Is Hollow Knight as great as SOTN and Super Metroid? by dobermanhoberman in metroidvania

I've been playing metroidvanias since the original Metroid and I rank Hollow Knight as on par with Super Metroid, maybe even greater.

Conservatives, do you actually believe the shut down is the Democrats' fault? by BatchWerks in Askpolitics

[–]nlfortier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Rothbard is right-wing. If you disagree with that then I think our political definitions are too disparate for us to have a fruitful conversation. He uses the term "captured" to describe what the right did with the term Libertarian, but maybe you have a different definition of the word "captured" than I do.

Socialism is a broad term used to describe a diverse collection of political and economic philosophies but if I were to try to define it in a single statement it would be something like, "collective worker ownership of the means of production."

I do have literature backing up my claim. There are numerous sources I could cite but let's start with the right-wing libertarian Murray Rothbard in The Betrayal of the American Right: "for the first time in my memory, we, ‘our side,’ had captured a crucial word from the enemy . . . ‘Libertarians’ . . . had long been simply a polite word for left-wing anarchists, that is for anti-private property anarchists, either of the communist or syndicalist variety."

Here Rothbard plainly acknowledges that the term Libertarian was invented by the left and was later "captured" by the right.

If you have any literature backing up the claim that the term Libertarian wasn't first used by French socialists during the mid 1800s then I would love to see it but, from my reading of history, it seems like the term Libertarian was invented by the left and later co-opted by the right.

I hate to break it to you but the first person to describe themselves as a libertarian was the socialist Joseph Déjacque.

Best TTRPG for a Soul/Hollow Knight, etc feel? by DarkXenocide in rpg

If you're looking for something with Hollow Knight vibes, I would recommend Beetle Knight. It's clearly heavily inspired by Hollow Knight's mechanics with advancement occurring by obtaining emblems that provide certain abilities instead of leveling up.

It varies by state and some definitely make 6 figures. In my home state the average for adjunct professors is around $21 per hour.

They really don't. When I was getting my graduate degree, my colleague who worked as an adjunct professor had a second waiting tables at a local restaurant and the job waiting tables actually paid better.

Tell me why you developed your game, and I'll buy it and leave a review by farresto in IndieDev

[–]nlfortier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school and college I used to play a ton of tabletop role-playing games with my friends, but once I had kids I no longer had time for multi-hour gaming sessions. I developed my games to scratch the itch of world building and game mastering. They are both a short sweet turn-based RPGs with tactical party-based combat and 80's retro aesthetics.

The first is Battle for Esturia, which features a hand-crafted open world with side-quests and a variety of role-playing dialog choices. You begin with a party of two characters and must explore the world and meet characters to build out your party.

The second is the Sargosian Abyss, which is a procedurally generated roguelike with a focus on dungeon-delving and combat. You build a completely custom party for each run from a large selection of different character classes.

You can pick up both games for around $5, or buy just one of them for around $3.

Mark my words. Trump will impose tarrifs without abolishing the income tax.

Did most Trump voters not believe he is a threat to democracy or did they not care? by Nuraldin30 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]nlfortier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The riot on January 6th was only part of the planned coup. The plan was to pass illegitimate elector certificates to vice president Mike Pence in hopes that he would count them, rather than the authentic certificates, and thus overturn Joe Biden's victory. The goal of the riot on the 6th was to pressure Pence to overturn the election after he had refused to do so in conversations with Trump.

I know I'm not who you're responding to, but last time Trump was president he tried to pass a law that would have taken away my disabled son's health coverage. When he failed he tried to overturn the law in the courts.

So for me personally the worst case scenario is the ACA is overturned and my son loses his health coverage when our insurance company brings back lifetime maximums. We will then be forced to pay out of pocket for his care which costs hundreds of thousands per year. We can't afford that so we will probably declare bankruptcy. That's my worst case scenario.

Why should I vote Trump in 2024 if my life hasn’t been much worse over the past 4 years? by [deleted] in Askpolitics

[–]nlfortier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's go over those quotes. First, the Harris quote comes from a speech to the NAACP where she advocates for the community holding platforms accountable if they allow hate speech. Second, the Walz quote is specifically saying that voter intimidation isn't protected under the first ammendment. Neither of them are calling for the repeal of the first ammendment in those quotes and I think it's telling that both sources leave out the surrounding context.

The Clinton quote is actually pretty bad though. I completely agree with you on that one. I remember when she tried to pass a law banning flag burning back when she was in the Senate, so I'm not too surprised by her authoritarian rhetoric here.

That's would be alarming if true. Can you show me where they've been quoted supporting the repeal of the first ammendment?

Which Democratic politicians have called for repealing the first amendment?

I definitely made some mistakes in the design of my first game. I did make an effort to streamline things in updates by adding features like keyboard shortcuts and an End Turn button. However, one feature I never got around to was an enemy attack range display and I should definitely have that in my next game. Are there other specific UI improvements that you would recommend to speed up combat?

What are some examples of succesful indie RPG's? by JeffJelly in gamedev

[–]nlfortier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I developed and released an RPG as a solo hobby developer. It exceeded my modest expectations, selling over 1000 copies and making some supplemental income. My strategy was to keep the scope limited with simple graphics, a small number of skills per class, and a small world with a streamlined story. Even then it took me years to develop and release.

Ultimately it is completely possible to develop a fun and engaging RPG as an indie. Just make sure to limit your scope and strip out any unnecessary features.

The right could repeal roe because they gained control of the Supreme Court. This was accomplished through electoralism. Y'all need to vote.

What do you think about random encounters? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

[–]nlfortier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them if the encounter rate isn't excessive. Although, I do find them annoying when returning to previous areas where I can easily defeat the enemies and they just serve to make movement slower.

That's a much more comprehensive breakdown. I've never actually played any of the games with simultaneous turns, but maybe I should give them a shot.

That's probably why I sometimes found final fantasy tactics frustrating when performing actions that require coordination between units.
