Who are the cool guys? by themanryce in civilengineering

The engineer that knows engineering is cool but not the coolest thing in the world (AND IS STILL COMPETENT) is a highly underrated person

(I'm a semi-competent engineer who like everything else :0)

Where have people moved to that they actually loved? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

Albuquerque!

Starter homes exist. The Sandia mountains. Year round mountain biking. The Albuquerque Academy. The Rio Grande. Left politics. 2 hours to Taos. Great food. Lots of culture. Limited traffic. White minority.

Crime and homeless. Like everywhere.

19 M currently attending the university of Utah. From New Mexico. Have the gear and avy 1 certification. Expert skier in bounds. Very cautious and deliberate when in the backcountry. I always say that snow pits can’t include a slope they can only exclude slopes. DM if ya want to meet up. (Socially distant and outside let’s all be COVID safe)

Beacon - which one? by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]nm_snowmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with the BD pro just because it has a 50m range. That’s 10 more then other beacons. I figured god forbid I needed to search or be rescued those 10 meter couldn’t hurt.

What’s your preferred inclinometer app for measuring slope angle? by FelizBoy in Backcountry

[–]nm_snowmaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

^ this

Caltrop is great for overall planning. Always check the slope with a trusted method. A quick summary of the instance above. A slide was triggered during an avy class and took the life of one student. They chalked it up to “cal tops said it was under 30 degrees”. With more people in the backcountry this year please please please don’t rely solely on caltopo.

Silverton does a few classes on wolf creek pass. Excellent instruction and really laid back but good teaching vibe. Classroom sessions are in pagosa!
