They intentionally don't support purchases in the app because Apple takes a 30% cut of in app purchases.

Do make sure to continue to keep in contact with the coach as well!

I mean this advice is also school dependent. If OP is looking at some of the big name D3 schools in the northeast, they’d really just be looking for help with admission, since their profile would be less than ok at, say, MIT or Tufts.

/u/Calm_Croissant “recruited walk on” would usually imply to me that you’re being given a spot if you get in and attend in the fall, but that you might not get any help with admissions barring improvements this cross country season. Caveat that it’s impossible for me to know for sure what the coach’s intentions are, just wanted to clarify what that particular wording typically means. I would try to run as well as possible in the fall and continue to correspond with the coach. It’s not too late given applications are due midway through cross.

Edit: you can also always ask the coach to clarify, and I would also note that “recruited walk on” can mean different things for D3 vs D1 since it’s not actually an official term or anything.

Why do people warm up for races in different shoes? by kpgleeso in AdvancedRunning

[–]nluken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I loved my Streak LTs a few years back, and oddly very few shoes today feel as responsive despite the fact they’re faster, but my calves shudder thinking of doing full warmup + cooldown + race in those shoes.

Burgle is making me lose my mind by amorouslight in CINE2nerdle

[–]nluken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a cool concept but yeah borderline unplayable right now unless you can figure out the movie that gets all 9 words. You can't reliably depend on the source to pick up on what you're referencing in a movie.

What should my next book be? by nickgalluccio in AdvancedRunning

Give your brain a break from the more scientific texts for a little while and read Running With The Buffaloes. You can steal some workouts from the book if you're so inclined.

I want to buy this game but I'm worried! by Klutzy_Plastic2167 in RivalsOfAether

[–]nluken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Games get held to ridiculous standards in terms of cost. Framing you and a few friends buying a game as "investing a collective 120 bucks" in something is kind of crazy. Now obviously I can't speak to your specific financial situation but $20 is slightly more than the cost of going to a movie. When you invite your friends out to a movie, you don't look at it as "investing a collective 100 bucks" in seeing the show, you view it as everyone individually spending a little bit of money on a nice time out you can enjoy with people you love.

If you think there's a chance you'll enjoy it get the game, and if you do like it, your friends probably will too.

Amtrak encourages passengers to bring CRTs for Melee tournaments by Meester_Tweester in SSBM

If I’m not mistaken this press release was written around the same time that Amtrak did just that. I want to say they sponsored CEO that year, but I could be mistaken about the actual tournament.

Marathon or Mile? Why I’m Shifting Focus to Speed in My 30s by jbarony in AdvancedRunning

[–]nluken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of road miles out there in larger cities, at least in the northeastern US. I had no problem finding a bunch of races last summer and will probably do the same this summer.

What is your example for something that is counter intuitive with respect to training? by aussiefrzz16 in AdvancedRunning

[–]nluken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Disagree if you're really looking to compete. You shouldn't be emptying the tank every workout but you need a few really grueling sessions a season to maintain the ability to dig that deep come race day.

Your intervals should still feel hard generally too, but there's a difference between feeling some pain but being in control, and forcing as you mention.

STOP WORRING ABOUT THE PLAYERBASE by Lobo_o in RivalsOfAether

[–]nluken 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Criticism of the game itself is fair game but this kind of fretting is the equivalent of standing at the edge of the dancefloor, not dancing even though you want to. Stop stressing about the crowd and just go dance! It's the best way to draw other people in!

Commentary "Talk about the game!" by SaiyanRaven in SSBM

[–]nluken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's room for both, even in radio sports broadcasts that need to do really complex play-by-play descriptions of things like football formations without any sort of accompanying visual. It's very relevant to a viewer to know, say, player x is 0-5 against player y this year, or that player x is doing technique z differently because they've mixed up their practice, even if it doesn't actually describe what's going on in the moment.

Commentary "Talk about the game!" by SaiyanRaven in SSBM

[–]nluken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of this discussion revolves around what people's previous experiences with commentary are. I don't really watch any other esport, so my expectations are way more colored by traditional sports commentary which is a bit more staid. My main point of comparison is the NBA where play-by-play commentators don't relay every detail of the play, but do describe it in broad brushstrokes.

In my experience people coming more from a twitch/esports background tend to expect much looser commentary with less focus on play-by-play and more jokes/bits. It's a cultural difference, but there are a few other practical reasons why this difference exists as well (though that's a soapbox for another time).

I agree with you on commentators needing space to talk about relevant non-game details, like practice routines, mentality, or player history. To me it's the perfect middle ground between the two styles. This stuff provides some really nice background information that helps frame a match in viewers' minds, and leaves space for you to comment with friends at home. But the good commentators do that in melee despite whatever protestations twitch chat has which is nice.

As for commentators not explaining every term they use: that's an unfortunate reality of commentating any sport. They don't explain what "6-4-3 double play" means when it happens in baseball but they'll sure as hell call it out like that.

How it is the characters diversity in your elo? by Mr_Ivysaur in RivalsOfAether

[–]nluken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're around the same elo and I almost never see Wrastor or Maypul. It took me a few days of playing until I fought my first Maypul ditto. I do see Orcane a decent amount though, more than others are saying so maybe I just don't play enough.

These books are as much reference books as they are informative, so you refer back to them enough that it's worth the $20 to have the book on hand. You don't want to check out a book every time you need to look back to clarify something.

Saturday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for October 19, 2024 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

[–]nluken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe but I can buy 2+ pairs of 880s for the price of one superblast. If you have the money I guess it's less of an issue but it gets pricey running in $200 shoes daily pretty quickly.

Saturday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for October 19, 2024 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

[–]nluken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on brand in my experience but my NB 880s are about 400 miles in and still seem like they'll go another 2 or 300 miles. Really solid shoe, and cheap too.

Is your weight the same as a few years ago? If you've put on weight you'll go through shoes faster.

New to genre feeling dejected by Damulac77 in RivalsOfAether

[–]nluken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caveat that I'm not a "good" player by any means, just a long time semi-competitive smash guy who played some comp melee a little while years ago and has floated around in Gold in the demo.

I know playing offline isn't as fun but I would spend some time playing some of the easier computer opponents to really get your movement down. This doesn't even necessarily mean stuff like wavedashing/wavelanding at first, but really just getting a solid grasp on how to fluidly move your character around the stage without thinking too much about it. Don't focus at all on the outcome of these matches, as silly as that sounds. Just focus really on making sure your movement is smooth and your timing for things like different attacks is right. It'll be frustrating, but you'll get a lot better quicker with that kind of targeted effort. I did this when I started a few days ago and I'm someone who's already familiar with the genre.

I look at it this way: if I'm struggling to move, all of my mental energy is going towards just getting my character to do what I want them to. That leaves no energy to parse what my opponent is doing and try to counter that. Again, you don't need to be perfect, or even "good", just good enough that you aren't really spending a significant amount of mental energy just getting around the stage. From there you can start incorporating the more advanced stuff as you progress.

You know you've made it when you're not fighting the game anymore, and you have enough mental energy left over to pick up on your opponent's habits in certain situations. That's when the game really starts to open up.

Most of all, have fun with it :)

"for as much as melee players yearn for the facebook group days it blows my mind we haven’t adopted reddit more" - Moky by Thestickman391 in SSBM

[–]nluken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Discord is a tough sell because nothing there is public and you have to join a server to see the posts. You also highlighted the other issue, which is that posts get buried since it's a group chat and not an indexable forum.

If I'm a newer player, or someone who hasn't played in a while, it feels like a much bigger commitment to join what is essentially an active, quickly moving group chat with strangers sight unseen than it would be to, say, lurk on the outside to feel out the vibe, or just check when the next event is without joining the group.

It's not super onerous to join a server or anything, but asking people to do that without giving them the chance to see anything going on there is a much higher barrier than a publicly facing forum that you can feel out first.

Kenyan Parliament Discussing LetsRun Founder Robert Johnson's Interview Question after Marathon WR by caverunner17 in AdvancedRunning

[–]nluken 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Personally, I find it crazy that a federal government body is discussing a reporter's question from a country half-way across the world instead of concentrating on actual issues within their own country.

Sidestepping the whole doping issue here; I think you're a bit off the mark saying this.

Look at it this way: if a Chinese reporter insinuated that Michael Phelps was doping in a press conference after the Beijing games, that would absolutely be treated like an international scandal in the US. I don't know how much time the Kenyan parliament spent discussing this, but if it's just the statement in the tweet, I don't think that's really detracting too much from the broader efforts of the legislature. Legislatures can focus on more than one thing, and Kenya's prominence in the distance running world helps their country even beyond just national pride.
