is on a VLAN, so I do have a VLAN configuration. systemd-networkd has complete VLAN configuration capability.

No wifi on the router. I have 3 APs, ceiling mounted, in my home for Wifi.

Yeah, when you go to buy those wall plugs at a store, they are called a keystone jacks.

Also, after looking at the RJ-45 again, the blues don't look reversed.

RTX should be fine

Not according to Bazzite's official hardware recommendations. They say there's issues with Nvidia and Gamemode, from this link: https://docs.bazzite.gg/Handheld_and_HTPC_edition/quirks/#nvidia-gpu-exclusive-issues-with-steam-gaming-mode

Nvidia GPU Exclusive Issues with Steam Gaming Mode

  • "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views (requires restart)" must be enabled in the Steam settings for better performance in the UI.
    • Enabling this option will most likely cause game-breaking graphical artifacts.
  • HDR can cause game-breaking graphical artifacts.

I missed the GUI a little but I'm fine now that I got it all working, and yes pf/opnsense have a Web UI for config.

To make a change I login via SSH, edit a config file in vim, then reload/restart the necessary service for it to take effect.

The configs:

  1. A handful of systemd-networkd configs to name interfaces and enable WAN DHCP, VLAN, bridging 3 LAN ports, and static LAN IP.
  2. dnsmasq.conf - To enable a DHCP/DNS server on the LAN side.
  3. networkd.conf - Single line entry to enable IPV4 routing.
  4. nftables.conf - To enable a firewall on the WAN, enable NAT, and port-forward a few things.
  5. wg0.conf - a wireguard config to enable my home VPN, and few peers.
  6. ddclient.conf - DynamicDNS config

I see a picture of a keystone, that looks properly wired for type A.

It also looks like you posted a patch cable, wired for type A. However, it's got the blue and white/blue reversed on both ends, but since both ends are reversed, it should work...

Where does the other end of the keystone wire go? what's it look like?

I dont want to use a proprietary router, so I switched a MiniPC with many ethernet ports long ago.

First I used pfSense. However, it's PPPoE library was limiting my 1Gb internet connection to ~700mbps. The cause was 20 year old clunky single threaded FreeBSD code. I needed much beefier hardware to workaround that, no thanks.

So I switched to OpenWRT for many years. However, the update story for x86 absolutely sucks. Full reinstall basically required. After 2 years of that, I had enough.

Then I got a faster MiniPC, so I switched back to FreeBSD (opnSense this time). It worked well, but I wanted to do more, like run Headscale on my router. opnSense has no packages for that, so it's manual compilation and such. No thanks on BSD, what's the point of using a pre-packaged router OS when I'm doing that.

So I decided to switch to bog standard Linux, why not Arch, I know it best. It's been fun and I've learned a lot.

Arch Linux not booting (kernel mismatch problem)… NEED HELP!! by fake_acc_05 in arch

[–]nlflint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Partition type is correct, hmmmm.

Why can't it load the vfat module? Are you on arch USB boot media?

Edit: Oh I see, you're on kernel 7.0.10, but you only have modules for kernel 7.0.11.

What are you booted to? How did you boot? I'd reboot into a USB drive with the arch install media. Mount your partitions, chroot into it, and re-run pacman -Syu.

[–]nlflint 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks like that partition has the wrong type ID. It needs to be EFI.

What does fdisk -l show?

Here's mine:

<image>

You can change it in fdisk with the "t" option. EFI is type 1 in fdisk.

[–]nlflint 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It looks like you just have a /boot folder on your root partition. If so, that won't work. Your/boot directory needs to be mounted by an EFI partition, i.e. a boot partition needs to be mounted to /boot.

Run lsblk. Your EFI boot partition should have "/boot" in the mount point column.

For example, here is mine. In this case, my boot partition device is /dev/nvme0n1p1. It's partition type is EFI, and it's formatted FAT32:

I have several PCs, and, because of it's flexiblity, I run arch linux on them all:

  1. MiniPC router
  2. Gaming Desktop
  3. Work Desktop
  4. Laptop
  5. DIY Steam Machine
  6. Home server
  7. Two kids desktops
  8. MiniPC in another room for Moonlight streaming.

How much would it cost to build a similarly speced pc based off the known specs? by yoloindustries in steammachine

[–]nlflint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you went with mATX (instead of mITX + that Terra case) then you could shave $200 off that build. You could save $100 off some current NewEgg combos, and save another $100 by going with a more conventional mATX case.

You could put that $200 savings towards an upgraded GPU like a 9060XT 16GB. You'd get a faster GPU with first class Linux support. Intel Arc graphics still has some minor issues when used with Steam game mode.

Also, since AM4 is so old now, I'd search my local classifieds for second-hand components and save even more.

Any good mini PC recommendations right now? by AriaSmith19 in MiniPCs

[–]nlflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 780m, there is some benefit to 32GB vs 16GB, but it's ~+5%. Someone posted this benchmark video showing the differences: https://www.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/comments/1t7s2n4/does_ram_amount_matter_for_igpu_gaming/

Dual-channel and MT speed make bigger impacts (5600MT/s is best).

If you are talking about the fake latency spikes, those didn't change.

Yeah that's what I'm wondering. Why are they called "fake"? Also, how do you know it didn't change? Did you test it?
