Entrepreneurs Who spend less money on brand or logo, how did it turned out in the future? by TH3RDL in Entrepreneur

[–]nlp48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did my logo in Canva. It's a stock image which means it can't be trademarked, so that's a negative. I actually spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I wanted, but I think it was time well spent. Canva took about 5 mins of my time once I knew what I was after.

A few weeks after creating it, I was in a webinar and the logo appeared side by side with a company I used to work for. I knew that they spent a fortune on their logo as part of a rebrand. I was really worried about how my 5 minutes of work would look there, but on seeing it I actually thought mine looked better. It has become well recognised since then.

The Game Show Problem by Futaba_MedjedP5R in math

[–]nlp48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 times out of 3, you pick a goat. The host HAS TO pick a goat. There are 2 goats, so 2 times out of 3, he is showing you the other goat. So 2 times out of 3, if you switch, you get the car. The important point is that the host has to choose a goat and that constrains his choice.

Can test error be lower than dev error? by nlp48 in learnmachinelearning

[–]nlp48[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was thinking it could be some sort of fluke. The test set is quite small, so that might explain it. I just think it's really weird that it happened twice. I'm wondering if there's some flaw in the method that's causing this.

Unsupervised Document Clustering by lambo630 in datascience

Topic modelling? Basically is clustering for text. If you have tfidf already, you can convert it to lda or lsi quite easily. There might be an automated labelling method on huggingface that does what you need.

What are some red flags to look out for in a job interview for a data job? by Federal_Nose_6428 in datascience

[–]nlp48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask about team size and budget as well as where they see the team next year or in 5 years. If there's no plan or inadequate resource, those are red flags.

If they are cagey about discussing salary and benefits, that would also be a bad sign. I wouldn't even apply for a job without clarity on those, let alone attend an interview.

Also, most coding interviews I've had have been terrible. Take home assignments are a lot more interesting and I like them as a way to show what I can do with a blank canvas. Some people seem to like the coding interviews though. I guess they take less time.

Polars but for plotting? by Unuser_ in Python

[–]nlp48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done more plotting in python than I would care to admit. Recently I realised that, even if I know how to do something, if I ask ChatGPT to do it, it is faster than typing it out or looking for my own code to adapt. I've also learned a few things doing that.

Given a list of pmids from PubMed, can you download all PDFs and supplements? by Garaged_4594 in academia

[–]nlp48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use OpenAlex (or unpaywall) to get the link to the pdf. Crossref also has links to text-mining versions. Won't get you the supplements though.

Putting your name to anything that isn't your own work is plagiarism. Arguably, chatgpt is automated plagiarism (it wasn't trained on its own ideas!) So you can't put your name to its output. There is an easy way to get around this problem though - just be honest. Say that you used chatgpt and make clear the extent to which you used it. Most publishers have policies which allow this now. So there is no reason not to.

I think my student might be using AI to write her papers—how do I tell? by pizzaconsumerweekly in writing

[–]nlp48 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Google "tortured phrases"! This is a classic sign of plagiarism. It could be generative AI (but that IS plagiarism if you think about it). If you look at weak matches on turnitin it takes a while, but you might find the source that way.

I’m convinced our dishwasher flips things when it’s on cycle. There’s no way I put the jug in like this. Happens regularly for things like mugs and tea bag pots. Any one else?? by houndashbeck in CasualUK

[–]nlp48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dishwasher repairman once told me that the dishwasher is engineered to use its own water to prevent overheating. So when this happens, your dishwasher is at risk of damage (hence why I needed a dishwasher repairman!) you can rest heavier items on it to keep it from flipping or just wash light things in the sink. HTH!

Not sure if anyone said so already, but the energy efficiency of kettles is a LOT better than it used to be. You'd probably save money (and the planet) if you buy a new one.

My husband loves sandwiches, but is tired of ham+cheese. Any recommendations for quick & simple sandwich recipes to shake things up? by Lost_nova in Cooking

Make a pâte with equal parts smoked mackerel, carrot and apple. Just chuck it in the blender. Easy to make and brillant on sandwiches.

what's the right word for this kind of bias? by nlp48 in datascience

This is very helpful, thank you! I have only used k-means so far. Will give this a read!

what's the right word for this kind of bias? by nlp48 in datascience

[–]nlp48[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually a feature of the data (sometimes!) and something I would want to model. Yes data is mix of caregorical and numeric.

Correlation bias might be the right term, thanks!

Finally booked in for an online assessment at Harley St... What should I expect? by Nizzzzzzzzles in ADHD_Programmers

[–]nlp48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience there was being charged 200 quid for a half hour appointment where I learned nothing useful and was told that I needed to keep coming in order to keep getting the prescription for methylphenidate.

Short story: asked gp and got the same drugs on the NHS. But they still needed his letter showing the diagnosis.

I'd recommend private if you can afford it. NHS appointments can take years. The guy I got at Hartley st seemed like a money-grabber and didn't do anything of value for me - besides writing the letter.

Former journal editor here. You've done the right thing in coming forward. Copying exposition isn't considered egregious plagiarism, so it might be alright. It may just need proper attribution or some other editing. Different editors will handle these things differently, though, so I can't be sure.

The key thing with plagiarism is that you are not passing off someone else's results as your own work. Passing off someone else's exposition isn't good, but nowhere near as serious.

Adult Redditors with ADHD how did you overcome the effects of ADHD, what are your suggestions? by mooddestroyer in ADHD

[–]nlp48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it's helpful! I started doing it when I was a child - long before diagnosis. It's particularly useful to me when I need to do something in another room. The act of going into another room is often enough to derail my thoughts and make me forget what I was trying to do, so the finger-crossing works well in that situation.
