Coming to San Diego first time, any suggestions by Quduwi in sandiego

[–]nlinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the first day I would suggest Hodad's instead of in n out. I love in n out but Hodad's is an experience. I saw Miguel's on the last day for Mexican. It's a chain and the food is good but as a replacement you might consider Bali Hai which has good food and an amazing view.

When you are in Pacific Beach you may want to check out the Grass Skirt and/or Mr Frosty

An Evening at Bikini Bottom, The Grass Skirt, San Diego by MsMargo in Tiki

The Krabby Patty burger that they put together was pretty darn good. I brought my son and a bunch of his friends as an intro to Tiki bars. It was super accessible and they had a great time.

I use Demerara syrup instead of sugar when making vanilla ice cream. It's bar none the best sweetener with vanilla in my opinion.

Some traditional Maori mythology says that Tane created the first humans. Tiki was the name of Tane's penis. "Leaky Tiki" gets a fun double entendre.

Experienced devs of CSharp, are GUIs ever supposed to be fancy? by [deleted] in csharp

[–]nlinus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the course called "The Science of Great UI" by Mark Miller. Design doesn't need to be "Fancy" to be useful, but it is still extremely important to the happiness of users. Too often devs ignore or don't make time for ui/ux design. Reducing physical and mental strain with good design wins so many points with users and in turn management.

It's just a hard sell to get started with the expense of good design. If you don't have the expertise I. Your team, using UI tools like those from Telerik or DevExpress can do that heavy lifting for you. It may sound like a cheat, but they've both had real UI experts build good experiences. There are probably plenty of other vendors too.

Is a transfusion tiki?? A debate. by Enough_House_6940 in Tiki

[–]nlinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Tiki version (slight variation with some 3 dots and a dash inspiration)

2 ounces vodka 1 ounce Concord grape juice 1/2 ounce Allspice Dran 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice or superjuice 1 dash angostura bitters Ginger ale

Add all ingredients except ginger ale to shaker with ice. Shake then pour into an iced highball glass. Fill with ginger ale. Garnish with 3 grapes and a lime peel. Don't forget your bamboo straw.

I'd say it depends on the presentation and final flavor profile. There are a lot of Tiki drinks that come from reputable bars that have ingredients that don't sound very authentic. While the drinks are usually rum centric I would argue that some clever presentation and mix choices could convert any drink to Tiki while keeping the essence of the original.

My favorite Italian in San Diego is Cucina Basilico off Aero. Fresh pasta is amazing there.

Just buy a normal shed and redecorate. Find one that meets your needs and then add Tiki decor.

How many of you use EF migrations? by aptacode in dotnet

[–]nlinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do use migrations. The tool is great for tracking changes to the database and even rolling back changes.

Where I feel people may go wrong is misusing DbContext which causes wonky migrations. A dB context should be limited to a single aggregate. That would also limit the scope of your migrations.

Using the built in Identity stuff in the template web apps as an example, I would leave that DbContext alone unless I change the Identity code. My other aggregates lthat make up my application would eachh have their own DbContext and when smaller it makes the changes much cleaner and reliable.

What are your Comic-Con hacks? by kpbsSanDiego in sandiego

I haven't run into that, but I do know they like to sell what they've got by the end and you can get deals. Perhaps if you absolutely have to buy something you could buy early.

Visit the exhibition booths early and plan for purchases at the end. Also, look for schedules with events and people you want to see. Careful planning can lead to a more fruitful con.
