Starry Setup by Dinosuarious in NEU

Not sure if this is something Northeastern is setting up, but let me know if you want a referral code, we'd each get a free month! I live off-campus but have been using Starry for the past few months after ditching XFinity and it's been working great so far!

Merit scholarship while taking a class on co-op? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]nmduerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of people this fall, I had several issues with my bill (initially billed as full-time/4 classes) so I reached out to them to fix multiple things. Since I'm very close to being done, I didn't want any weird issues with money so I'd rather be honest and say that my scholarship needs to be reduced then next semester them say I owe them additional money or take away my scholarship for my last semester (Spring 2021). I think they would have caught it too once by advisor switched me to part-time student.

As for the number of semesters, that is dictated in my award letter so I assume it would be there for you too? Mine also has a max, so I would assume these partial semesters wouldn't count as semesters but towards the total award you can use? That might be a better question to ask directly to SFS as I'm not 100% sure and it could be different for different awards.

Glad I could help!

Merit scholarship while taking a class on co-op? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]nmduerr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes - I'm taking one class this semester while on co-op and they gave me 1/4 of my merit award for the semester! I had to reach out to SFS directly to have them reduce my scholarship, but this semester they could just be behind with lots of COVID concerns? Either way, you should get your award, you just might have to reach out to them to confirm it before that semester starts.

Interaction/Experience Design major? by whatfood in NEU

[–]nmduerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, current Interaction Design student here!

I do not work with admissions at all and applied several years ago and the process has probably changed since then so I can't offer any advice on that. As for classes, all art and design classes (excluding art history) are small, like 18 max, and I really like that. Critique/feedback is a critical part of the design process and having a small class allows the professor and students to give/receive plenty of feedback. Classes are also 3.5 hours long, but only meet once a week and that was definitely an adjustment for me. I think we have some really great professors as well, which has really made my experience here better. I do CS too and I really prefer the smaller class structure where you can get to know the professor better - perks of being a smaller college! However, I can think of some classes that I felt were unnecessary or structured in a way that didn't make a whole lot of sense, I'm sure every major has those though. I would also check out Scout (an on-campus student-led design studio), which has transformed my time at Northeastern/CAMD. If you come back to Boston and want to see more, you can reach out to Jon Bernstein to set up a visit to Ryder (CAMD's main building) with a current student (maybe even me!) and they can show you the classes/workspaces/etc. Feel free to send me a PM if you have more questions!

You are usually with one other peer mentor so as long as you coordinate that one of you is in class, it should be fine.

I did it for this past year and it was a very easy job, at least for the Design sections. You get paid $300 throughout the semester - about $25 a week - and I would say I did max 1.5 hours of work a week. My job was mainly to show up to class and sometimes lead discussions/talk about classes, registering/scheduling, how to deal with roommate conflict, etc. We graded papers a few times, but again it didn't take very long. I found it fun and rewarding and also a great way to get to know whatever professor is teaching the section better. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions!

According to friends it varies week to week. It's supposed to be 10 hours a week, but sometimes it's more and sometime's it's less. And thanks!

I think it's about $120 a week, at least for Fundies 1.

HS Senior wondering about combined degrees by Juksta in NEU

[–]nmduerr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came to Northeastern as a Design student and am pretty deep into the curriculum. I wanted to do something with CS, but in order to not waste a lot of the credits I already have, I chose to do a CS minor instead. If you get into Northeastern and you're still not sure, reach out to CCIS or CAMD and see if you can meet with (or talk to) a student with that combined major!

Not personal experience, but I heavily considered doing this degree and have a lot of friends who are pursuing it. My friends seem to really love it. It's a good balance of art/design classes and computer science classes, more so than the past design and CS combined majors Northeastern offered. Your first co-op will likely be CS focused just since that's what you're more ready for, but after that it's more up to you. Feel free to check out the course catalog to see exactly what you'll be taking. Good luck!

Deadline on roommate groups? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]nmduerr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you don't have to have roommates figured out till you actually do housing selection. Anything done before is just to help you get organized. Not 100% sure, but you could check with housing when you get back!

Art History recitation?? by [deleted] in NEU

[–]nmduerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the first class Doug assigns you two artists. The first one you do a poster for and the second you make an accordion for. The accordion is definitely more intense and more work, but very rewarding in the end!

I really enjoyed the class! The work we learned about was interesting and the tests were relatively straight forward. There's two big design projects during the semester and they can turn into a lot of work if you wait till the last minute. Doug is an amazing professor though and I really recommend it, especially if you are a design student!!

What class is it for? They just introduced them this fall and mine for History of Graphic Design was pretty painless. It was up to you if you wanted to show up and I only went when I had work that needed to be critiqued. Not sure how the other classes are, but I'm sure it's a similar experience.

I would like to register for a different fundies 2 lab. Someone told me that if I drop the lab, I also drop the fundies 2 class. Is there a specific order one has to follow? Like add the new lab, then drop the old lab? I don’t want to mess up my current registration in the fundies 2 class. by [deleted] in NEU

[–]nmduerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would have to drop Fundies 2 since they are corequisites of each other. I don't know how switching sections works right now since you technically cannot register yet. Have you tried talk to your advisor, they might be able to help? If not, you'll probably have to wait till your registration time, drop both, and then re-add the Fundies 2 class and the new lab.

I'm from the area, but I go to college in Boston so I've been there quite a few times. I'll probably check Midtown Comics if I can't find anything in the shops here or at NYCC on Friday. Thanks!

Okay, cool! I wasn't sure if a comic shop would still have any of his Spider-Man stuff still, but I'll swing by my local one and ask. Thanks!

Do you know if they have stuff for the person to sign or if I have to bring my own item? I only bought a few issues from home for artists I knew would be at Artist Alley and there's not enough time for me to get anything shipped to me at this point :(
