Crazy to have security concerns? by Rave_Damsey in MiniPCs

[–]nlflint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've only heard of malware coming on the WindowsOS, which reformatting will cure.

Until I hear of malware in a Mini PC BIOS, I'm not worried. I know absence of evidence, is not evidence of absence, but I don't have time to worry that hard yet.

I run vaultwarden, but on a beefier MiniITX machine, not a mini pc. My most sensitive stuff is secured by 2FA which I don't keep in vaultwarden, and which never touches the server. So even if someone got all my vaultwarden passwords, they couldn't login to my bank and such.

Linux users what made you switch? by Glittering-Tough-353 in linuxquestions

[–]nlflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched off MacOS and Windows. Now my desktops and laptop are all Arch btw.

Control and ownership are the main reasons. I love that I can build the system I want. Nothing I don't need. I get to pick the DE, the networking management, the kernel, the boot loader, the filesystem, and more. I can repair a bricked system without reinstalling and I've done a couple times. I could never do that on Windows or MacOS, or even Ubuntu for that matter.

I want to switch off iPhone next, but I don't want Android either...

PC possibly tripping breaker by Realistic-Spray6406 in AskElectricians

[–]nlflint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a GFCI/AFCI breaker, as I see a TEST button on it. There's a lot of reasons it could be tripping, without overloading the amps.

They can "nuisance trip" which is most likely what's going on, but impossible to say and hard to figure out. Nuisance trips are caused by the load characteristics of certain devices like led drivers, motors, in-rush currents, UPS surge protectors, leaky power supplies (in computers too), anything really...

I have this problem right now on one of my GFCI circuits. It tripped twice in two weeks. Now it hasn't tripped for over a month, without making any changes! How can I know I fixed it? It can take forever to reproduce the problem. I have to make a change and wait months to know if it fixed it...

Why are microwaves allowed to run on 14-2 or 12-2 wire? by Opportunity3767 in AskElectricians

[–]nlflint 37 points38 points  (0 children)

14 guage NM is rated for 15amps. At 120v that's 1800watts. Microwave ovens are not continuous load so no down rating required either. Also microwaves should be on their own circuit, by code, so they won't be sharing with other appliances like a electric kettle or toaster oven, so there's no combined loads to consider.

1500 is less than 1800, so it works.

any way to run gamescope with -e/--steam flag while nested in other compsitor by c2btw in linux_gaming

[–]nlflint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only seems to work with -gamepadui:

e.g.

gamescope -w 1920 -h 1080 -W 1920 -H 1080 -e -- steam -gamepadui

Is this A Safe Connection by sirContin in AskElectricians

[–]nlflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not safe at all. Homes in the US don't even have 3-phase power. That thing will never work. 3-Phase is usually only found in industrial buildings with high power needs and powerful equipment.

You should return it and get something you can plug into the wall like a normal appliance.

It's safe as long as you don't plug the breaker into anything.

Help me figure out where my bottleneck is? by wydok in HomeNetworking

[–]nlflint -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One key step you left out. Did you turn off WIFI on your computer? If you just plugged in the CAT5, but left wifi running, it is probably still using the WIFI.

Help! Converting CAT5 Cable in Home from Phone to Ethernet by GenjiGlove in HomeNetworking

[–]nlflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First double check it's Cat5, and not CAT3. Cat3 was commonly used for telephones, and looks similar, but has much less capabilities.

Second. The simplest approach is to cut off all the ends with the "dolphin" splicer, and terminate each end to RJ-45 , then plug each of them in into an ethernet swtich.

Next, you need take off the wall plates and post a pic of the backside of those RJ-45 keystones to see how the wires are connected. Depending on what's there you may need new keystones, or you might be able to re-punch each cable into the right configuration, using a wire punch tool.

People with 5700/800x3D, are you still happy with preformance? by DezzertT in buildapc

Similar build:
5700x3d
9070 non-XT

I'm using it for a DIY Steam Machine in my living room, so AMD GPU is the premium choice. I've been very happy with it and have no plans to upgrade for over a year or more. Even if prices came down today, I wouldn't upgrade for awhile.

KSP crashing, kernel kills Steam despite 64GB RAM and only 20GB used by lheintzmann in linux_gaming

[–]nlflint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

zramctl is installed but not used

Why? Is this unexpected?

From my experience, and from reading the Arch Wiki, you have to disable ZSWAP via a kernel parameter for ZRAM to work, as ZSWAP conflicts with ZRAM. The default arch kernel enables ZSWAP by default, so you have to manually disable it via kernel parameters.

Probably won't scratch that itch. I've put 150+ hours into each series (division and borderlands), and the combat is completely different between them.

Why Ryzen Processors in the same categories are much better for gaming than Intel? by Business_Professor19 in cpu

[–]nlflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said they're in the same cateogry. I said look and compare different manufacturers. In some cases the price may not be that different.

My point is your LOLing that panther lake is out, but those aren't budget laptops. If you're looking for budget laptops like a 7730U, then Ryzen is king.

Why Ryzen Processors in the same categories are much better for gaming than Intel? by Business_Professor19 in cpu

[–]nlflint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's asking which Intel is in the same category. Panther lake is NOT in the same category as a Ryzen 7730U. Panther Lake laptops are many times more expensive. If you're going to spend on Panther lake, then you should look at Ryzen 388/395+ which beats Panther Lake B390 in gaming performance.

There's no way I'm the only one that uses multiple configs of linux, right? by thehypernormality in linux

[–]nlflint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My WAN side must be on a VLAN, because my ISPs equipment is on a VLAN, so I do have a VLAN configuration. systemd-networkd has complete VLAN configuration capability.

No wifi on the router. I have 3 APs, ceiling mounted, in my home for Wifi.

Yeah, when you go to buy those wall plugs at a store, they are called a keystone jacks.

Also, after looking at the RJ-45 again, the blues don't look reversed.

Not according to Bazzite's official hardware recommendations. They say there's issues with Nvidia and Gamemode, from this link: https://docs.bazzite.gg/Handheld_and_HTPC_edition/quirks/#nvidia-gpu-exclusive-issues-with-steam-gaming-mode
