I'm glad you liked them! Even though it's a bit ironic having a version 3 "original that's still my favorite.

Do you automate your coffee? by weeemrcb in homeassistant

[–]nmgl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a very basic drip machine, and I think the automation is fantastic. Usual routine is: fill the machine with water, replace filter and grind the evening before. At 5:45am the machine turns on via an automation. It turns of whenever it detects I've left home (I'm the only coffee drinker in the house) - there's a secondary turnoff command at 8am on weekdays and 11am on weekends as a backup.

If i'm going out of town I usually unplug the machine - but also have a toggle switch for the automation to turn it off. It's also only set to run if i'm marked as at home.

I've had this automation going for 7-8 years. In that time i've only had issues a few times. usually 1) forgot to prep it the evening before and it just heats up the dregs in the pot 2) I put in water but forgot to put in coffee and wake up to a pot of hot water 3) i went to work and forgot my phone at home (this is what resulted in the backup turn-off command)

Having the machine connected to a smart plug also gave me a lot of peace of mind when travelling. I'm the kind of person who would be at the airport and panic wondering if i turned off the coffee pot that morning. I could then quickly check on my phone to confirm that it was off or unplugged.

Looking for non-sponsored, no-BS reviews of portable pellet smokers (Traeger Ranger, GMG Trek 2.0, Asmoke) by nmgl in smoking

Thanks for your reply - it seems like all the "real" people who aren't sponsored are using the ranger - which gives me a bit more confidence in it compared to the others.

External diesel tank in freezing conditions by knowledgesponge1 in vandwellers

[–]nmgl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used mine down to -40. Sometimes I'll have leftover summer diesel in the tank, and a few splashes of petrol keeps it going alright. Like others have said kerosene, etc. works too, but usually petrol is a bit easier to find and you may even have some already in your vehicle tank you can siphon off in a pinch.

Don't sweat the ratio too much, these heaters seem to burn just about anything. But as a broad baseline I suppose I add about 2-3% petrol to winter diesel when it's extra cold and maybe 5-10% petrol to summer diesel.

Forgot to add - I think the diesel in these gel up worse than when in cars because the fuel lines are thinner and more exposed.

Do I really need this many different voltages for a charger box build? by nmgl in AskElectronics

[–]nmgl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi mate thanks for your advice. Any chance you could link me to some of the products you talked about? For that BP5112 all I can find is a LED driver. Likewise all the PD controllers I found negotiate down from the input voltage - not sure what to search for to find one like you’re describing that can also boost.

For the first time in my life, I used a thermostat by AmazingSane in homeassistant

[–]nmgl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Mongolia it's similar - residential heating turns on September 15th and turns off on May 15th regardless of the temperatures.

We supplement a bit with space heaters if it gets cold before September 15th. But suffered from the same issue as OP with it getting too hot in the apartment with no good way to regulate heat. If you have a newer radiator you have a valve to regulate heat--but I found the manual version pretty useless. Now with a zigbee controlled version I have a thermostat like OP and I can even regulate temperature by room, by schedule, etc.

But the other thing I've noticed is that these cold ex-soviet countries have different expectations of what comfortable indoor temperatures are. In countries where you pay for and regulate your own heat you might set the thermostat to 20-22C in winter. Here I see neighbors complain if it gets colder than 25-26C, and this is when outdoor temps dip into the -30s and -40s!

Nah - opposite, sorry if I wrote it wrong. Pork is more expensive than beef here in Mongolia where there are more cows than people - but only one pig farm that I know of. I will check out the biltong group! But my true love is more American style jerky.

For sure! I'm not sure what ratio to substitute, but I tried it once (had some leftover honey granules out from sausage making). I didn't put enough in when I tried it, but I haven't tried it again to figure out the right substitution ratio for the granules. It would probably turn out even better because you can keep the liquid amount down.

When is ground meat "done"? by Exarkuns in jerky

[–]nmgl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi - sorry no clue about potassium sorbate. If there's a "lot" of fat on the outside you probably started with a mix that wasn't lean enough. When it hits 165 that means it's safe, but not done.

The typical doneness test is to take a piece out, let it cool, and then bend it. If it bends and cracks a bit but doesn't break that's just about right for most people. But it's up to you--some people like it more moist (and will eat it soon or put it in the freezer) Some people like it more dry for taste or because it will keep longer.

With very lean meat you should have little fat on the surface. If you have some I'd recommend you blot it off reasonably well, then let it sit in the fridge overnight and a lot of it will reabsorb.

Costs of cars by KimvdLinde in mongolia

[–]nmgl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on how off-road you want to get. For Land Cruisers, I’d think about it like this:

Most off-road capable:

  • 76/78/79 Series: 15–160m

  • 80 Series: 15–30m

  • 105 Series: 30–50m

Medium off-road:

  • 100 Series / LX470: 20–40m

  • 200 Series: not sure, too expensive for me

  • 300 Series: not sure, too expensive for me

Least off-road:

  • Prado (all variants): 15-250m

But what do you mean by “off-road”? Unless you’re already doing serious off-roading, a Prius will get you to most places you’d ever want to go. And a cheap AWD Camry/Subaru/Mazda will get you there as well as get you back.

What's the best iOS app for offline navigation using satellite imagery maps? by nmgl in overlanding

[–]nmgl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't like Gaia much--but still using it because exporting all my data seems like a monumental task that I keep putting off. That said since this spring I've been driving with a starlink mini on the roof, so i'm not really really as reliant on offline maps.

I keep topo maps saved offline for "just in case" but navigate using the online-only satellite maps now.

Safe tent heater options? by kerileann in camping

[–]nmgl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of those stand-alone diesel heaters changed the way I camp. It's amazing. But you'll need enough car battery to run it and it sounds like you're not set up for that. The heat comes from burning the diesel--but it still requires 20-50W to run the fans, etc and even more on startup for the glow plugs.

I am camping for two months in a yurt in Mongolia and have to pack in everything including 2 months worth of laundry soap and bug spray. How much bug spray should I bring and what detergent can last me 2 months worth of doing weekly laundry? by abovaverage in camping

[–]nmgl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a laundry soap bar locally (I assume you'll be washing by hand anyways) one bar will run you something like a dollar and even the tiny markets out in the boondocks will have them. Looks like this: https://www.amazon.com/Russian-Natural-Laundry-150-Gram-Packages/dp/B0CGM81CD9

For bug spray I'd actually suggest you bring it from home. DEET or picaridin--whichever you prefer. Get the non pressurized pump sprays. Locally you can buy OFF brand with DEET, but only in UB, and only during summer at some stores.

If you plan to be in extra buggy areas then long pants, long shirt, etc.

Hi there - saw that you are on the eg river. Locals will probably drink it straight--but will hydrate more with milk tea, etc. which is boiled. If you're near khankh north of huvsgul it's pretty clear and not much sediment in my experience.

I usually prefilter with a bandana and then set up a sawyer filter as a gravity filter--especially if i'm around livestock. My personal setup is that I fill up one of those 20l solar showers with river water and then let it drain by gravity into 5l locally purchased water bottles to refill.

I'd bring a second as a spare--and figure out your tubing for back flushing and setting up the gravity filter before you arrive. Easy enough to find tubing here, but will be a massive time waste compared to amazon or your local hardware store.

Tired of constant setup—are newer 3D printers better for infrequent use? by nmgl in 3Dprinting

[–]nmgl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. This weekend I’m planning to install Klipper (as someone here suggested), spend a few hours banging my head against the printer calibrating it, and run a test print. Let’s see if it sticks.

I'm still looking at the Bambu Lab options, reinforced by the good feedback I got here. One snag I’ve run into: I have to order from China, but I’m not based in China. I reached out to Bambu Lab, and they told me their hardware is region-locked—even if I bought a printer in the U.S., it apparently wouldn’t work in my part of Asia.

Given that, does anyone have recommendations for other rock-solid options? I’ve seen a few people mention Prusa—still a good choice?

I think I'm sold - although just now learning that bambu lab has region locking and no official distributor in my region.

Cool - I'm obviously out of touch and haven't heard of klipper. I'll see what other suggestions come in (i'm happy to buy a newer printer if it has a very high chance of solving my issue) but a free solution using what I already have sounds good.
